Who do you think Buffy will end up with eventually?

I picked ''Other'' because I think there's no ''Mr. Right'' for Buffy. She'll date guys, but that will be it. Her life is a violent one and I expect her to die way before she can settle down.

Edit: Even more so considering that she shot down her best choice at having a normal relationship (see: Riley Finn).

I think I might be the only person who was completely enamoured with the "Cookie Dough Speech". Not for the analogy itself, but how buffy finally realised that she didn't have be defined by a significant other.

I remember being all sorts of talk about who she should end up with and more insultingly, who "deserves her", as if she is some sort of prize. What I liked about the speech is the realization that if one hasn't been able to make a relationship work it may not mean something is wrong with you. It was refreshing that she didn't feel pressure, especially at a young age, to force herself to fit some kind of romantic narrative.

Even the men in her life saw fit to tell Buffy what she wants and needs. Angel, Spike and Riley have all put words in her mouth in regards to how she feels about them and most of those words come from their own insecurities ("She doesn't love me" or "She deserves better" etc).

I don't know with whom she'll end up. I just hope that sense of autonomy is not compromised.

Like Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind" she will end up only with what she has and what she is. I don't see her settling down in the 'burbs with her stockbroker husband (or any husband) and 2.4 assorted children in her lifetime.

It was a little bit more complicated than that. And by “shot down” I meant that she was not ready to deal with what comes along with a *normal* relationship with a guy like Riley. She shut herself off throughout S5, and she put him aside. I know that there is a strong metaphor with Riley's late-night *bite-buddies* and prostitutes, but it was a way for him to try and feel what she was feeling. Plus, like he pointed out to her, he wanted someone who really needed him.

I know, I'm defending the guy people loves to hate, but you got to consider that in a relationship, both sides have their misgivings. Riley was an ass for telling her all of that the same day he thought of leaving Sunnydale, and he could be perceived as being overwhelmingly needy for some; however, you cannot object to the fact that Buffy was also responsible for how it turned out. Also, another reason why I tend to stand up more for Riley (even though I love Buffy to death) is that it seemed to me like he made actual efforts to fit what Buffy required him to be. At least for a good while. With Buff, though, it did not seem to be the case. At least, from what we saw on screen. She has always been a very individualistic woman - and that is also part of why I find her attractive -, which does not really work out with a guy like Riley, who definitely needed a woman more like Sam. A companion that reciprocated his strong love for her.

Anyway, I understand why you have reacted that way after reading what I said. It was not only her behavior which led to their relationship' closure. I should have said that she lost her chance at a *normal* relationship with a good-natured, average American guy.

I meant to reply to this the other day but I got a bit too caught up partying at my mates wedding! No offense taken at all. We all have our own take on the show and the characters. I think I need to make my position on Riley a bit more distinct than the general position of the fandom riff raff 😛.

I quite like Riley for the most part. He's not going to make it to my favourite characters list but he's often funny and generally a nice guy. I think he handled his military world falling apart reasonable well considering everything involved.

However I think he was a complete ass for almost the entire run of Season 5. He got it into his mind that Buffy didn't love him and then went about picking holes in their relationship. He was getting himself all hurt that Buffy didn't cry enough in front of him or that she wasn't prioritising him while her mum was dying and her sister being hunted. If he decided that he didn't love Buffy anymore or that she wasn't being good enough for him then he either needed to break up with her or suck it up and be there for her while her mum was sick and see if it improved afterwards. Not mope about feeling sorry for himself, hook up with some vampires and then skip town and blame Buffy for it all on the way out.

Spike, of course, he is her equal, he loves her, has proven over and over that he will always be there for her (and for those she loves - Dawn), they know the better and the worse of each other, they know each other, they are in love with each other right now - and, let's be honest, if they still are together after all those years... they do belong together.

She'll grow old, and he will be at her side till the end! 😀

I totally agree, and may I add that Buffy will never give up being a slayer, she thinks she wants "normal" but only because the grass always looks greener, she and faith will always choose to be "hot chicks with super powers'. Spike is the only guy in the universe that will let buffy be buffy and be content to be her partner without asking anything of her. All Spike wants is to fight shoulder to shoulder, all Buffy wants is someone she loves at her side. Looks like a good working, long term relationship to me. I don't see fat grandchildren but that is not the only path to happiness in the world.

Having said that, I strongly feel that, if such a time actually does come, Buffy will settle down in her white picket fence surrounded cottage with someone totally human, someone capable of giving her children and a relatively happy life (too happy, and she would become bored quickly) someone with whom she can grow old and watch their children grow.

You don't think she could end up with vampire Spike?
 

And the mortal/immortal dilemma would be solved: Buffy dies young, happy, doing what she was made to do, saving the world one more time... and having Spike by her side, of course.
 


I think Batman is more a person who help the helpless. He is like Angel. I'm not into Batman, either...

As of Season 10, she's already happy with vampire Spike. As for the white cottage, picket fence, and children scenario, well, Spike could make another trip to Africa, or maybe they both could go, and undergo some sort of trials to have Spike regain his mortality...

See, as a fan of them together, my instinct is to just come out and say Spike, but that's just me selfishly projecting my ideals on Buffy. Whilst I love the idea of them living happily ever after, Buffy wouldn't be Buffy without the trials and tribulations in her life, moulding and shaping her into the woman she became.

We know she has dreams of the life she could have had without her calling, but I could never imagine Mrs Buffy XXX, wife of Mr XXX, mother of YYY, soccer mom, homebaker, living in a cottage with with a white picket fence. Not that that scenario is a bad one by any stretch of the imagination, but it just doesn't suit her.

I mean, can you imagine her taking Buffy Jnr to the graveyard to dust a couple of vamps? The social workers would have a field day.....!

Does Buffy need to settle down with anyone? No. Does she want to? Yes, I believe so. Buffy has never been the type to enjoy being single. She wants to find lasting love. She has that - has always had that - with Spike. Let's hope it works out.

Also, choosing to spend your life with one person isn't always "settling", and it certainly doesn't mean she would be defined by her man. Spike is her equal, they are partners. If in the end she chose Spike, it'd be because she feels she's a better person with him in her life.

...assuming he'd have her, of course.

If I had the opportunity to chose how the story ends, I'd like Buffy to go out in one last blaze of glory, saving the world one last time, with Spike by her side.
