Giles doesn't work as a librarian or a watcher, so he doesn't get money. Where is his money coming from? Did he just save incredibly well?

i think he may have saved up a bit from his Watcher days. there wasn't really much he needed to buy in Sunnydale...rent, gas, food etc. i can't imagine him needing loads.
and maybe he has some rich reletive who left him all their money when they died...?

Well He was paid as a watcher and a Liberian from series 1-3, so I would guess he had some saveings. Then he was a gentleman of leisure in season 4, and I think maybe Money was a reason he was going to leave at the start of season 5? But then he got the magic box, and then although it is not really mentioned in Checkpoint he is reinstated as a watcher and recieves all the money he would have gotten since the time he was fired and that ep?

And I'd assume being a watching pays well, The council did have a good bit of money and to be a watcher you have to basically give up your life, and maybe he gets paid more for being a watcher with an active slayer?

Giles never seemed to have a problem with money. Maybe his family always had it? No one knows much about his life before Watcher except the whole Eyhgone thing. Maybe his family was rich and he had a trust fund thing. After all he went to Oxford (I think) after school

And then in season 6 he gave Buffy a huge chunk of money to help her out. True he had the shop then but if he wasnt already pretty well off, chances are he'd not have been able to afford it. Plus, look at his house at the beginning of Season 7. Huge!!!

yeah, i agree with Wicked...maybe he did come from money, and that's where he gets it. his house is REALLY huge...which is actually ASH's real house!! whoa!

He is reinstated as a Watcher in season five, and it paid retroactively. That's got to be a large sum of money! And then, he obviously has to make money off of the Magic Box.

Yeah but he did nothing for a year before that and still obviously had no money problems. Also, the house (especially in England) would cost way more than just savings from that!

Well the year he was out of work was clearly through his own choice (he never seemed worried about not working or paying the bills) so it's safe to assume that he had money saved to cover himself during that time.

In fact, the fact that he was able to start up the Magic Box so quickly would suggest that he was never really short of money. He seemed more bored than needy when he came up with the idea of reopening the shop himself. Then add that to the retroactive pay he got when he was reinstated as a Watcher and any money he made from the shop as well. I'd say that finances were never an issue for Giles.

well i'd have to say that he saved his money well, plus the fact that i reckon being a watcher paid pretty damn well, and he was also a librarian at the same time so yea he was pretty well off.also he didnt go on any vacations or spending sprees or anything so he didnt waste his money.
then in season 5 he was reinstated as a watcher and they re-embursed him all the money he would have got if he had stayed being a watcher, so even if his money was practically all gone it doesnt matter as he got a load of money back.

What doesnt seem fair to me is the fact that Watchers get paid but Slayers dont. Just because they were born a Slayer doesnt mean they have to do it. Plus, theyre giving up their entire life, and the chance at a real job that pays well, to go out and save the world. Youd think if the Watchers get paid to train them, theyd get paid to do the killing!

That's a very good point. I never thought of that.

Watchers in charge of slayers probably get paid a little more to cover the Slayer's life (as they were supposed to be isolated and all).

Even demons need some man loving, and Giles knows how to push their buttons.

He's like one of the high class street women, the ones who are clean, own bars of soap and charge £10,000 a go.

I always thought he was well off too...holding down two jobs...taking a year off and reopening the Magic Shop. He wouldn't have given Buffy the money if he couldn't afford it.
