Whitney Houston

So Whitney Houston has a new album coming out this fall, I think the album is September 1st. I'm not really a fan of hers but she did have a great voice, the only question is...does she still? After all that *snorty snorty*, I'm curious!! One of the songs leaked, what do you all think?

LOL No way! She's been out for a while for personal reasons (drugs) but not dead haahaha.
 
I really like the song. I think Whitney can come back because she's a great artist and I'm rather excited, even though a lot of her songs can be too lifetime-movie-ey for me.

Wait are you for real? Whitney is a legend!
The Beatles are boring and all their songs sound the same.
Obviously you have a right to your own opinion like I do, but acting like Whitney is just some "has been" or "nobody" is like acting that way about Elvis.

Ha, Whitney can't be dismissed because she's a legend but the Beatles are boring? You realize they are like the biggest musical legends out there, right? Whitney is nowhere close to the level of Elvis or the Beatles. She's all right, but seriously man, the Beatles and Elvis both changed music forever. Whitney really can't make that claim.

Lewis has stated that she idolized Houston as a little girl. The Beatles and Elvis are legends, I'm not denying that, I'm just saying I personally find ALL of the Beatles music to be similar and overrated.
Whitney has also changed music forever. Many have surpassed the "level" of Elvis and The Beatles. Mariah Carey has more #1's than Elvis, and with two more, she'll have more than the Beatles (in the USA).

I realize it may say that on wikipedia, but there were tons of huge black stars in music before Whitney. Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, and Jimi Hendrix are a few I could name just off the top of my head. There's also that Michael Jackson fellow who recently passed. I seriously doubt you've heard ALL of the Beatles music if you think that all their songs sound the same. For one thing, there were four of them and they all had their shots at vocals. That alone should account for some distinction. Also listen to some of their first songs and then some of their later material. They went from simple pop songs to songs that were pretty experimental and out there for their time period. And saying that having more number one hits places Mariah Carey ahead of Elvis or the Beatles is flawed for a number of reasons. For one thing, there's the fact that modern music is more based in singles than music in the 50s or 60s were. People bought albums in those days. For another thing, it assumes that Mariah Carey's songs will stand the test of time. The Beatles and Elvis have proven they can stand the test of time. I already couldn't tell you the last time I heard anyone playing any of Mariah Carey's hits from the 90s. I'm sure people do, but her old songs aren't inescapable like the old hits of The Beatles which nearly everyone is familiar with regardless of whether or not one likes them. Finally, number of sales isn't the only indicator of the quality of one's output in the first place. The Velvet Underground, for instance, sold very few records but proved so influential that you can hear their influence in many modern albums. Do Mariah and Whitney even write most of their own material? Actually, offhand I'm not sure Elvis did either but certainly the Beatles did.

Black Female artists. And yes, I realize Aretha and even Diana Ross were before Whitney, but Whitney was the actual breakthrough that made it so black female artists were no longer a taboo term. I PERSONALLY find the Beatles music boring. Their voices are all just boring and overrated. Elvis, Marilyn, The Beatles, all those people I think are just overrated. I like Marilyn, but really she was just the Paris Hilton (type person) of the 50's. See what I mean though?

I hear Mariah's AND Whitney's old music on the radio frequently. We can't really say if they will withstand the test of time yet...so...I also understand that sales and quality are two different things, but being a legend is being popular..which, for the most part, means sales. Mariah writes all of her own material (other than covers) and Whitney writes some of her own material.
 
Being popular is certainly part of being a legend, yes, but I wouldn't say the only factor or even the most important factor. I guess it's a difficult thing to say though as "legend" could mean different things to different people. But I would say in music, one's overall status would be a combination of popularity, critical reputation, longevity, influence, technical ablility, and cultural impact, among other things. Honestly, whether or not she has a very high number of sales or not, I've never heard anyone mention Mariah or Whitney close to the Beatles. You're right that it's all a matter of opinion insofar as picking your favorites. While I like The Beatles, they are not my favorite band either. But I think in terms of being legendary, there's just no question in my mind that they are leagues ahead of Whitney. In 2004, Rolling Stone compiled a list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Not that Rolling Stone has the definitive word on anything per say. Just saying the idea to me the idea that either of them has passed or neared the status of The Beatles is a big stretch. The Beatles seem to be ranked somewhere towards the top of just about every list whether it's best artist, best song, or best album.
 
I understand what you are saying. Another thing about being a legend is that it takes time. There hasn't been nearly enough time to immortalize these women. I mean Mariah is only 39. And I don't like Rolling Stone. It seems they always change their mind and they aren't very good at predicting what will and won't be a hit. LOL 😀

They can be fairly wishy washy. I remember when Weezer's second album came out, they wrote up a review about what a disappointment it was, then at the end of the year it made their list of best albums of 1996.
 
Less than excited. Considering my youth I will of course check it out but I wont expect much beyond a first listening.

The song wasn't bad. Not that I was superexcited or anything. But nice to listen to. As for the "status" of Whitney and Mariah compared to The Beatles, I'd say that they're "big" but still doesn't come close in my mind. And Whitney beating Mariah. But that's more based on the fact that I grew up with her music while Mariah to me is more someone that makes a few "good" songs more than actually comparing them. Both of them has some some pretty good voices for sure though.

Also Mariah is nearly as popular there as she is here.
I heard she is going to re-record it or something. Especially considering it's only a leak. Her voice is definitely different. A lot of her fans are saying it's a boring song and hopefully the album will be better as a whole than this just one. Both Whitney AND Mariah have albums coming out this fall. 😀
 
It would be nice to see her back. It's not really my type of music, but she does have a great voice. Hopefully she can clean up her act a bit, and get back on track.
Things sure weren't pretty there for a while. She does deliver a good "kiss my ass" though. 😀

I always kinda thought Whitney was done for. She destroyed herself, and the status she had by all the drugs. I never thought she would dare come back....But OK if she cleaned up, she deserves a chance
