Who do you think is the best friend Angel has had?

I don't necessarily mean romantically (although that could play into it I suppose). Angel doesn't have a ton of friends, but the ones he does have have always struck me as true friends. So, who is his best friend?

He has different dynamics with almost all of his friends. His friendship with Spike (and by the end of S5 it is a friendship) is clearly different than what he has with Wesley, which is unique from what he had with Doyle. His friendships, and romantic relationships, with Buffy and Cordelia are very different from one another.

Maybe some of his other friendships were more complex or had a bigger impact on him or whatever, but I really liked their friendship, and the romance also.

I liked the way that it seemd like he was really comfortable around her, and like they just understood eachother really well. But, I think what I liked most about their relationship is the way she could make him smile. It lit up his whole face when he smiled at her.

Ai, thast's why they never ever talk about anything but Buffy or their personal rivalries. Honestly, friend is a notion lost on our current generation. No offense meant.

Cordelia Chase. She's the one who has been with him the longest and has shared the most with him. They balance each other out - she keeps him grounded and he brings out the good in her. They genuinely enjoy being in each other's company and they grow to understand each other better than any of the others do.

I always loved Cordy and Angel's friendship and I didn't like when the decision was made to make it romantic. I felt the romance was forced upon the viewers and wasn't allowed to unfold naturally. Then they messed everything up in Season 4 and that just drove the final nail into the coffin.

Definitely Cordy. Although they were both looking for more out of it, their friendship was too strong for it to happen (that and Angel was sunk to the bottom of the ocean and Cordy became a higher power).

I think evey characters from his show was a great friend at one time or another. But in the end I think Cordy was his best friend. Despite their love, they never hesitated to put their feelings aside to help others.

I can't believe that all these folks have missed an answer as obvious as the nose on Jimmy Durante's face. Without a shadow of a doubt, the best friend that Angel has ever had is Cordelia.

Cordelia the dragon, that is.

Surely I'm not the only one to notice the bond between blood sucking vampire and fire breathing dragon. It was, literally, a match made in hell.

In a very strange way, when you think about it, Angel has been more blessed with truly amazing friendships than anyone else in the verse.

The scene in "the ring" when he shoots that guys hand with a cross bow and stares him dead in the eyes and says "my employer is very important to me"

The way he impersonates angel - even going so far as to drink blood

And the whole Connor arc....say what u will but I firmly believe that he did what he did for angel. He could not let angel suffer the torment of living with knowing he had killed his son. Yes, he went about it the wrong way but I believe loyalty and love for angel were his prime motivations. And he spent the whole summer searching the bottom of the ocean for him. Even though he was cast out by all his friends.

In a very strange way, when you think about it, Angel has been more blessed with truly amazing friendships than anyone else in the verse.

Yeah, but being his friend, or even just close associates with him, gets to be downright fatal. Doyle, Wes, Cordy, Fred, they are all unquestionably true friends, and they wind up dead eventually. Even Gunn, who always contended that his association with Angel was purely related to the business of dusting vampires, wound up dead. So far, he's the only one who managed to come back after he died, if you don't count Illyria as being part Fred. Even people like Lila, Lindsey, (neither one really friends, but both of whom have operated on a more or less friendly basis on several occasions, and Darla have managed to die either directly or indirectly because of him. Add to that Buffy, who has died twice, not directly his fault, granted, but she still enjoyed a close association with him, and Kendra, who would almost certainly not have died the way that she did if it weren't for him and the trouble that he caused in Season 2 not to mention you-know-who in Season 8, and probably others whose names escape me at the moment.

Death is far more Angel's gift than it ever was Buffy's. My advice to Faith would be to either boot the him out at the soonest chance or not to take out any long term magazine subscriptions

Very true. If Doyle had gotten to stick around for a while longer, I think he would have been my choice. But since he died so soon, I chose Cordelia.

I went with Cordy, although Doyle was a close second. While I think he & Wesley were very close, theirs was a complex relationship and Doyle seemed like he would also have turned into a "drinking buddy" type friend as well as partner. Angel told him the while story after IWRY, something he didn't do with Cordy.

As I said, "Death is your gift," could be seen as a universal statement applicable to all Slayers, Champion, heroes, and rogue demon hunters in the Buffyverse. And yet, ironically. all of these superhuman characters seem to thrive on the comfort and support that their friends provide them. And we have been shown on countless occasions that it is the presence of that very friendship that seemed to make Buffy, Angel, Spike, and even Faith. if you consider her relationships with the two major influences in her life, Wilkins and Angel, stronger, more dedicated fighters.

And yet, ironically. all of these superhuman characters seem to thrive on the comfort and support that their friends provide them. And we have been shown on countless occasions that it is the presence of that very friendship that seemed to make Buffy, Angel, Spike, and even Faith. if you consider her relationships with the two major influences in her life, Wilkins and Angel, stronger, more dedicated fighters.

It's the most basic, simple and universal bond any soldier can have: you don't necessarily fight for the cause, you fight for each other. Angel and his gang were more into the cause than I think Buffy et al, were. I think in that respect the Fang Gang handled defeat and tragedy better, there was nothing that one member of the Fang Gang did that wasn't eventually forgiven by the rest. Buffy and the Scoobies weren't like that, grudges were held onto, still are. But they are still each other's reason to fight.

I went with Doyle because I feel like they could relate to each other more & like someone else said, Doyle laid down his life for Angel.
