Who do you think is the best friend Angel has had?

i said Lorne. Lorne was Angels number 1 spiritual adviser,he would guide Angel onto the right path again and again. For part of season 2 he was Angels only friend,and didn't judge him but tried always to help him onto the "right" course. Lorne stayed loyal even to the end,even when it went against all of Lorne's gentle,sweet nature,when he did one last favor for Angel,killing Lindsey. That broke Lorne's heart,but he did it anway,because Lorne may have lost faith in the mission but he always loved his friend. So i think Cordy and Wesley and Doyle and Fred,and even Gunn, despite his "vampire" issues, were amazing friends to Angel,but i think the gentle green demon with a voice of pure bliss was his best friend and his most loyal friend.

I said Doyle, it was really a toss up between Doyle and Cordy, but I gave it to Doyle based on the fact that I believe he would have been Angel's number one had he survived passed Hero. I mean, he's the first friend Angel is shown making on his own after getting his soul, or at least his first true friend (I don't count Buffy because she was always a romantic interest, and Angel wasn't really close to anyone on the cast of Buffy). I think he's probably the guy Angel would have trusted most, and they both genuinely cared for each other.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. When shit really hits the fan it's Willow who curses Angelus into submission, no questions asked, no strings attached, free of charge. They are not that close or anything but the way I see it, Willow's a true friend.

This was a tough one.

I chose Wesley. I would have chosen Doyle. If he hadn't been killed off, I think him and Angel could have been life-long friends.

I chose Wesley because, contrary to what he did, I think his heart was always in the right place. He "got" Angel, and never judged him. They made a great team. It's too bad that Wesley's misguided actions had to tear them apart. I know Angel eventually forgave Wesley, but their relationship was never the same.

I'm also unclear as to why Spike isn't an option? Spike is and has always been Angel's friend. They have a long history together, and despite their odds with each other, it's clear they really care about each other.

I would say Angel are Spike are family. They've never been friends. They don't like each other at all, but they clearly care about one another. Though, I think they would both rather drink Holy Water than admit that!

As much as Buffy and Angel were in love, I don't think they were ever friends and I think both parties would admit this. At least Buffy did.

Doyle's a contender, but may lose out due the brevity of their interaction relative to the other people in Angel's life. However some may argue that significance of their interaction is more important than his tenure on the show.

Wesley's a difficult one, because the two have had a strained relationship. Whilst Angel considered Wesley a close friend, they didn't seem to be bonding a close level,(remember how he alienated Wes by more or less ignoring his gut wound and focusing on Cordy just because she said they're not friends) until just before Wes abducted Connor and after that, things have never really been the same.

A few people have mentioned Lorne, but sometimes Angel treated him terribly. On some occasions, he treated him like a "mystical vending machine" at least on one occasion he more or less bullied Lorne into helping him and showed a lack of concern when he was hurt. He also on occasion treated him as a lackey or a butler.

Yes. I think that what Angel asked of Lorne in Not Fade Away was pretty dang low. Despicable even. And this is coming from someone who loves Angel as a character.

Okay,but "who is the best friend Angel has had?" and "Who did Angel love the most?" are two entirely distinct questions. One is asking who was there for him,who did the most for him,who loved Angel the most. The other is asking who Angel loved above all else. So, to answer the question that was actually posed,I still say his best friend(the person who did the most for him) is Lorne. However, Doyle,Wesley,Cordy, and Gunn all did a lot for him so I might be wrong. But,my real point is that the question seems to be who was the person who loved Angel the most and did the most for him,so that is what we should be answering. So, my answer is still Lorne because even when he didn't agree with or even understand Angel he was still loyal to him even to the point of following Angel's orders to kill Lindsey. Even though it broke Lorne's heart to do it,but he believed in Angel as his leader. He knew no matter how wrong Angel might be at particular times,that in the bigger picture he was ultimately right. 🙂

My answer would be from the end of the TV series, someone who Angel had known the longest, despite his not being the best of friends most of the time, they could sit and have a chat about poetry or Barry Manilow. Admittedly they did have a running dispute for 40 minutes one day about who would win a stand up fight, a caveman or an astronaut (I did wonder about that, what if the astronaut had been an Irishman?)
Anyway I'd go for Spike.
One who isn't on the list, and would have been a major contender since Angel first saw Buffy would be his hairdresser.

There is no question in my mind it is Coredelia. Maybe not right in the beginning but she certainly becomes the best friend he ever had. Even keeping their romantic feelings out of it she was always there for him and always on his side except for the whole pregnancy thing with Darla. They were just so tight no matter what and we can't even say that about him and Buffy.

I really enjoyed seeing Cordelia and Angel becoming closer friends from Season 1 to 3. They get the best out of each other.

Unfortunately more characters were introduced in Angel and they just didn't have enough time to invest on the main characters anymore. It's how it felt like to me on Season 3.

It is very clear in my mind that Angel's closest friend over the years was Cordelia. I don't think I have anything sustentative to say about their friendship that hasn't already been said on this thread, so I will just reiterate these points by saying that the friendship formed between the two of them was incredibly strong and founded on a basis of genuine regard for one another, and it was a joy to watch their relationship evolve and the dynamic between the two of them develop.

I've gotta go with Cordy for this one. Birthday is probably an episode that highlights this fact the most. Due to not meeting Cordelia in LA, he becomes incredibly withdrawn after Doyle's death, and with him inheriting the visions, he becomes a complete recluse. They were able to support each other through the grief of losing Doyle, and asides from just after Angel rejoined Angel Investigations, she's been there for him. However, it was justified. After all, he'd pushed her aside when she was trying to help him. Sure, he was trying to avoid them getting hurt as a result of his dark side, but she didn't know this.

First I was going to go with Doyle. Then Cordelia. And it certainly was Cordelia for a long time, she grounded him and gave him perspective for pretty much three years.
They loved each other like true friends.

But, well, Angel tried to destroy the world recently and the only person who was in his corner was Faith. Their friendship in Angel & Faith is really something, very co-dependant andits going to be interesting to see where it goes.

As for the mortality rate of Angel's friends- Faith's pretty tough.

Sometimes someone shows how much they care for you by opposing you, or being angry with you. Friendship isn't always about staying by your side unconditionally. It all depends. But I haven't read Angel & Faith comics yet so I admit I don't know the details.

I went with Cordelia, but in a way I can't make sense of the question. In my life there are certainly differences between a good friend and an acquaintance. But my good friends all show their love for me in very different ways. They are impossible to compare in an "apples to apples" kind of way. I wouldn't be able to choose my favorite and I wouldn't be interested in trying. And that's how I feel about Angel's friends.

But I chose Cordelia anyway. I guess it's because their friendship has evolved and matured the most, from beginning to end.

chasesummers agrees: True about Faith, shes always there for Angel but also at that time Cordelia was a little busy being taken over by Jasmin and all. It was nice seeing Cordelia coming back for Angel on ''After The Fall''.

Oh, no doubt that Cordy is still watching over Angel from some higher plane (probably with Doyle...🙂 ), calling him an idiot for the whole Twilight-thing, and grateful that somebody was there to look after his, somewhat, broken mind.
In think in that regard its like the passing of a torch- from Doyle to Cordelia to Faith. That's how I see it anyway. 🙂

And the whole Connor arc....say what u will but I firmly believe that he did what he did for angel. He could not let angel suffer the torment of living with knowing he had killed his son. Yes, he went about it the wrong way but I believe loyalty and love for angel were his prime motivations. And he spent the whole summer searching the bottom of the ocean for him. Even though he was cast out by all his friends.

I agree. I picked Wesley too. He has proved his loyalty and care for Angel over and over again. I never cared for Angel and Cordelia so romance aside, I could see how they are best friends, but season 4 just ruins Cordelia for me. Also, what Faith and Angel have is a nice friendship too. They get each other.

Later on, there was always that romance factor between Angel and Cordy. Doyle was Angel's best bud, even if it was (sadly) short lived. If he didn't die, he and Angel would have had a great friendship. Those two would always come to each other's aid.

Remember The Bachelor Party, how angry Angel was when realizing Doyle's life was threatened? Not to say Angel wouldn't do the same for any of his other friends, but that was a true bro moment.

As others have said, Doyle cared enough about Angel to lay his life down for him and the cause.

And finally, we all saw how distraught Angel was after Doyle's death if Cordy didn't show up. I think that speaks volumes about Angel's friendship with both of them however.

Whether or not he deserves it is up for debate, but Angel has actually been really blessed with some incredible friends. The kind of friends that many people never have the opportunity to have. Unfortunately, Angel is not a good friend, hence the reason why his friendships don't work out.

All those listed in this list have been good friends to him, and he's basically screwed over each of them in that special Angel-way of his.

Take Lorne, for instance. Lorne was a good friend to Angel. He supported him and his mission, while maintaining his own boundaries. He loved Angel and everything he stood for. What did Angel do?

He gave him a mission, Lorne believed enough in the mission enough to do it. He wasn't forced to do it.

What would have happened if Lorne said no? It's not like Angel would have killed him for not doing it.
