I'm confused about this line (from "Reptile Boy"). The way I see it, there are at least two possible interpretations:

1. Buffy's insulting Angel: "Kissing you makes me feel so gross I wish I was dead"; or
2. She's being overly dramatic: "Kissing you is so wonderful that life might as well end now because it will never be this good again."

I'm not saying that she ACTUALLY feels either way, but that's what she may be SAYING.

I can see it going either way.

What do you all think?

I think she's just being a melodramatic teenager.

Alternately, since he's dead, it could mean she wants to be like/with him forever.

I agree... I always took it to mean that she wanted to become a vampire so she could be with him forever.
I go back and forth on that line alot. Sometimes I think she is being a dramaqueen and saying that his kiss is so unbelievable she wants to die because nothing can ever compare. Then other times I think she wants to die to be like him, so they can have their vamp fairytale and then sometimes I think she wants to piss him off. So basically I don't know!

I know I know...I'm a font of nothing!

karma for the Xander quote.
That's okay, Keanoite. I don't think any of us know. I'm gonna go with VisionGuy and say it's one of the rare crappy lines in the Buffyverse. It's sort of like a soap opera line. You just want to pull a Malcolm Reynolds and yell, "What does that even MEAN?!"

I know, it is a very rare thing for them to have such a stinker!

One of my favorite stinkers is, "Our love is like FIRE, Emily!" It's from GH, of course. My best friend and I quote that back at each other whenever we hear an incredibly cheesy line. Other favorites (coincidentally, all from the same character) are, "I hope you enjoyed yourself... because you're dead to me, now," "He's dead inside," and "I love my wife -- inside (dramatic hand gestures) -- even more than she loves me!" Some of these, you just had to see, but they crack me up.

Buffy's line fits right in with those.

I think it just summed up the romantic Romeo and Juliet-esque drama that was Buffy and Angel's relationship. I did always see it though as she meant when she kissed him she loved him so much that she'd be willing to be turned just to be with him. Dangerous stuff. Romantic and potentially over dramatic (I say potentially because I'm such an ole romantic that I, shamefully, love anything like this), but dangerous and deadly too....

I hadn't thought about that angle ("I want to be with you forever, please make me a vampire, too"), though it seems out of place for that particular conversation. She was grouchy with him for "not taking her seriously" and "treating her like a child" (hence her actions later in the episode), so would she really make such a loaded, commitment-filled statement? Hmmm.

I didn't take it that way in the episode. In the episode, I thought she was just being a melodramatic teenager. When I saw that line slightly out of context (in this thread instead of in the episode), though, I picked up on that possible layer of meaning.

Although I do think she was naive as to what a relationship with Angel really would entail, I also think that she knew that they weren't going to be Zack and Kelly and live happily ever after, didn't stop her wanting it though. I think she said it to mean she loved so much that she wants to die form the passion of kissing him and didn't realise really what she was saying, or maybe she did. The look on her face, she seemed to know exactly what she meant...now if she could just fill the rest of us in, that'd be great!

I read once that Sarah and David had a "gross out" contest before their first on screen kiss. They ate and drank all sorts of things to make their brath absolutely foul. Maybe that's what she was really referring to

karma for the totally nonchalant Saved by the Bell reference, love it!

Or maybe she was just commenting on Angel's kissing skills?

Hahaha. I can't see Angel being a bad kisser, but that sure would be funny.

Yeah, Joss mentioned that in the commentary on that episode. (Yes, I am a loser with nothing better to do with my time [besides schoolwork] than watch Buffy commentary.) It made me appreciate even more a) how much fun they must have had on set; and b) what good actors the two of them are.

The way she says it, I presume it's a time when she's not likin' him, though I haven't seen this episode in a long while, so I can't quite remember.

Hey! Joss's commentaries are hilarious!! did you see the one for Innocence? It's laugh out loud funny, especially the thing about Tony Head and his pants:L

This is one of my favourite bangel lines, and it took me years to understand it. My interpretation is that when she's with Angel she knows they can't really be together, so a part of her wishes she was dead (a vampire as well). The theory about that has been floating around for a while, as other people have mentioned.
It's beautiful and sad... pretty much their relationship all tied up in that statement because it's ultimately doomed (..until he becomes human!! I hope 😉).
Trying to make some art from that moment, but it's just looking crap so far.

*sigh* Human Angel....good theory
i thought she meant it like "i want to die because i know how wrong this all is and that would be the only way to end my love for you"

Wow, I thought I was the only one who didn't really get that line.

I didn't really think that much into it, I just sort of took it as being dramatic, saying it because she thought it would hurt his feelings.
Plus, if you don't try to enterpret it too much, it sounds pretty cool and poetic. I guess maybe the writers just thought of it and then said 'Okay, we'll go with that.'

your banner is one of my all-time favorite visions of buffy :) i also like their talk at the end of inca mummy girl. and in "seeing red" i guess i'm just a bander fan :)
Perhaps she meant his breath. That undead, 250 year-old halitosis has got to be pretty effin' noxious. I'm surprised she DIDN'T die.

My apologies. 😛 In a silly mood today. Please carry on with the regularly scheduled thread already in progress.......

That would jive with the discussion in another thread that Angel couldn't give her CPR because vampire air is diseased and nasty. . . .
:thought:
