Since 16, I've always identified with the character of Angel. Even more so now...

I'm escaping my past (lot of hurt there), I've distanced myself from what I would consider to be bad people and acquaintances (that's where the hurt comes from), always trying to be a better person, struggling to fit in to a crazy ever-evolving society / world, I'm old fashioned which makes this even harder...

I've always been the kind of person watching things from a dark corner (even in my club years), I feel like a very old soul, I'm very spiritual, love anything unusual, I've become somewhat reclusive in recent years and I spend most my time in my crypt nowadays (my home lol), and I want to find some amazingly beautiful female slayer to share a relationship with...

I've been waiting a long time, but I know she has to be out there somewhere...

Now, Which Buffy / Angel character do you identify with and WHY?

Anya. I know what its like to feel like to drift through these stages in your life which you don't have much control over, and still feel you have no self.

I can also identify with the awkwardness of Fred and Willow, as well as a large majority of Buffy in season 6. Also, Faith. When she tangles herself in that mess, as I have myself heaps of times, like her, I deliberately go into the mess more to avoid consequences.

Fred!!!!!! Pretty much 1,000 percent. Physically we're very similar and emotionally as well, I come off weak but I'm stronger than I seem,

I love Anya...she was awesome. Probably my second favourite female character after Buffy (Faith being my no.3).

I guess there is also *some* Xander in me... I like to make people laugh, I can be zany and awkward too sometimes...

For me it's a cross between Angel and Buffy.

I've always liked to try and emulate characters I admire, in books and on screen. I think Buffy is a very cool character to connect and identify with not only because she's awesome, but because a big part of her journey is being alone and taking time to realize that she truly isn't. I think that's true of a lot of people.

With Angel, I can see a lot of myself in as well. I got separated from most of the people I was close with after high school for a long, long time. It was lonely and it wasn't fun, and after a while you kind of lose that sense of connecting with other people simply because you aren't around people that often. Or at least, that's how I felt, and that always seemed like something Angel had too.

But without question, I try and take a lot of Angel and Buffy. I have no shame in saying that a big part of who I am today is because of them. Plus, I've had the Angel haircut going for some time now (secret? Lots, and I mean lots, of mousse. Big time) 🙂

Hmmm....for a lot of parts I've always related most to Buffy (especially during my teenage years). Only child, my Mum's a single parent (though we're a lot closer I think that Buffy was shown with hers. And we don't have any big secrets. And I also don't really like my Father which Buffy seemed to. Well until after season 2 when they seemed to drift apart randomly) and I'm definitely a leader rather than a follower (it even says that on my nursery report 😛.) I've gone through a lot of bad stuff years before people on average normally go through it- lost people, been in bad situations, had some crazy CRAZY things happen, but I still keep fighting and refuse to let things get me down. And on a lighter note, despite being intelligent, I do have the occasional airhead moments much like Buffy does, haha.

BUT I'm less like Buffy is in season 6 and season 7; I'm not one to get down about a bad situation. My attitude is yes you're sad/tired/etc but you can't be that forever. You have to eventually get up, dust yourself off and carry on. I mean I understand why Buffy was the way she was in season 6 and why she made certain decisions in season 7, but those would have not been my choices; you get me? Also I couldn't have fed Dawn those awful burgers (I'm so anti-fast food it's unbelievable. Even Subway is only in desperate circumstances). No matter how tired you are, how busy everyone is, you HAVE to cook a decent meal; seafood linguine takes like 5 minutes.

That said, I think I also have aspects of Giles, which I don't think I really had when I was younger. An inability to hold back the sarcasm, a love for music- both the classics and classical. And if I hear another shop play Gangam Stye or whatever it's called I will slap the manager with a pair of Accessorize gloves. And when I moved to NYC for work reasons for a time, I definitely felt the whole Brit-lost-in-America thing. A day didn't go by when friends didn't, lovingly, mock my accent or something outstandingly British that I did. But I do not share his love for tea. The only hot drinks I like are Hot Vimto (and Ginger tea when feeling ill. :-D).

Tbh, I don't actually feel like I really identify with any of the characters that much. There are certain aspects of each character that I do id with, but for the most part I feel I'm pretty different.

If I had to choose though, I would say Cordelia. Whenever I do those quizzes where you find out what character you are, I always get Cordy. I think mostly I'm similar to her when it comes to her sarcasm....and her obsession with fashion 😉. Also, her loyalty to her friends (on Angel not Buffy, obviously) is something that is pretty similar to me aswell.

Oh and I suppose my love of music is kinda Oz like aswell...or maybe a little more Lorne. I do really identify with Lorne when in season 2 he talks about how horrible Pylea is because there is no music.

Well said, most definitely! I know what you mean I had an Angel hair cut from 16 right through to 26. I used to take in my Angel photo cover comic to show them exactly what I wanted, until my hairdresser knew me so well that I just had to say, "the usual cut please".

Regrettably my hairs thinned out a little in recent years, so can't get away with it anymore, instead I've got the shaved head look, which actually suits me quite well and all 😎

Same here. I don't truly see myself in any of the characters. If I had to choose, I would say Spike, even though he's a guy.

When I was younger I identified so deeply with Faith that I used to blindly ignore a lot of her flaws because I just felt so connected to her.

I know what it's like to constantly screw up and feel like a failure, to feel like the world is against you. I have been a victim of all sorts of abuse and I know what it's like to feel that you'll never escape the darkness that comes from being victimised so badly. I empathise with the cynical, jaded front that one puts up after too much hurt and I really, really understand the deep-rooted need for love and approval and the heartbreak and disappointment that comes when it isn't received.

Well said.

I agree, well said
For me it's mainly Faith that I've always identified with, still do when I watch the show but maybe not as much 🙂

Mostly with Buffy and Spike. Partly, with Faith. Sometimes with Xander. But Buffy still is the character I relate to the most.

(when I visit governmental services in Russia, I strongly relate to Angel in season 5 🙂))

Stunning, you never stroke me as a personality who seriously enjoys violence in personal relationship.

I once did a BtVS survey questionnaire and came up as 80% Willow vs 70% Cordelia. That was weird too , I guess.

It's not violence that attracts me. With Buffy, it's her endless struggle for being taken seriously. With Spike, it's self-reinvention, ability to love against all odds, inner vulnerability hidden behind the facade of braggart and cynic (I know that you have a different opinion on him - so it's just my subjective take). With Faith, it's her fierce loyalty to her friends and her ability to withstand all the twists of fate PtB subject her to.

I'm not a violent person. When I rewatch BtVS I usually skip the fights, unless there are dialogues. I guess if I do a questionnaire I would be 100% Willow. 🙂

IMHO, Faith mostly made her own bed to sleep in, and that after having an advantage of being a Slayer and which 99.999% of girls from troubled families don't get to begin with. As for her 'loyalty', she is very selective in that - meaning that the only folks who gain her 'loyalty' are usually pseudo-father figures (Angel included). So, no I don't see her as either loyal or able to withstand. She , in fact, drops every enterprise of hers at the second sight of trouble and looks for a quick fix/easy way out. But this belongs in Faith' character discussion thread.

Btw, I personally think that 'identify with' means what character traits you think you possess rather than like/admire. Myself I don't identify with any of my three favorites, although Cordelia is likely a good match. Grin. Having a Big Mouth and all.

PS

I agree that Spike has vulnerable side under the braggart facade - it just does not give him any brownie points with me. Because frankly, everybody has their vulnerable side and IMHO dealing with being unloved is a universal problem. I cannot ever come close to liking a male character who persists on blaming all their trouble on all the 'bloody women'. I suppose it has to do with personal history and experience.

I identify myself a bit with Fred. Nerd sweet and shy, but if she gets angry, it can become very dangerous. I could say that these are also the characteristics of Willow, but on Fred I can see more, some of my characteristics. The love of science is one of these.

In an online survey questionnaire, I was Angel, 70% and 50% I was Connor, but the questions were too predictable. Easy affect the results

I would identify with Clem. He is perfectly happy to be alone but always gracious and sociable when friends arrive. He has the sense of humour (in Potential, 7ABB12) to gather all the girls close to him then have all the extra ears, tentacles and whatnot spring up out of his face. Fun guy to be around!

And the actor who plays Clem (James Leary) graduated in engineering, same as me.

Jonathan, with Oz and Xander close seconds.
I took one of those 'who are you most like' tests, and I came up with Oz. I am often very quiet and have no big range in emotions.
However, Jonathan and I are similar in every way except for three things: I've never been evil (Temoporary or otherwise), I'm taller than 4 feet (I'm 5'7', to be exact), and I've never brought a gun to school. Then again, Jonathan is essescially the aspects of every nerd alive, so that makes sense.

The characters I most identify with are Oz and Xander. Oz, since I'm the lead guitarist in a band, and we're both pretty quiet but deep thinkers, and Xander because we're both massive nerds. Also, I do slightly identify with Angel, with the whole 'trying to get away from past' thing, but that's only because I've been in that situation before, and have since got out of said situation (mostly)
