Where is Sunnydale?

Don't know if this has been done before but Mrs Pointy and I were talking about it tonight whilst watching the rerun of "Home" on Sky.

Where do you think Sunnydale actually is meant to be? We thought that somewhere round about Santa Barbara was a possibility. Chris had got the impression that it was only a couple of hours from LA and it has to be near the coast - we've seen beach parties 🙂 I thought that it might be around Cambria or is that a bit too far north? What do you Californians reckon?

Does anyone know if it is based on a real town or is it just a figment of Joss's imagination?
 
It's made up, but there is a Sunnyvale California. I like to think that Sunnydale is a typo, and it's really Sunnyvale. 😛
 
Yeah, some of it looks a lot like Santa Barbara (3 or 4 hours from L.A). When the show Giles house by the hill it looks like San Bernadino (2 hours from L.A), and the final scene in chosen when they are on that road looks like the 1-10 which we take to Arizona, but it goes through San Bernadino, I think. San Bernadino is more inland though. I think they just have different filming locations. But it'd be awesome if they had a set location. But I've been to UCLA and that's where they filmed some collage scenes and they filmed the campus/park-ish area in hush at universal studios.
But my life goal is like to find out where exactly Sunnydale is supposed to be...lol. But they dont exactly look like they live that close to the coast. When they zoom out in chosen it looks like a pretty inland deserty place.
I've never heard of Cambira before, it's probably up north more, and I think Sunnydale is supposed to be in Southern California.

Chris has just pointed out that Sunnydale must be set on the coast (or at least on a large river/lake) because of the large dock area (as well as the beach parties🙂). However, it seems to be like Springfield in the Simpsons - the landscape changes to suit the story 😉

The shots at the end of "Chosen" show a deserty location but at other times people have been seen driving into Sunnydale (Caleb, Willow/Faith) down what look to me to be leafy, country roads (possibly even a forest?) - although we have seen roads in and around LA like that. We haven't really been to enough places in Southern California though.

It's definitely north of LA though, isn't it?

Let's pin this geography down, guys! 🙂

BTW - Cambria is a town in California's Central Coast area so probably too far north to be Sunnydale. It was close to the epicentre of the recent earthquake and is near San Simeon. It is apparently home to quite a large arty community, but don't let that put anyone off 😉 We liked it...
 
Yea its probably supposed to be somewhere around Santa Barbara...that would be my guess anyway. Santa Barbara is just a few hrs away and its got numerous spots(the beach etc.) that we've seen on Buffy
