When You Kiss Me, I Want to Die

To me it means this: Buffy wants Angel so bad and when they kiss she knows that this relationship cannot work in the end and it kills her. She wants it to work so bad, but everything about it tells her it can't, and that hurts her heart.

Yeah, I agree with that.
It must have been a like a knife in her heart, cuz she loved him so much and because of the fact she knew, that it won't work forever, just in time, the pain was that big, that she wanted to die to stand the pain.
But it's the same, when Angel turned into Angelus and he got mean to her and hurted her like in "Innocence", what I re-watched yesterday.
 
What I love about this line (typical brilliant Joss) is that it can be interpreted in so many ways, and probably does mean all of the above! 🙂
 
I think it's supposed to be tragical like. Their love story is a tragical love story, and they both know it. Because no matter how much they will try, it's doomed (remember how Romeo and Juliet ended?). I find it kinda beautiful in a weird way, it's fairytale.
 
I've always had doubts about this quote but I don't think she said that to hurt Angel. She's in love with him, they're not supposed to be together, they'll never have a future but the he kisses her and it's like all these things mesh together and she feels in heaven and hell at the same time. Heaven because she loves him with all her heart, hell because it can't be real...I guess she used the word "die" to symbolize the hurt, the confusion and the uncertainty. Anyway...I've just watched Reptile Boy with David Greenwalt commentary and he's the one who pitched this line to Joss, he liked it and they put in the script but no deeper explanation was given.
 
Well, and it's also just a clever play on words. Before she says it, Angel says, "When I kiss you, you don't wake up from a deep sleep and live happily ever after." It's about the impossibility of their relationship, even both of them are powerfully drawn to each other.

And for some reason whenever I think of this scene, I also think of Riley's comment in Buffy's dream in Hush: "If I kiss you, it'll make the sun go down."

I've always had mixed feelings about this quote. It's a great quote that's true, but I'm never sure if it was meant in a good way or bad. I like to think that it was meant in a good way but taking into account the situation and the way it was said I think it could have been meant as bad.
 
I've always viewed the line as a cheesy, melodramatic quote from a lovesick teenager who has lost perspective.

Buffy, as someone who deals with the realities of life and death nightly, states that her romantic feelings for an older man fills her with the desire to perish. Hardly a rational conclusion. I think it is representative of, and foreshadowing of (intentionally or not), Buffy's inability to deal with Angel on a mature level.
 
I always took it as she loves to kiss him but knows how wrong it is to be kissing a vampire and yet still want it so bad ... Having something you wanted so bad and knowing you shouldn't/can't have it is overwhelming, especially when it comes to a person. So I take it as literal.

It's also a tactic, too. I'll push you away by being honest so I don't have to keep seeing you and feel like this. But:

Angel: I love you. I try not to but I can't stop.
Buffy: Me too, I can't either.
*sexytime*

Eventually she gives in because she wasn't able to die before her heart took over her head. Oh, lovers.
 
Let me just say that I have not read any of the previous posts before typing up my answer. I rarely do.

I suppose there could be a number of different meanings in that line. You're right, it is hardcore and they way in which Sarah Michelle Gellar portrays it is very, very serious. Almost in an Edward/Bella kind of way but less whiny, which is nice. It's just very...passionate I think. I don't know.

The line could be taken in a negative or a positive way. As I said before, she says it with so much passion but passion can be negative and positive right?

If you want to take it in a positive way, she's tell him her innermost thoughts. How she feels when she kisses him. Saying that you want to die could be a positive thing in some ways because it's saying she feels that strongly for him. However, writing this now I decide that it's very unlikely that the line was said for positive reasons. It was more likely said for reasons to hurt him.

So, negative. The line was most likely said out of spite towards him. Aiming to hurt him in a way that just saying any old thing couldn't achieve. I think maybe, though, there could also be a hint of shame. Again, she is telling him her innermost thoughts in order to hurt him just a little but she's also saying that she can't really believe that she is betraying her duties as a Slayer by falling in love with a Vampire.

I'm not sure, just my thoughts.
 
I've always thought she meant she wanted to die to be with him. Y'know, all vampire like. Maybe it's just me thinking that...

Or maybe she just said it to hurt him because he wasn't being nice. But she wasn't either in that episode...
 
What did she really mean?

So in Season 2 Episode 5 "Reptile Boy", the scene with Buffy and Angel has always puzzled me a little bit.

Angel: This isn't some fairytale. When I kiss you, you don't wake up from a deep sleep and live happily ever after.
Buffy: No...when you kiss me I want to die.

I guess I never really understood what she meant by "I want to die". Forgive me for going Twilight here but, I keep wondering if she meant become a vampire to be with him forever kind of thing...or just plain die because she loves him so much it hurts or whatever...or even a completely different meaning I haven't thought of yet?

Now that I'm writing this out I think it's making more sense for the plain dying but.........

What are your thoughts?
 
Maybe she was remembering their first kiss. Sarah and David got into a gross out contest to see which one could get the foulest breath just before the kiss. Having to kiss anyone who had just gargled with the oil from a sardine can, and actually pretend to enjoy it, would make just about anyone choose death as an alternative to a repeat performance.

I think this is it exactly, which is why it is the perfect foreshadowing to what's about to happen in the story.
