When You Kiss Me, I Want to Die

I think I get it...but the more I read into it the less I get it.

Being all slayer-y and everything, at 16 she's got this simplistic knowledge that kissing vampires and enjoying it is kinda wrong and goes against her nature. So it's bad. But she can't stop and being an overly dramatic person, she wishes she didn't have to deal with the situation and that leads to saying that she wants to die when he kisses her.

So then she gets older, realises it's more complex and stops being to dramatic about such things.

I don't know.....lol

karma for effort!
If memory serves, there was another line quite similar to this about the time Angel was leaving Sunnydale "For Buffy's own good" where somebody asks her how she's holding up, and she wails, "I'm just trying to keep from dying!" Really. now, remember Spike's statement about Slayers and their death wishes?

That made more sense, though. That was right after the love of her life had just broken up with her and announced his intention to leave. That's devastating. Something similar happened to me once, and I was just trying to keep from dying. I went nearly catatonic for a few hours (I think; I can't really remember), and then went through a state where I was completely numb and uncaring. I didn't eat anything for a couple of days, then HARDLY anything for months. Lost 40 pounds in about 2 months and kept losing (ultimately went from a size 14 to a 2). So I completely understand what she meant when she said "I'm just trying to keep from dying" and "I feel like I can't breathe."

I'm with Blondie...that line makes perfect sense. Angel leaving was in some ways worse than when he died because he was CHOOSING to go. That is absolutely heartbreaking when the person you see as your future tells you your not theirs.

Maybe it's different for men and women. I've lost somebody like that and I missed them sure, but I didn't feel like I was going to die. Life goes on, loves come and go.

The When you kiss me, I want to die quote has never made sense to me. Its not something I've tried to work out. If I've not understood it after watching the episode 10 times I try to let it go lol I really can't get my head around it. I never thought Buffy was referring to Angel turning her and them living happily ever after. But other than that I can't make out why she said it.

With regards to I'm just trying to keep from dying quote, I like that one. I think its perfectly understandable. A teenage girl breaking up with her first love for the first time must feel like the end of the world.

Oh, and with regards to Bangel kisses, I don't think you can beat Angel season 1 IWRY!!

I'm not sure if it's different for men and women or just different for different people...I know fella's who have been absolutely heartbroken after break-ups and felt like they couldn't go on.

As for the turning her part, I think that is part of what it is supposed to mean. But, more of a....(brace yourself for a long sentence)
"Kissing you makes me wish this wasn't I'm the Slayer/You're the Vampire relationship...and if I died (either undead and even dead dead) the internal conflict would be over and I could be happy."

Tis truelly how I saw it also, but said in a much more melodramatic way by the Buff.

Now if she said that, I would have been happy. LOL

It definitely would have cleared things up, but if I had to put a meaning on it I would go with the fact that she's sick of things being so complicated. She just wants this to fix itself, for the awkwardness to be over and them to either be a couple or not.

I think that this was a time where Buffy was being dramatic. Angel was telling her what she wanted and what she shouldn't do. She was getting tired to everybody telling her what she wants and what she should do.

I think when she used the term "When you kiss me I want to die" it most likely means that she would not care what happened in that moment, i.e. her dead is not so big a deal.

I think what Buffy meant about this was that when she kisses Angel, she forgets about all practality, and is willing to give herself fully to him (symbolically). After all, she didn't hesitate to let him frink from her to save his life after Faith shot him with a poisioned arrow (season 3). I don't think that she means that she litterly wants to die (like, become a vampire) but that she just knows how doomed their relationship is from the start. She'd rather "die" then lvei without him. Get it?

Being a teenage girl around the same age as Buffy's character, and going through some of the same emotions she experienced on the show, I can definitely understand why the writers may have had her say those things, but I also agree that sometimes I had to roll my eyes and go "Ok, overdramatic?" I guess it just depends on my mood when I rewatch those eps now... At the time, being a 16-year-old girl, I didn't think those lines were silly at all, but now being 26 and knowing what I know now, I kind of laugh them off.

I like the line, sure, it's melodramatic, but that's the fun of it. I'm melodramatic (in a funny way), the next time a dog licks my face I'm going to say it.."When you kiss me, I want to die." Bloody dogs.

"When you kiss me, I want to die."

"I;m just trying to keep from dying."

"I can't love you...and it's killing me."

This thread has been around for almost an entire year, ani I STILL think that all three statements were made by a melodramatic, immature girl with a death fixation. Satsu might just be the best thing that ever happened to her. (Though I have my personal doubts)

But, she's a slayer, doesn't that explain her death fixation?

But yeah, very melodramatic, and funny statements.

(There's medication that'll help you with that, darlin'. You really oughta try some, what with your new responsibilities an' all...) Oh, and vultures don't stalk, they soar.

Okay, now, let's try a little public poll:

How many of you kind and gentle readers think Buffy and Angel ever in the three seasons before Ol' Broody left the show shared any single kiss that was the equal of that smacker at the end of "Once More With Feeling"? Consider carefully, now, there may be a prize comin' outa this...

I can think of one I will remember you the kitchen scene that was pretty hot.

I know, I know I'm shameful as a Spuffy Shipper.

Getting back on track and i should really read threads all the way through before replying.

When i first heard that line i was like "WHAT? WHAT IN HELL DID SHE MEAN BY THAT?" After much consideration i came to the conclusion that she meant when he kisses her she wants to be turned in to a vampire just so she could be with him.
