Who Got the Scythe?

For some reason I have the inkling that she may have kept it herself. I just personally can't see her passing it to someone else (given that could be partly because I think it suits her overly well 😉). I think there's definitely a possibility that she would keep it for herself, but not nessesarily use it. It was really what ended the last apocalypse (oh my I lost my spelling!) that they fought in Sunnydale, as well as was the root of the end of that part of her life. Given that, I could see her keeping it for sentimental reasons, as a kind of symbol of all she went through in Sunnydale, her growth, her sacrifices, and maybe most importantly so that she could put that part of her life to peace (if that's indeed what she would want to do). Get some closure on being the one and only slayer, but never forget or deny it.

I don't think Buffy would keep the scythe after Sunnydale. As a "traditional Slayer weapon" it should be made available to the Slayer, WHICHEVER Slayer, who needs it the most. If, as seems to be the general consensus, Faith takes a team to Cleveland to guard the hellmouth there, she may be the logical new wielder. At the end of Chosen, someone stated (I think Faith), that now Buffy could start living "like a normal girl," which is really what I always assumed she was doing in Rome. After seven plus years as the Chosen One, she would want to take some time off, maybe go back to school, feed pigeons, and in general take some time off for herself and Dawn (I don't even want to think about just why Andrew's there with her).

faith defintily showed great interst in the scythe, and Buffy did want to rest, so she probably passed it on to faith, i dont think Faith would go back to prison, she started her redemtion with prison, but she saved the world, she prolly thinks she no longer needs to repent. either that, or Giles has it, to treasure it, keep it safe, you know?

I agree about Faith picking up the reins from Buffy, at least on a temporary basis, and given her friendship with Angel and his new relationship with Wolfram and Hart, her escaped prisoner status has probably been eliminated as well, so her inheriting the scythe is simply the mext logical step.

I think Buffy would keep it. Buffy didn't like other people messing with her stuff. It's a constant of her character. We saw what happened to Sunday when she fooled with Buffy's umbrella trophy.

Well wait, though, Buffy herself said it wasnt even hers, it belonged to the slayer, and in her case there was more than one, even she told Faith she didnt even know who actually was supposed to own it. you know?

There ain't no way Buffy is giving up the Shiny Axe.
Buffy will always be part of the fight, she knows that. She may take a vacation from it, but in her heart and soul she knows as long as there is darkness in the world, she will use her power, herr strength to fight it.
And as she does this, she will never settle for anything less than leader.

I think Buffy kept it as she was in charge or she would have handed it over to Giles for safe keeping.

Lol...yeah, and the Scythe is so much more fun to play with 😛

I think it would have stayed with Buffy. We know throughout Angel Season 5 when they mention either the Watchers or Slayers that orders are coming from Buffy. So that suggests that Buffy is still in charge of things. So it would make sence that she still has the Scythe.

Saying that though, I would actually like Faith to have it. I think she deserves the chance to feel like The Slayer, even if it is a mute point now that there are loads of slayers. It would have been a nice gesture of Buffy's to pass the Scythe to Faith.

I vote Buffy.. or Giles... as BoTD said.. i dont think buffy would be willing to give up that axe.. she pulled it from the rock.. she should keep it.. otherwise Giles should have it.. because.... *thinks* its Giles.. and hes smart like that :silly:

I disagree. Season 7 is about sharing power. The scythe is a symbol of the slayers power. Buffy keeping the scythe kinda smacks of "we're all equal, I'm just more equal than you".

I also think some of you don't take into account the fact that for large parts of Buffys slayer life she just wanted to be a normal girl.

She can have that. I think she'd pass on that scythe quicker than you can say "God gave rock n roll to you". 🙂

I disagree. Buffy may have shared her power but she didn't share her leadership. We saw Faith briefly take charge in season 7 but as soon as Buffy came back, Buffy took over.

I think for all Buffy says she wants to give up Slaying and be a normanl girl, I don't think its in her nature.

Plus, she's still giving orders through the Watcher's Council in Season 5 of Angel. So, she's obviously still in charge.

Plus Joss is writing the Season 8 comic in which I assume Buffy will still slay.
Come to think of it...yeah...there's a Season 8 comic book series coming out in, I think it's March, that will be canon. We might actually find out what happened to the scythe.

Anybody wanna make a bet? 😀

Maybe your memory of season 7 is a little fractured. Buffy learns to share her power after the leadership squabble.
Allow me to introduce you to this ingenious storytelling trick, we, in the know, like to call it.... character development. Sounds kooky, right? I assure you its the mainstay of most stories. Here's the deal, you take a character, give them some flaws, progress them through the story, and at the end..tada, you fix their flaws! Sounds simple, huh?

Leaders, generals, those in command aren't prone to field combat. If they die, the troops have no one to lead them.

Maybe, although I personally think Season 8 will prove this statement incorrect. Even if it doesn't though. Didn't you also say this.

Even if her role is strictly non-combattant does that qualify as "a normal girl"?

She'd still be General of the slay-game, and who better to safeguard the slayer's most powerful weapon than the general?

The boys visit to Rome suggests Buffy is living a more normal life. If you have a weapon that can hurt your enemies, you don't lock it up and admire its shineyness, you put it to use.

I was wondering about that, you know. Did you get the impression the scythe was a tool for everyday slayer usage? I know Fray used it that way, and buffy did for a short period at least, but would that have been the exception, or the rule. For some reason I got the impression the scythe was a special tool to be used in special circumstances, like killing the last pure demon, or fighting the battle to close the Hellmouth.

If it turns out it's put away for safe keeping in Season 8 it won't surprise me, but it will disappoint me. It's a pretty cool tool.

Exactly what I was just thinking N4H. That it was too valuable a tool for everyday use and that great measures had to be taken to ensure it's safety. Hence it's dormancy until S7. It was a sacrafice, to be without it everyday in order to ensure it's availability in times of great need.

With that being said, I would think the responsibility would fall onto Buffy's shoulders (self-appointed, not likely! Notice how everyone likes her to shoulder the responsibility for these major decisions?) to ensure it's safety and she (with Giles' help) had it put away somewhere VERY safe.

I always assumed Buffy would keep and use it until she was dead, and then it would pass to Faith. Anyway I hope Buffy keeps it, I want to see her slaying stuff with it in season eight. It will be interesting to see if it can be used for any thing else, other magics etc.
