I was just thinking about how, for most characters, there seem to be seasons in which they clearly shine the most, have the most important development, do/say/think/feel the most interesting things, etc. Was just wondering which season or seasons you associate with the "best of" each character, and why? Too tired to explain each of mine now, but I'm happy to back 'em up!

For me:

Buffy- 3, 5

Willow- 3

Xander- 4

Giles- 3, 4

Anya- 7

Spike- 5

Dawn- 6

Tara- 6

Angel- 3 (BTVS), 3 (Ats)

Cordelia- 3(Btvs), 3(Ats)

Wesley- 5 (Ats)

Gunn- 4

Riley- 4 (shocker)

Faith- 7 (Btvs) 4 (Ats) (also very surprising)

Joyce- 3

Riley? Very risky! But I think your right!! ;D
Either! Like, you could say "I think x's character developed the most in this season, but I enjoyed watching him/her the most in this season, etc."
Anyway, it's whatever it means to you!

I liked Buffy herself the most in Season 3. It was the first season I had really seen her "single" so to speak and even though Angel was around, she just seemed more independent that season. I also love her in Season 5.

Willow would be Season 2. I really loved how her character became more confident that season and*handled Angelus, Jenny's death, Xander/Cordy, reensouling Angel and dating Oz. I also love her in Season 4 &5 cuz of Tara.

Xander would be Season 7. I've always loved Xander but I feel like he really helped to fill the void left by Giles and I loved how supportive he was of Buffy, Dawn, and Willow even though he had had arguably the least support growing up of all.

Spike is hard but I liked him best in Season 6 and 5. I felt like he really understood what Buffy was going through better than anybody else and despite being evil tried to be there for her most of the time.

Giles I like best all the time but if I had to choose a Season it would be 3. He was still recovering from the tragic loss of Jenny but he hardly ever thought of himself and constantly worked to keep the kids safe. I also loved how he handled Angel being back and the Faith situation.

I enjoyed Angel in Season 2 & 3 but I really grew to like him in Season 1 of his own show. He became a lot more human and I felt like I knew what was going on in his head better and could relate to him a lot more.

Cordelia best season for me is 2. She became really likable in that Season and I feel she was underused in Season 3. Season 2 Angel is my favorite Cordy season of all.

I'll do the smaller characters later.

Good idea!

Angel: Season 3, we see him really change when he's with baby Connor, he has pure love for him which was great to watch

Cordelia: Probably season 3 also, I feel they were really pushing their Cangel romance and Cordelia began to really take the next step with all the training, becoming half-demon and other things she was doing

Gunn: Season 4, mainly because of "Supersymmetry" which was definitely a big moment for him, and when Angel leaves and Wesley gets alienated it was cool to see him step up

Wesley: All of them. But if I had to pick, maybe season 3 because he starts to turn badass

Fred: Season 5, it was fun to see the relationship between her and Wesley get built up so much...and when she died, man, that was a painful scene to watch

Lorne: Season 5, Lorne was epic in every season he was in, but his final scene in Season 5 was also powerful stuff

Faith: Angel season 4, I always felt Faith was better on AtS, and seeing the roles get subverted was fun (Faith helping Angel)

Spike: Again, Angel season 5, I felt they lost the character in season 7 of Buffy, and it was just fun to see him get back to his Season 2 self

Oh you sig is gorgeous!
Buffy - Season 1. She is at her most likeable and unlike other seasons there is no enabling or hiding of murderers.

Willow - Season 2. Gets a boyfriend, learns magic on her own, occasionally yells at Xander, Cordy, Giles and Angel, despite the love triangle she is great friends with Xander and Buffy, and not just on paper as in some other seasons.

Xander - Season 2. Easy as a really easy pie. He challenges Buffy (When She Was Bad, Becoming, etc), saves the day on a number of occasions, has a tremendously fun relationship with Cordelia and unlike most other seasons he is never relegated to the background.

Giles - Season 2 (I think a pattern is emerging here). This season has like two-thirds of all development Giles got. And it has some of his most heartbreaking moments (Passion, I Only Have Eyes For You) along with the heroic ones (Becoming) and badass ones (Ted, Becoming, Halloween).

Spike - Season 1. Off-screen is the right place for him.

Cordelia - BtVS S2.

Tara - a tie between S4 and S5 but since she proposes getting a cat in S4 and I love cats, S4 wins. 🙂

Buffy: 3
Xander: 2
Willow: 4
Giles: 3
Spike: 5
Riley: 4
Dawn: 5
Tara: 6
Anya: 4
Oz: 3

Now for Angel characters

Angel: 2
Cordelia: 1
Wesley: 4
Fred: 5
Gunn: 5
Lorne: 3
Connor: 5
Harmony: 5

Buffy: Season 2
Xander: Season 6
Willow: Season 2 and 3
Giles: Season
Angel: Season 2
Spike: Season 2 and 4
Cordelia: Season 2
Dawn: Season 5
Anya: Season 4

S2 Buffy because it's the best compromise between painful angst and charming pep. I ache for her loss and love her as she really starts accepting her Slayerness automatically and she treasures Giles/Willow/Xander/Angel with even deeper connections than S1.

Very close between S2 Xander and S4 Xander. I love S2 Xander's passion, his relationship with Cordelia and his moments of bravery. However, I find S4 Xander just so appealing as he tries to figure out how to fix his life and I sympathize with him so much as his friends grow away from him.

Not even close. S2 Giles for sure. See Icarium's comment:

Giles - Season 2 (I think a pattern is emerging here). This season has like two-thirds of all development Giles got. And it has some of his most heartbreaking moments (Passion, I Only Have Eyes For You) along with the heroic ones (Becoming) and badass ones (Ted, Becoming, Halloween).

I can't decide between S2 Willow and S3 Willow. There's too much good in both seasons and more, the two seasons feel like such a logical continuation in the development of her magic skills, relationship with Oz, partnership/friendship with Buffy and Giles, confidence level and life goals. The only slip up is the declined Xander/Willow friendship from S2 to S3 but there's enough scenes where Willow indicates her deep feelings for Xander for me to think that the decline in the relationship is better written on her end. Plus, Vamp Willow, Doppelgangland and Choices are three reasons why S3 deserves some top ranking even if it has to share with S2.

S2 Spike. Vibrant, scary, funny. The best villain after Angelus and Faith and Spike/Drusilla is my favorite Fanged Four relationship.

AtS S1 Cordelia. I love her in BtVS S2 and those two seasons are the only seasons where I LOVED Cordelia (although I also have affection for her in AtS S2, the end of BtVS S1 and BtvS S3).

However, her S2 BtVS growth is a little too closely tied to her romance with Xander and it doesn't give Cordelia an adult life experience AND the ability to make her own living (and indirectly provide for Wesley and Doyle) AND the ability to truly shape lives (Wesley, Angel, Doyle).

S3 Oz. The more Oz, the better. Unless he's sleeping with Veruca, you know that he's going to be witty, charming, romantic and all-around adorable so let's just pick the season with the most of him!

S5 Tara. I'm not a fan of hers but not giving up Dawn to Glory was quality heroism and the thumb wresting/Dawn bonding moments were cute.

S5 Anya. Not a fan of hers either but trying to sacrifice herself to Olaf and shielding Xander from the falling bricks were instances of quality heroism and organizing a brainstorming session in the group was quality leadership/intelligence.

S4 Riley. One season has Riley paying vampires for sex...oooh I mean suck jobs, pouting about stuff like Buffy rolling over in her sleep and risking death because he doesn't think Buffy wants someone without superpowers. The other season has Riley as important to main Big Bad plot, as a TA, with very cute scenes with Willow and courting Buffy with sweetness and formality. Which one do you I think I'll pick?

S5 Dawn. Not a Dawnster fan but in this season, she's critically important to the arc and to Buffy. Can't say that about her in the later seasons. Some of that's Buffy's fault but as a character, Dawn needs a purpose other than being a mouth for Buffy to feed and mouth to yell "Get out. Get out! GET OUT!"

Buffy- S3
Willow- S5 Even though I prefer nerdy Willow to badass Willow.
Xander-S2 I liked him with Cordelia.
Giles- S2 After the high school years they all but forgot about his development.
Dawn- S5
Anya-S5
Tara- S5
Spike- Can I pick all of them? 😛 Umm S6/7 for me

I loved Buffy all the way through - I really did! But if I had to pick I think she was at her best late S2, all of Season 3 and the whole of Season 5! I preferred Willow in Season 2 and 4 ( special mention to vamp willow in S3 though) whilst I preferred Xander in seasons 1-2. Giles definitely S1-3 but also loved it when he opened the magic shop in S5.

🙂

Nice question I think yo can create such a survey. But I still think every character has a special episode in every season! So it's very difficult for me to decide! Buffy was very strong in season 2 becasue of Angel and in season 5 because of her sister who was really in life-danger. Don't know where she was stronger. So I can't give you an answer!
