Which show was better Buffy or Angel?

Both have equally good and bad episodes. But since Buffy came first, I'd say Buffy. But Angel is just as good

Buffy, easily. Both were great shows, but Angel just lacked the thrall that Buffy had. I think the main thing I didn't like about Angel was that, aside from season 5, every season had a streak of really boring episodes based around the main arc, but there would be some really spectacular ones at the end. Plus, overall, it just wasn't quite as good...the plots weren't as interesting, the writing was stale at times, and, most importantly, the characters weren't as compelling. By the end of Buffy, I actually felt a personal connection to the main characters, but I can't say the same about Angel (as much as I loved a lot of the characters).
In my opinion, the only thing Angel had over Buffy was the visuals. They had better stunts, special effects, sets, et cetera, but they didn't compensate for the things that the show was lacking.

BUFFY!! I may only have seen season 1 of Angel and the first episode of season 2 but i don't care...i will eat bobs socks before i say Angel is better...i think the family like connections between the characters in Buffy is better then in Angel...Plus Angel's as dull as a table lamp..

Well... "Buffy"...
I love "Angel", because I love Fred, I love Angel, I love Cordelia, I love Lorne, I love (and hate...) "A Hole in the World", I love a whole bunch of episodes. But I started loving "Angel" only when S2 ended. Before that I only liked it (and well... not every time.). If it had lasted longer, "Angel" might have equalled Buffy in my opinion, but now it's just not enough, quantity-wise. The quality of two first seasons could have been forgotten if there had been two more great seasons. A bit like "Buffy", to me.

I love both but I have to go with Angel.
I prefer the darkness of Angel, though Buffy certainly displayed that at times, and the maturity of it, as the characters weren't teens.
Buffy had Spike, one of my favourite characters, but Angel had Lorne, my favourite and Spike. :biggrin:
Also I think it had a better male to female ratio.And no potentials thank heavens, though unfortunately Angel has Connor.

Really? I thought Buffy had a much better male to female ratio. There were a few more women than men, yes, but nothing too noticeable. Angel, on the other hand, was pretty much a sausage-fest, especially in the later seasons.

Although i love both shows, i went with Buffy. I just found it better overall. Characters, plots, more interesting episodes.
I was originally going to post "Since Buffy came first, it holds a place in my heart" but that sounds incredibly gay.

Aside from the fact that Angel had Willow in only 1 episode (which is not enough for such a fun of the girl like me :tongue05: ) I think Buffy was better at many levels.
I once had this conversation with my gl (it got pretty philosophical I might add 😀 ) and I was giving her my point of view, which is that, if you analyze both shows, at first Buffy might seem a more teenager show than Angel (which IMO it's a more pre-adult show) but thing is that Buffy captures and explore a wider range of themes and situations, whereas Angel it's a little bit more self-centered in the main character and his "mission/fate".
With Buffy, on the other hand, I think Joss experimented a little bit more and went farer than just Buffy's Mission, he gave each character a place and through his own metaphors and adaptations into the Buffy verse (like overdose of magic; promiscuity; 1st sexual relationship, friendship, and so on) Joss talked about real deep, strong subjects.
Anyway, I'll stop the cha chat now :shh: and conclude on the fact that IMO Buffy rocks more than Angel 😀

Angel - 3 good seasons, 1 - average season, 1 writing Cordelia out season - which equals a sh*t fest.

Buffy for me. Every aspect was better. I think Angel s1 and 2 were the only seasons on the same level as Buffy (it started to lose the plot from s3). And i dont get how Ats was more mature than Btvs. Maybe it is when compared to the high school years, but not when compared with the last few seasons of Buffy.

I prefer Angel. But saying that makes me feel like I'm sleeping with my best friend's partner, you know? Buffy is where it all began. But I just prefer the LA vibe, and I think it's darker than Buffy, and most of my favourite charcters are from Angel.
Buffy is amazing though, no doubt, I just think Joss' work got better and better, Buffy, Angel, Firefly..
And now Dollhouse. I really should start watching that soon.. But I feel like it's getting hyped up too hell, so I'm rebelling.

Quantity-wise? Buffy, hands down.
Not a fair comparison though, Buffy had two extra seasons, and the benefit of the main cast of Angel in its earlier years. The Buffy S3 ensemble was unrivaled by any season of either show.
I still have to go for Angel though. I liked the early noir style, and I liked that Angel often got to be like this real Detective/Super Hero, where Buffy put her friends and family before her mission until S7 & S8.
Really though, the two shows were so deeply interconnected, it was really like one huge fantastic show.
The one criticism I'd have for Buffy is that it was used as a soap box for Joss Whedon and Marti Noxon's pro-Feminism/pro-LGBT agenda. I've got nothing against their agendas, but I don't love TV with some veiled ulterior motive. Luckily, they were talented enough that the show worked that stuff into the storylines without compromising the entertainment value.
Angel was more straightforward. It was humanity vs. evil indoctrination, it may have conveyed a social agenda, but it was opened about that. Angel would walk into a room and spout off about Freewill, where Buffy would never walk into a room and call herself a symbol for feminism.
