Ok, first of all I apologise if I've missed something from the series regarding this, but where was Glory before the beginning of season 5? Was there something about her not being able to take control of Ben's body until he turned 20? If so, was Ben only 20 when this series started thus this was the first time Glory could take control (which I highly doubt because he would have been through medical school when we meet him) so, say that would put him in his mid 20s, where was Glory before this series? Surely as a powerful hell-god she would have wreaked some havoc somewhere?
This is just something I have always thought about, and if anyone has any ideas or information that would be great 🙂 again, apologies if I'm being obtuse about this.

I think (and I don't have the discs in front of me to double-check) that I remember them or her saying something about having worked to gather enough power or get strong enough to finally take over Ben's body and manifest herself. It sounds like that's what she'd spent the last 20-some-odd years doing.

Taken from BuffyWikia:
Glory is a goddess from a hell dimension, over which she ruled alongside two other deities. The three of them originally ruled with equal power, but Glory's strength grew beyond even what the other two could conceive, as did her lust for pain and misery, and she quickly became the most powerful and frightening of the three deities of the dimension. Afraid and fearful that Glory would seize their dimension for herself, the other two deities struck first and a great war began. Glory lost the war, though narrowly, and was banished into the earthly dimension, where she was forced to share a body with a human child named Ben, who was created solely to "contain" her.

Unexpectedly, Glory was too powerful to be completely contained within a human vessel, and although not until Ben reached 20, she begin to gain control over Ben for short periods of time, taking the form of a beautiful, but vain and self-centered human female who possessed superhuman strength, speed, and near-invulnerability.

I kind of feel bad for her getting kicked out of hell because she was too good at being hellish

I seem to remember something like that, too, now that you mention it. Although it's a pretty vague explanation for where she was. I like to think she was sitting in her hell dimension waiting til she was able to take control of Ben's body to come find her Key.

She turned up right around the time Dawn turned up, which makes me think that, although no one knew what the Key was, or what it looked like, that some how Glory was able to sense it's power. She was pretty certain it was in Sunnydale, when, theoretically, it could have been anywhere.

I think the others are right about her needing to gather power before she could take over Ben for extended periods of time, then she had to gather her minions, hunt down info on the Key, AND, if she was following the power of the Key, she had to convince Ben to move to Sunnydale. All that takes time, lol.

She turned up when Dawn turned up because she had been trying to track down the key, and had almost caught up with it, forcing the monks to hastily (and with a great deal of finesse) rearrange reality so that the key was sent to Buffy, just as her Gorgeousness was breaking down the door in the monastery.

In the hospital in Sunnydale, Glory tells Dawn that in the small glimpse she got of the key it looked green and glowing (or words to that effect)

EDIT Oh, and before that she was shopping.

The key wasn't in Sunnydale until the 5th season, so why would Glory be there? We see that she almost got the key before that. She was probably off trying to find the right monks that had the key.

She was banned from her hell dimension, so it's possible she was there before the key was. She needed the key to get back home. It also makes sense that she was first banned, then the key was stolen from her so she couldn't return home, then the monks turned it into Dawn, and then she got to Sunnydale looking for it. There could be many versions of the order of the things that happened there.

Erm, I remember that Ben had a talk with one of Glory's footmen. He said that he is tired of cleaning up Glory's mess all the time, because he does this all his life. Also, when Glory appears in Sunnydale, and the rate of mental illness increases rapidly, Ben calls that demon, that falls from the sky. The Scoobies then learn about similar incidents from the past (from other parts of the world) as they search for the demon. So I think that Glory already (long before S5) had the power to take over Ben's body and search for the key.

I was just about to agree with everyone else until your post reminded me of that. It does seem that Glory has been able to take over Ben for quite a few years. Maybe she didn't physically manifest until he was in his teens. I find it creepy to think of Glory merging out of a baby or a small child. I do think however that before Glory came to Sunnydale she was probably searching the globe for the Key. The fact that she had only seen it once makes me think she was close before, but not close enough whilst still on earth.

Ok, this has just made my favourite season make more sense to me 🙂 thank you BB members 🙂 I was a bit fuzzy on the glory-ben stuff 🙂
