Firstly, I think you are missing my point.

Most New Zealanders, would get offended if you consider the entire area to be called "Australia". As there is huge debate surrounding the merging for the two countries. (Plus theres the whole rivalry between the countries, kinda like America and Canada I suppose). Most people around here call the area Australasia, or Oceania. Even if they may not be the official name of the continent.

So for the purpose of the poll, being an Australian, and to include my New Zealand buddies, I called it Australasia, (Or Oceania, as CharmedSlayer mentioned).

Personally I don't think it really matters if you want to use the word Australasia, or not. It can fit. I'm just saying if you'd like to debate semantics, such discussion is possible. The commonly accepted definition is Australia is the continent.

In fact here's another one Australia is not always included in the region of Oceania.
 
I'm in England right now! But Im from New Zealand, but i moved to Australia, but then i recently moved to Qatar. But im in England on holiday...

Europe (Scotland) here.

And all through school we were taught Australasia was the continent. So much for my C in Geography, guess it doesnt mean much 😛

ok, i don't really remember much of my Geography lessons, 'cause i pretty much repress anything not art related, lol, but i vaguely remember being taught that the continent was Australasia, too. maybe the UK should think about reviewing what they're teaching!

Do you remember how many continents they told you there were, because if you use the common definition there's 7. If you use the geological definition with Australasia, and Eurasia there's 6.

I wonder if it's a regional definition thing. Do you have any local reference books like encyclopedias or atlases? Mine give Australia, and Europe and Asia as separate continents.

I've seen continent questions on the American quiz show Jeopardy where Australia was the answer. I wonder if they would have given the person points if he had answered with the geological term of Australasia.

The 7-continent model is usually taught in Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe, China and most English-speaking countries. The 6-continent combined-Eurasia model is preferred by the geographic community, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Japan. The 6-continent combined-America model is taught in Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Iran and some other parts of Europe. The 5-continent model is taught in the Iberian Peninsula, some other parts of Europe[citation needed], and many Latin American countries.

Oceania or Australasia are sometimes used in place of Australia. For example, the Atlas of Canada lists seven continents and names Oceania.
