it's not so much her lack of superpowers that disqualify her, but her status as an assassin for hire. I'd also say Punisher isn't deserving of the hero title either.

Oh, i don't know about that. Heroes comes in all shapes and sizes and because of all sorts of motivations. If your wife or girlfriend had been attacked or raped by some street thug and you found out that somebody like the Punisher had taken him out then i'm sure you would rethink his hero status.
Characters like the Punisher, Elektra, Mystique, Deadpool and even Wolverine may all have their darker sides and do what they do for less black and white reasons but ultimately all of the ones i just mentioned have done more good over the years than bad. Sometimes a little grey in the mix makes the world a better place.

sure, some heroes can benefit from a bit of gray, as you say. But I think the line has to be drawn somewhere. You mentioned Wolverine, and I think he's a character that's straddled that line, but the way he tends to be written now, is clearly a hero. I think you're confusing heroism and positive results. Punisher may kill scumbags, and that may end up benefitting some, but he does it solely to appease his own criminally insane mind. Mystique may occasionally work for the government or Xavier, but more often than not, it's to benefit herself, or get something she wants. Elektra just helped Wolverine and Shield take down Hyrda terrorists, but was it because she thought it was the right thing to do, or because she has an axe to grind with them?

Don't get me wrong because i know where you are coming from here. I doubt anyone would argue that the most of the characters i listed would not live up to the classic hero criteria. The likes of Captain America or Spider-Man are heroes in the truest sense of the word, doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do, no matter the cost to themselves.
I just believe that the days where that kind of heroism works are long gone. The way of the world today requires a more stern kind of heroism where the person in question is able to go that one step further when neccessary. Wolverine is one such character, not bound by the conventional hero rules of handing the bad guy over to the police when he deems it neccessary to finish the job himself.
I also won't argue that many of them do have their own motives for what they do. Certainly Deadpool and Mystique tend to work purely for self gain, however both are capable of truely selfless heroic acts which tells me that, whilst they have no objection to making a profit at the same time, they do want to do the right thing. You could argue that any police officer or fireperson only does what they do because they get paid for it but that wouldn't make them less of a hero to somebody whose life they saved.
The Punisher and Elektra are different in that they do what they do out of a sense of personal obligation for vengeance but again, at the end of the day, when they have done hat they have done the world is generally a safer place for the innocent.
The point being that most heroes have one reason or another for doing what they do, not all of them purely for the good of others, and maybe in this day and age it takes those heroes with less "heroic" natures to get the job done.

I dunno about Elektra, but being a quite a fan of the Punisher I can tell you that revenge is only what initiated this new approach, before he used to work as a either a cop or someone in the army (depends on which continuity.) Point is, he realised that fighting criminals the conventional way was not enough... which is why he became the "new" hero, like Wolverine.The Watcher said:
I do agree somewhat with the whole need for new heroes. I think that the real heroes are still way better... which is why I like Buffy just a tad bit more than Angel.

Personally I like them all. I love comics DC and Marvel but I went with the X-men in general because I just like the meaning behind them. Their just different and they get percecuted for it even though all their trying to do is make the world a better place for mutants and humans.
