I love Angel - he's half of my ship. I love Angelus, he's part of Angel, always there and always aware (Orpheus) - as well as - well, half my ship.😀

I always thought that the perfect moment of happiness was just Angel - and that moment came when he woke with Buffy, asleep in his arms, completely vulnerable and trusting him. But I read something that made me wonder if losing the soul was a part of Angelus perfect happiness at having Buffy asleep in his arms, completely vulnerable and trusting him.

I couldn't take my eyes off them. I was only in it for the evil. It was everything to me. It was art. The destruction of a human being
.

Dru knows Angel(us) better than anyone - knows he wants to do to Buffy what he did to her, because Buffy made him feel human. Angel is tortured by guilt for what he did. Angelus is a captive inside him at all times.

Did he/they wake with Buffy in his arms, and just for a second feel the demon stir, feel the demon's moment of perfect joy?

So, Angel? Angelus? Both?

Really interesting theory! I really wish they'd have explored that side of Angel more with the demon still being in there. I mean, we were shown that Angel does not need to lose his soul to become Angelus, I could see how even deep down, there was a small part of the vampire that wished nothing more but to escape in that moment.

Angel was created by the curse - but it was the demon that was cursed. It makes sense to me that it was the opportunity the demon saw that broke the curse.

It really flips my lens - a second of thought by the demon of what he could do to Buffy - a second of pure joy in the demon - then Angel, horrified and trying to maintain control, knowing clearly what the demon wants, but the demon has already been strengthened enough to take over and make the soul go away.

And yet in "The Dark Age 2x08", Angel seems to be perfectly happy with the idea that he had a demon in him spoiling for a fight and forced Eyghon to fight Angelus:

BUFFY
You knew that if the demon was in
danger it would jump into the nearest
dead guy.

Willow nods, even smiles.

ANGEL
I put it in danger.

WILLOW
And it jumped.

ANGEL
But I've had a demon inside me for a
couple hundred years just waiting for
a good fight.

BUFFY
Winner and still champion.

No one else seems to be concerned about this as this point. The demon is there, Jenny knows more than she is telling and the situation is being set up for loss of soul. When Angel is subjected to his moment of perfect happiness, he appears to fight the effect but is not successful.

Angel was as he said week. In Amends he said that it not the demon in him that needs killing it the man.
When he woke up holding Buffy in his arms I bet he thought she looked so helplesss & able to do anything
both of them were happy & that all Angelus needed to get out. As further proof when he had sex with Darla
he didn't feel like that afterwards so that why he didn't lose his soul.

I completely agree - but what Angel is fighting is the resurgence of Angelus, right.

Angel didn't exist when the curse was formed. The demon was cursed and the curse already had the happiness clause before Angel was created. In fact, Angel had no knowledge of the clause, and Jenny wasn't told until it was too late.

Just a different way of looking at it, really. Either way, the same thing happens.

he didn't feel like that afterwards so that why he didn't lose his soul.

Ah, but the demon had slept with Darla, and it knew she wasn't vulnerable the way Buffy was. Looking at how much Angelus wanted to torture Buffy, how he preyed on her vulnerabilities - could the demon have woken one second before Angel and experienced a moment of perfect happiness?

He wakes - seems dazed - then sits up and puts on clothes - maybe trying to put the demon back? But the process has clearly already started. All that remains the same - I'm just speculating on that one moment of perfect happiness, and what part of Angel(us) had it.

I agree with you on that . Plus Angel was happy at finally being with Buffy so sex wasn't the point but being happy that she gave her self to him.
With Darla there was just mutual pleasure not joy at getting her like with Buffy I think.
