Where's the love for Andrew?

i don't know why so many people find him annoying. I find him annoying sometimes and i sometimes think, why you? why not jonathan? but then he talks about star wars and other geeky stuff i love and i love him again.

He was a writer's pet character for sure, but that never really bothered me. You know, this is obviously just divergent tastes, but I found Anya to be pure annoying in S7, and Andrew to be one of the funniest characters. He had so many nerd lines that my own inner nerd found just hilarious.

I am a nerd and I love sci-fi and still I never found Andrew funny at all. And even if I did, this isn't a sitcom - why put a character in the show just to crack jokes? What reason would Buffy and the rest to accept him as one of them instead of send him to jail where he belongs?

Your right, it isn't a sitcom, but come on, that entire cast is funny. I realize that someone like Xander is a bigger (and deeper) character, but there are a lot of episodes where his only role is comedy. I mean, Buffy has always been a genre-bending show. I see what you mean about Andrew belonging in jail (kinda), but at the same time, by the time he stops being the Scoobies prisoner and sort of joins their crew, the vast majority of Sunnydale has already evacuated, including the police.

And "Episode 1 boring" was hilarious.

Well, I have much the same problem with Xander after S3 and Anya but sometimes they were actually relevant to the plot and since Xander was friends with Willow and Buffy it's much easier to accept his presence even when he isn't doing much. Anya is mostly a comic relief character but the big difference that I find her funny, despite being annoyed by the ease with which she was accepted by the Scoobies.

More importantly, the show has proven it can create plenty of comedy without the need for characters who are comic relief only, I can't help but see this as a regression. In S6-7 instead of everyone getting funny lines, it's a few characters who get like 95% of those lines. It's just lazy writing - "Oh, we can't think of anything else, let's have Andrew make a Star Wars joke number 394856 or Anya make an inappropriate comment about sex for 458454th time".

I haven't seen much Andrew hate (but then again, only been apart of the fandom for like a year). I do like Andrew though. He's funny, even if I don't understand half of his "nerd" jokes. But sometimes I do (like the Dragon Ball Z one!). I read that if Buffy would've gone on for another season, Tom Lenk would've been promoted to a series regular. As it is, Andrew appears in the comics too (but I haven't actually read them . . .). But long story much shorter, I like Andrew 🙂

I've always liked Andrew. I didn't know people actually didn't like him or that there was a lot of people who didn't.
