Where had dawn been all that time?

Hey guys,

so i was watching season 5 of buffy today and watched the ep buffy vs dracula where at the end dawn makes her first appearance, and i was thinking something that has always bothered me but i just always push it to the back of my mind.

When buffy first see's dawn she is un-packing her stuff and buffy she says "what are you doing here?" like she must have been away somewhere, but where?
when the monks made her and put all the fake memories in everyone's mind, where was she supposed to have been all this time? I've always assumed she must have been staying with there dad.

what do you guys think?
 
My assumption was always that memories of Dawn would be of her spending the summer withher Dad like at the start of every other season where Buffy goes away to LA, Cleveland or wherever. As far as for the whole time since the series started, the Scoobies probably all remember her being right there along side them or at home with Joyce while they were out saving the world.
 
I agree with [MENTION=11853]Jodast[/MENTION] I think she was with her Dad on hoildays like Buffy was and they all had memories of Dawn already being here.
 
I always assumed that as well, that Dawn was supposed to be coming back from her Dad's. I figure Buffy was much older now and didn't care anymore to spend time with her Dad, but Dawn was still young and probably enjoyed being with her Dad more.
 
I had to watch the DVD of that episode again, to remind myself.
During the start of the episode Buffy had gone home to have a meal with her mom. Joyce said about the house being to quiet without Buffy. Was there any mention of Dawn coming home from her dads the next day? No.
In a subsequent episode we see the Monks of Dagon performing a ritual to make the ball of energy human, the slayers sister Dawn, so did she exist before her first appearance?
Was she in any photo's in Buffy's house?
If Buffy had a sister at that point, I dare say it would have been in the script.

Indeed, until we see her and she is created as the Key, I don't think she exists at all in the mnids of Buffy, Joyce or anyone else. Their memories are retconned to remember Dawn as being there even though in reality, she wasn't.
