Anyone here that plays guitar? How long have you been playing and what got you into it?

I got into it because it soothed my daughter who is a feral demon lol and because I want to play my fave songs

I started learning about a month ago. I can't do too much, but I'm enjoying it! I just learned some simple up down strumming this week. I'm self taught, but thinking of getting lessons.

I can play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Happy Birthday, and I'm working on A Horse With No Name
 
I'm self taught too, just watched some youtube vids when I was trying to fill my days. I can play scales and some chords on acoustic guitar, but I find it uncomfortable to play. I dont know how to position myself without ending up sore or with a headache. I could play along with a few pop songs but I am a very bad singer so I prefer to play my keyboard because I can play melody easy on that! I havent really learned to play melody on guitar because I cant sit long enough to practice. I can sight read with the keyboard, but not at that point with guitar, and probably never will be cos I'm just not that strong or skilled enough!

Keep it up 🙂 there are so many lessons on youtube to do if you find one you like to follow.

As a beginner, I'd recommend learning via guitar tablature (guitar tabs). It's a very literal guide of, 'place this finger on this string and on this fret'. If you want to go further with lessons, then you can learn how to actually read music properly and go from there.

Another thing I recommend is slowing down the tempo of a song as you learn it.

Funny you mention, those are the songs I first learned as well. Before I ended up switching to bass because guitar was too difficult for me. 😆
Once I switched to bass, I was able to play songs in their entirety, not just the intro. I'm not very good at all, but I was chuffed to be able to get through an entire song, and then learn more as I continued.

Haven't played for a very long time though - maybe I'll pick it up again someday.

Nice! I've started learning tabs - very helpful. So far I know a few chords, and I'm starting to get strumming, at least the down-up pattern. I found a good YouTube video that explained it very well, plus I got some beginner workbooks. I do have the eventual goal of learning to read sheet music.

My husband is looking at getting me an electric guitar that fits me, too.
I'll have to try slowing the tempo down while learning a song!
 
I was scared of the big commitment so I chose learning to play the ukulele instead. 😊
I play the chords and some riffs but not much else yet.

Yes I'm currently about a month or so into learning guitar. Primarily acoustic, but my husband is urging me to find an electric I like at our local Guitar Center. Seems like Telecasters and I get along well lol
 
Hey, glad to hear you've got the bug!
Yes, if you are just starting out an electric guitar it much easier to learn on as they are way easier to play and not so hard on your fingers.
A Tele would be a great first guitar to seriously start learning on. The key to any first guitar is to have a proper setup done on it before you take it out of the store. That's the one thing that discourages most beginners is that their guitar is too hard to play because of a lack a of proper setup. There are many inexpensive & off brand guitars out there nowadays that play and sound just as good as the expensive name brand ones if they are setup correctly from the get go!

I love my acoustic but that electict is way smaller and easier to handle lol.

I'm doing fairly well on learning chords, despite the fact that being double jointed makes my fingers collapse sometimes while fretting - I have to consciously remember to arch them. I can do G, C, Em and D6/9 but strumming?
Oh, that is HARD.

I've been working on A Horse With No Name and it wants me to do a DDUUDU pattern but for that is deceptively hard, lol. Just messing around and strumming a basic DUDU pattern I'm fairly good with using my wrist and keeping the momentum, but when it gets even a little bit more complex, I stumble lol

Also looking ahead, barre chords just look plain evil haha.
 
Also learn D, E, which is just adding one more finger to your Em, and A. knowing those chords will allow you to play a whole range of other songs.
What kind of acoustic do you have?

And I love my guitar, though I am looking forward to getting an electric. My husband is adamant and not backing down on that. Hehe.
I definitely have a tendency to overthink and overcomplicate things, so learning to kind of switch off my mind and play has been rather helpful. No thinking, just strumming, not letting myself criticize myself too much.

When you're trying to learn your always looking down at your hand to make sure you put your fingers in the correct spots so yeah, your gonna get a headache, or at least a neck ache. To avoid that you can practice in front of a mirror so you're not looking down all the time.

You sound prepared! Enjoy the journey! 😀

If by 'fit' you mean size-wise (?), you can look into getting a short-scale guitar. Frets are spaced closer together.

My husband said he felt the Telecaster had a thinner neck and when he watched me play, said I was much smoother, plus my acoustic is a thicc boy lol

I'm really enjoying things. I originally started because our youngest enjoyed me playing around on my husband's electric and then I just decided I'm gonna buckle down and actually learn this year.

I'm double jointed, so sometimes if I press too hard, my joints collapse and I accidentally mute strings, so I've had to learn to be very aware of my fingers and keeping them arched.
