As much as I adore AtS I'm still a Buffy gal at heart. It does help of course that it was the parent show of course.

Angel for the killer action/dark character drama and shades of grey morality.

Buffy for the warmth and the humour- which they always pulled off better imo.

I guess I favour Buffy by a nose because I really love more of the characters there- Buffy, Willow and Giles (and Angel and Faith when they appear).

Went with Angel, even though it's very close. I just prefer the darker atmosphere and the more operatic tone, and the morally gray themes in the story. I also love all the major characters all the way through from start to finish, where as the BtVS cast really starts to annoy me in the later years. If we were just talking seasons 1-5 of BtVS it would be dead even, but the last two seasons kill it for me.

It's hard because I think both shows are great but at the end of the day I think BtVS will always be my first choice.

I think AtS is the better show overall. But I prefer BtVS. Or maybe prefer is not the right word, but I've watched it much, much more than AtS. I think that as good as AtS is, it's just a harder show to watch thematically. Buffy I can watch on a loop and I don't ever get tired of it, but AtS is a bit heavy to do that with.

It's like Dollhouse, which might just trump both BtVS and AtS for me, but I couldn't rewatch it often.

I think I agree with absolutely everything you said here.
I think when they were running together the shows were pretty even. Sometimes one would be better and sometimes the other. Season 1-3 of Buffy however is my favourite part of the Buffyverse so Buffy comes out as clear favourite for me.

At its best I think Angel matches Buffy. But I just find Buffy to be more richer, and exciting as a show. It it balances the light and the dark so well, and just has so much to say about real life, but in a unique kind of way. And I do agree that overall the cast and character are a bit better, not to mention SMG's tour de force in the lead role.

To be honest, my answer to this changes pretty regularly. When I first watched them, it was BTVS hands down, but as an adult I think I appreciate Ats' grittier tone far more than I used to.

These days, it just tends to depend which show I'm watching most... and at the moment, I'm watching more Angel.

But they're interchangeably first and second place in my favourite TV shows.

I think that Buffy is seen as more the teen show is what elivates it further though. That a teen show can have such broad appeal and be so different from any other at the time or since is what marks it out as special.

Last year I would have said Buffy hands down. But after rewatching Angel I would say it's pretty close, but that Buffy wins by a little bit. And it's the humor I think that does it for. Angel is more dark and serious which is nice and I can appreciate it for the show it is, I just like the comedy in Buffy more. Plus I like more of the characters on Buffy.

See.. the humor is exactly why I dislike Buffy. I do not mind the comedy episodes, per se, just the general comedy tone I did not like. The dry wit as in the first two seasons of Angel (and less as Joss took over) was more to my taste. Brief rant... Cabin in the Woods would have been much better had it not the 'Joss' humor with it. Thats what devalues Buffy in my opinion.

Everyone has different tastes in humor, dry wit is not my taste.

Couldn't disagree more that is what gives Buffy its richless is how they can balance the two elements and still make you believe in the characters and story. CITW is like a fantastic post-modern essay, it is a film for both people who love and hate horror films. It is far more savage than you are giving it credit for, and unlike most modern horror movies.

Cabin in the Woods was a hot mess and it was badly edited and directed. There was a kernel of originality but the whole premise was blown in the first five minutes.
A vote for Buffy here. At the time both shows were on simultaneously, the watercooler talk agreed that the current Angel episodes were often better than Buffy episodes, but I have only rewatched Angel once whereas I can watch Buffy often. It seemed like Angel used some of the more outrageous themes that were a little too extreme for Buffy like the Pylea arc or fatherhood.

I love both shows - but Wesley's arc just grabs me. I'm not talking Fred and Wes, though that is great. Just the way he turned from being a dork with a surprising degree of ruthlessness to someone who would stab a girl in the shoulder to get information without blinking an eye. That tipped the balance for me.

Great point! I feel really bad for people who only know Wesley from Buffy and didn't see his transformation on Angel.

I love that scene in Release! Even Faith thinks t was too much.
I'm pretty jealous of all the people that really love Angel. I just can't seem to get into it at all, though I've never really been too much of a fan of Angel the character, personally. I'm not sure why.
BtVS wins for me!

Angel is not for everybody especially for those who want the lines between good and evil to be clear and to not mix with eachother. Angel is just a more mature show.

Do you think so? I saw it just a tad darker kinda Buffy in many respects, especially as Buffy touched on some pretty dark subjects itself in the later seasons.
