Which characters overstayed their welcome?

Uhm....why I can't come up with a character?

Maybe Connor...but only cause he was downright annoying and I had zero interest in him.
And on BTVS, the potentials. Oh, so..so pointless, so ungrateful.

And btw, am I the only one who loves Andrew?

I also share your love of Andrew. :D
I would definitely say Spike, especially in Season 7 of Buffy and Season 5 of AtS. There really was no good reason to bring him onto Angel (even though I do enjoy the banter between him and Angel). However he added nothing to the storyline.

Andrew is another one who should never have been brought back, once again he added almost nothing to the story.

The Potentials should never have been introduced, full stop.

I was never comfortable with them bringing Lindsay back in Season 5 of AtS, especially considering his storyline had pretty much run its' course and bringing him back, especially with the storyline that they gave him, seemed unneccessary and a step backwards for him.

I agree about Spike going over to "Angel!!
Dawn post Season 5: She does NOTHING in Seasons 6 and 7 excpet be annoying and trying to make eveyone pay attentiion to her. Plus causing trouble forcing Buffy to rescue her every episode or two. She is not likeable and has no purpose, so why keep her?
Anya post "Selfless": After she gets turned human, she does literally nothing until she dies, so it might have been better if she had died in "Selfless" since they were going to kill her anyway.
Ben in Season 5: Why was he in so many epiosdes? 14 out of 22? Just as a potential love interest and eventually revelaed host for Glory? He was in more episodes than The Master, The Mayor, Adam, AND Glory herself! Does that seem right? Plus I couldn't stand him.
Harmony in Angel: Okay, her guest spot in Season 2 was good. But why did they have her in the entire 5th season of Angel? The only episodes she should have been in (If at all) were "Conviction", "Just Rewards", "Destiny", "Harm's Way" and maybe "You're Welcome". Technically, she shouldn't have even been sired. Her only purpose was being Spike's rebound.

Dawn - In Season 5, she had a purpose. Come Season 6, she's pretty much just there, with no real development.

Riley - After Season 4 and The Initiative stuff, he didn't really seem to do that much up until the point where he went to get bitten by vampires and leave the show.

Cordelia - Not talking about in Angel here, she's fine in that show, but after she breaks up with Xander, they seemed to keep coming up with new reasons to keep her in the show (usually 'her going to the library to see Wesley)

Even though I love Angel and Spike's fights in season 5 a lot of the episodes there was no point of having Spike 🙁

So for me Parker, Connor, Dawn, Kate, Riley I hate all of them well Dawn I like a bit

Okay, let's see, some people are really not going to like this...

Angel. Not on his own show, but on Buffy. Twice. Killing him at the end of Season 2 made for a great finale, and while I like what they ended up doing with him for half of the season, that wasn't entirely necessary.

Then came Amends, and... his story was over there. His story on Buffy was over, and he should've left at the end of that episode, especially with that ending (don't get me started on that). At that point, The Powers had spared him to show that they had something greater in mind for him, and that's the point at which he should've left to find that destiny. Instead, he spends the rest of the season not being critical to the plot, and barely doing anything interesting (he is interesting in Consequences (for one scene) and Enemies, but only in relation to Faith, which is very telling), until he's reached the end of his contract and his show can start (really, it feels like that's the only reason he's still around at that point).

Anyway... (I don't hate Angel, I really, really don't, and I like Buffy and Angel together for the first two seasons, but it just doesn't work in Season 3.)

I can't think of any other ones, other than characters I just don't like (Riley, Kennedy), so... yeah... that's all...

I totally agree! Overstayed welcome on BtVS; Didn't have the same emotional impact after s2

Yeah, I don't agree with this. I can understand the line of thinking, even if I don't agree with it, that Angel's story had finished on BTVS following "Becoming" or "Amends", but I think that five seasons of his own spinoff were produced and his character continued to evolve as, in my opinion, a fantastic one, kind of shows that he hadn't overstayed his welcome. If anything, I thought the conclusion to "Amends" was a new beginning for Angel, as opposed to the end of his story.

I agree that his scenes with Faith in S3 were excellent, but I don't think you can really just attribute that to Faith. I mean, look at the Angelus/Faith stuff in S4. It's awesome, and the coin is flipped on who the focus is on but personally, I thought Angel/Angelus' presence both times was what made those scenes so cool.

I suppose though, that at the end of the day it's just a matter of opinion. I thought Angel's arc reached its high point in "Amends", but I was into it throughout S3.

Okay, going to need to clarify a couple things, since it obviously wasn't clear what I meant:

Angel's story wasn't over after Amends, but the proper place for that story was on his own show, not having him sticking around on Buffy doing pretty much nothing for the rest of the season.

And I didn't mean that the scenes were good just because of Faith -- Angel's character was good there, but those were the only times he was good from that point on in the series. With the decision he'd made to change his life in Amends, his place was with Faith more than with Buffy -- they worked together better from that point on (seriously, Five by Five/Sanctuary is amazing, and the end of Judgement is one of my favorite scenes in the entirety of both series) than Angel did with Buffy. That's what I meant -- it was about those two characters together, not that Faith alone, made those parts good. (And I've no intention to turn this into a shipping war, especially since that isn't even what I'm referring to here.)

(And when I said that some people really weren't going to like this, I was thinking about you specifically -- I knew this would start a conversation. I think we also need to have that discussion about Amends at some point -- I need to rewatch the episode before since I don't remember much of it, but I'm interested to hear what you have to say about it, and I'm taking up way too much space in these parentheses, I should stop this soon.)

Haha, yeah, I had a feeling. I'm going to rewatch the episode tonight and start a thread about it. Sounds like a good topic
Aw, I love both Connor and Dawn and I don't see why people wouldn't want them in the shows. They brought a lot to the table and really tugged on my heart strings.

I think Jasmine over stayed her welcome. And totally ruined Cordelia and gave her a crappy ending. ;(

I also didn't understand the whole build up on Gwen. I felt like her character was supposed to be on much more and I got interested in her story, and then she just vanished? If that was the point all along she could've just been on one episode, not more and made me care about her.

I don't think any of the primary characters out lived their usefulness in the series - I see that Connor is listed, and I would agree except that his reconnecting with his father at the end is the only peace and joy that Angel ever gets in the entire series that is directly connected to Angel. Connor, IMO, was the grace & redemption that Angel so desperately sought so Connor is a vital character for Angel's story.

Dawn over at Buffy and even Xander are the only characters that I can see as potentially having left the series - actually the one character that I do think could have been taken out would have been Anya - and the perfect time would have been right after "Selfless" -

Maybe Xander was not used as much in the last season but he was a good contrast voice to Spike when he comes back - The only place that I can see Xander leaving that makes sense to me is if Anya was taken, instead of Hallie and Xander decided he had to go and find a new life for himself - go on some kind of "walk about" and he could still have been brought back for the final as Angel was.

I think Xander overstayed his welcome for sure,he was useless in season seven, practically unneeded in season six,and wasn't even that funny in either of the last two Buffy seasons. Which is pretty much the main reason he was there anyway, what other purpose did he actually serve. i would've had him die instead of Tara in season 6.

SPIKE. Without a doubt, no questions asked. Even when I liked him, his presence felt strained at times, there's just too many times when you wonder "Why do the Scoobies still have him around".

Spike was an amusing character as a recurring villain, and I can see why he became popular, but it seemed blatantly obvious that the writers brought him back because he was popular, and didn't really know how to make him relevant to the plot until S6 - and at that point, he'd already been a season regular for two years. I feel like he should have been kept as a recurring guest star until there was more of a place for him in the main story.

I also kind of agree that following "Amends", and particularly with the hindsight of knowing that he will be leaving at the end of the series for his own show, Angel felt a bit irrelevant in Buffy. It's not too badly stretched, given that he does leave half a season later, but I think he would definitely have overstayed his welcome had they tried to keep him on Buffy any longer.

Honestly, I can understand why people don't like Connor- and in S4, he is severely annoying- but I don't begrudge him his S5 appearances. In fact, I really enjoyed them. Like it or not, Connor is the most important thing in Angel's life, once he is born, IMO, more important than the rest of the gang, more important than Buffy, etc. I think it's nice to have Connor return, and remind us of why Angel did what he did in taking over Wolfram and Hart.

Spike, they should have left him at the end of season 2 driving off with Dru.

Spike (he really should've stayed dead after Buffy- his story, the story of a romantic who became a big bad and then a good guy, was done- now he just wastes comic space)

Robin Wood- what was his purpose? Oh, hey the series has ended, do' ya think Faith needs a boyfriend? You do! Well then how about this guy we don't know what to do with? Perfect. (And, for the record, he is so not prettier than Faith. 😡)

Andrew- after putting up with this...turd for all of season 7 there's just...no pay off for keeping him around at all. After what he did to Buffy in S9 Spike should've snapped his little twerp neck. 🙂

I can't think of anyone for Angel...David Nabbitt? (he was only in two though...) Oh, Knox, Knox, I hate him. what a pointless character. 😡

Spike and Harmony. They could have just run away into the sunrise...I mean sunset together, never to be seen again. 😉
