To the best of my knowledge, there hasn't been a poll on this topic yet either. So here goes: What is your favorite season of Angel (television only). Please vote and discuss if you'd like.
 
It was a tie between 2 and the oh so often disliked 4...

I went with 2 because of the reasons Janas stated more or less - it felt like genuine Angel... before they started trying harder (as happens with more or less all shows). Though 4 comes at a close second... now. I think season 4 is perfection on DVD (not so much on TV) because it's so operatic and dramatic, perfect for marathon watching. Season 2 is more easily enjoyable however, TV or DVD or whatever format you chose, and that's why it got my vote 🙂
 
Season 2, it was almost perfect, although I am also partial to season 3. My main reasoning is that these series were group centric, and Cordy was especially evident.
 
I've only seen them all the way through once, so I will decline to vote until I've had more watches to really think about it, but at this moment in time, it would probably be season 1 or 2. I LOVED the whole Pylea thing (and, in reading the wiki page to recheck which season Pylea appeared in, I discovered that a certain Mr Whedon appears in that alternate world. This made me do the dance of finding out awesome trivia which may or may not be correct, and made me lean slightly more in S2's favour) but the show is markedly different after Doyle dies and while it's still awesome, I always kind of feel like everything would have been different (although maybe in bad way, of course) with Doyle around so S1 figures in my reasoning because it is the one with Doyle.
 
Season 4. Yeah, I know.

It had its mistakes but it had lots of good stuff too.

Epic storyline, Spin The Bottle, Dark Wes/Lilah, Angelus in a cage playing mindgames, The Beast, 'That dream episode', Faith being awesome, Faith and Wesley being awesome, 'Vampire With A Gun!'
Willow showing up actually being Willow-like...actually all of Orpheus- every single bit, 🙂
Gwen Raiden, Players (the only Gunn-centric ep I actually like.)

I can forgive Conner because I know what he's gonna turn into, I can forgive evil Cordy becuase it isn't really her and when she does come back she's herself again...(even if its for one episode.)

Plus I can forgive the ending because the ending isn't the horrid Jasmine arc, the ending is 'Home', which sets up S5 which is the second best season. 🙂

For me it's a tie between 1 and 2. One because it has Doyle and Kate, two of my favourite characters in the entire verse. 2 because it is so epically dark without feeling like the writers are trying too hard.

Unlike Buffy, there's no Angel Seasons that I think of as 'bad' per se, just less good, so its harder to rate them- they're all quite close together.

S1- Has some really good stand alone episodes and is by far the most-underratted season.

S2- Has a fantastic, dark arc that goes through two thirds of the season...and then we get to 'Belonging', which is a little flat, and then the terribly weak comedy three parter.

S3- Is consistantly good, I like Holtz and all the W&H scheming (although I dislike Linwood.) and Wesley's fall from grace. But apart from 'Waiting In The Wings' and 'Loyalty', it doesn't have any truly great, memorable episodes imo.

S5- Is like S1, only with richer characterisation, bigger stakes, and more heartbreaking storylines. Even though it kills off Codelia, Fred and Wesley 🙂eek🙂 I still love it, its that good. (Plus Lindsey.) 🙂

It's odd, but I voted season 5. Despite my hate for Spike, Eve and the near total lack of Cordelia, I love the rest of it so much that it's still number one. With the exception of TGIQ, I think every episode from "Soul Purpose" all the way to the end is stellar. Acker and Denisof steal the show when the Illyria arc started up, but everyone was fantastic.

After that, season 2 is a VERY close second. The Darla arc is one of my favorites in the Buffyverse, and Angel was still a badass brooding character and the not the total dork he would sometimes become in later seasons.

After that, I'd probably rate it 1>3>4, though I don't think any of them were bad. Even season 4 has several highlights, and is much more entertaining than its sister season, BtVS S7.
 
Season 2 is my favorite, it's what kept me watching the show and I think it's where I started watching it when it aired. I love the Darla arc, it's so great. I love dark Angel and then him coming back to the gang. We get some character development with everyone. We get introduced to Lorne and Fred, who is my favorite character. Even though season 4 has a terrible plot, there's a lot of stuff I like that make me like it overall.
 
Season 5 for me. The idea of the Angel Investigations unit taking charge of a Satanic company and trying to do some good is interesting. The introduction of Illyria, the death of Fred and the demise of Lindsey and Wesley are dramatic moments. Not Fade Away was one of the best series endings ever. All episodes are excellent (except maybe The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco). But the main tension of the season is whether the Angel Investigations group will be corrupted by the system they are trying to change.
 
I had to pick five.. I felt the show could have taken off from this season.. like it revamped itself, although it ended. If felt fresh and on top of itself. The scale seemed larger while the early seasons seemed like Buffy, in LA, with a smaller budget and cast, IMO. Althought, I love the Darla arc to death, and Holtz.. Conner had me questioning if I liked him most of season 4.. although the season was pretty rad.
 
Definitely Season 2 for me. I love the Darla and Pylea arcs so much. Cordelia is still Cordelia, Wes hadn't gone dark yet (though I do like his character development through the series), and the original mission is just very intact.
 
I like Season One the most because it and season 2 are the only seasons that seem to be an exact continuation of Angel, Cordelia and Wesley after Buffy 3. Plus there's Doyle, the Faith episodes, Buffy actually crosses over in this season, as does Oz and Spike. "In the Dark" remains my favorite episode of the show.
Season 2 is next, because the story arc was fantastic (I get shivers every time I watch Drusilla re-sire Darla right after she resorted to her human death and Angel promised to stay with her, only for her to be turned evil against her will). 2 ranks second because of Pylea. I was never really that enthused about that part.
Season 5 is third because, let's face it, one of the main reasons why so many people like it is because of Spike. But I like it for the Wolfram and Hart manipulation of the group, the tragedy, and of course Spike (hehe). And the finale was EPIC.
Then comes a tie for fourth/fifth. Season 3 has a great story arc involving Connor, Wesley, and Holtz, but some parts of the seaosn make me not want to watch it (The Angel/Cordy romance that appeared out of nowhere and was totally out of character for Angel). Season 4 is exactly the same way: amazing story arc, but is worsened by bad parts (Connor, Evil Cordelia). The main reason though, why I don't like seasons 3 and 4 is because Angel is WAY out of character. He's way too happy and smiling too frequently. He actually reminds me of his out-of-character attitude in the first two Buffy episodes.
So, to summarize, I rank the seasons thusly: 1,2,5,4,3. All five seasons are great, don't get me wrong, but 3 and 4 have many issues.
