I'm talkin' big, season finale baddies here, not Warren, or even Spike. The ones that posed World ending threats. Personally, I still think The First Evil kicks ass. It was cunning, manipulative, and just all around evil, and loved being just that.
 
I'm tied between Angel and Glory, they were the ones who got "portal opened" close to ruining the world. Willow comes in at a close third. Characters who in the end actually did something, even if (in Glory's case) it took her a while to get there.

The Master, Adam and The First were mostly talk. They were the threat in and off themselves, which made them rather world-endingly-weak.
The Mayor was, granted a true demon, but just one giant snake, so his threat was centralized to his being, also making him world-ending-weak
 
Best? The Mayor. Founder of Sunnydale and had a decent, subtle and relatively complex arc in terms of plot.

But the 'biggest and Baddest' was clearly shown to be Glory. Glory outmatched Buffy in a way no other opponent did before or since; she literally threw her all over the place and Buffy couldn't stop her.
Buffy eventually stopped every other opponent singlehandedly but with Glory she needed everyone else pitching in; Magic!Willow, the Buffybot, a couple of cool MacGuffin's that had been introduced many episodes before and Giles crossing that that and murdering Ben.
 
I still say the worst Big Bad they had to fight was in S6 and that being life. Life, as a Big Bad, was worse than even the First. At least you could stop and slow down the First. With Life being the Big Bad you had nowhere to run to, no weapon could stop it. It was (unless you died) indestructible and inescapable. Life was the worst foe they ever fought. Certainly did the most damage!

Well, with the First she never would've stood a chance, if they haven't found the Scythe. Even then, she needed all the potentials, plus Angel's weird necklace, and a last minute sacrifice from Spike. I guess the biggest difference is, that she didn't have to die to save the world that time, but a lot of others did.

The First couldn't do anything but talk. I think you mean Caleb.
And Buffy wouldn't have stood a chance against Glory without The Troll Hammer AND the Dagon sphere. The difference is those two were weaved into the narrative of the season up to that point, not a plot device found at the last minute.
The scythe is just another version of the 'super-slayer' spell in S4. Something to make-do when it came to holes in the plot. Sure, it looked cool but it's really just something to justify why Buffy can suddenly go toe-to-toe with Caleb when she couldn't before; no real reason given.

Buffy only 'needed' Willow's empowerment spell and Angel's amulet. That's all. She could've taken Spike's place and sacrificed herself.
I never considered The First's army a 'big bad', just part of the plot that needed defeating.
 
Even though I don't really like Glory, I think she posses the most threat.
 
I think Glory would but I chose Angel because Buffy actually loved him so it would be harder defeat someone you love rather than someone you hate

The scythe did to a degree as, if I remember correctly, it was first shown in the Fray comic as the weapon of the slayer and then it was kinda a WTF moment when you later saw it on the show in the slab. At least as my memory goes, but that was a long time ago. Am fairly certain it was in the comic before the show.
 
It's gotta be Angelus, for me. He was the one big bad that I actually feared Buffy might not be able to defeat because she was in love him. He had power over her that no other big bad on the show ever did. So he posed a pretty big threat.
Strength wise- gotta give it to Glory though, she slung Buffy around like a rag doll.
 
I was between the master and Glory because they both killed Buffy. Glory was a better death so she gets my vote.

I wouldn't even go as far as saying he died in battle against her. Glory was defeated. If anyone is responsible for Buffy's death it would be Spike.

I take your point, but if your major universe saving- plot-reveal is foreshadowed in entirely different medium, maybe you're being a bit too clever as a writer. Or maybe not clever enough.
One of them for sure.

Understand completely. And that's the problem I current have with the Marvel universe. (but it was cool AF seeing the scythe and knowing what it was!)
