The first time I watched Buffy and Angel, there were many characters I either couldn't stand or just didn't care for. Upon a rewatch or two, I found myself liking certain characters more. I was just wondering if anyone else felt this way about certain characters. For me, off of the top of my head, some characters I liked more after a rewatch or two:

Joyce- The first time I watched BTVS, I was so focused on the Scoobies that I always felt like Joyce was just in the way. While she did have her moments ("Let Joycie in!"), I always preferred the episodes she wasn't in, or didn't have a big role in, and didn't mind when she died (although I did cry during Anya's speech in "The Body"). Upon rewatching the show, I was able to see the big picture more, and saw that, even as a minor character, Joyce still played a big role in the show, and I was much sadder when she died.
Jenny- I never had anything against Jenny, but the first time I watched the show I just felt like her entry seemed sort of forced. Now I really like her and get heartbroken when I watch Angelus kill her.
Wesley- I completely hated Wesley during Buffy and carried that hatred over the Angel. I'm rewatching Angel right now, and I seem to hate Wesley much less. I find myself giving him a chance this time around and am growing to like him more.

Giles-didn't think much of him at first, but now I love him
Dawn-Although I still don't like her much, she's much more tolerable now, and I can enjoy her character without finding her annoying as hell
Buffy-yes, at first she wasn't even in my top character although she's the main character, I always enjoyed her but now she's has a spot in my at least top 5 characters.
Gunn-Really didn't like him at first, now he's a character that I enjoy

There's probably more but those are just the one that came at the top of my head.

On BTVS the big one for me is Riley. He's not one of my favorites now or anything, but I like him a lot, whereas when I was first watching I absolutely detested him. After how invested I was in the Buffy/Angel relationship, and then to carry that sentiment on with "I Will Remember You", essentially telling the audience, "they can't be together now, but they should be", I found it extremely hard to get into Riley at all. It didn't help him in my eyes later on in the series either when it became clear that Spike was into Buffy. By that point, I had accepted that Angel wasn't going to come swooping back onto the scene anytime soon, I liked Spike a lot, and I still didn't like Riley. He just never had a chance.

But upon re-watching the series a few times, he's perfectly fine. Knowing in advance that he isn't designed to be Buffy's be-all-end-all romance makes it a lot easier to like him.

On Angel, I like Gunn a lot more know than I did when I first watched the series. I didn't really dislike him or anything, I just didn't really have any feelings toward him at all. I like him now though, and find him to be an interesting character.

Probably my biggest change isn't a single character. It's the total casts of both shows as a whole. I used to always say that Buffy was the better overall show and that the Scoobies were the superior gang, but I've completely shifted my opinion on that now. I find the entire Angel cast to be much more layered, much more complex, and far better friends than Buffy's team. And I like AtS more than BTVS.

I'd have to say Riley as well. Mostly for the reasons stated above. He's a good guy that just wasn't meant to end up with Buffy- I can appreciate this more now after many rewatches.
However, I'm sure I'm not the only one when I say that the more I rewatch Buffy- the less I like some of the characters. I'm almost always searching for their flaws.
