The characters I can think of who had the most tension between them:

Buffy/Spike - duh lol, enemies turned lovers
Giles/Willow - seemed to start in season 4?
Cordelia/Xander - classic case of sexual tension
Spike/Harmony - ill-fated couple
Anya/Xander - ditto but adorable when they were on

Interested to know what people come up with.

Buffy and Cordelia pretty much only got along when things were very serious -- evil afoot, imminent danger, big emotional life stuff happening, etc. When push comes to shove they care about one another but they tend to butt heads in all other instances.

Xander and Angel pretty much hate each other.

Angel and Spike, they basically hated each other off and on from BtVS S2 through AtS S5. Some of their feuds were pure comedy gold, especially in AtS S5.

If I recall, Willow and Faith had a bit, although that was mostly on Willows end due to jealousy over Faith and Xander, and Faith joining sides with the mayor.

Angel and Wesley is the most obvious one. Starting from when Angel tries to smother Wesley in S3 through S4 and even in S5 when he's wiped Wesley memories, he tells Wesley not to use his people, the inference being Wes is not part of that team.

Another is Willow and Buffy with the real life dislike blending into it

Cordie and Xander, after Lover's Walk. "Hell hath no Fury like a woman scorned."

Wait, where did Xander get the money for that dress? Do vampires drop coins after you kill them? That would explain a lot.

Xander and Angel pretty much hate each other.
I think that "hate" you speak of was only one way (Xander didn't like Angel), and even that was mainly related to Xander being jealous. Angel never felt any way toward Xander. Barely ever mentioned him. 🤣

I agree with Angel/Spike. Although, hate might be a strong term. I think they just had a rivalry.

Willow also disliked Faith because she came in and 'took' her spot with Buffy. She kind of replaced Willow for a while there, as Buffy had more in common with Faith.

I don't agree with this. Angel and Wesley had a good relationship. Angel forgave Wesley for the Connor stuff pretty quickly all things considered, and he admitted in S5 that he respected Wes because the latter was always able to make the hard decisions. I think they had a brother-ish relationship.

As for OP, as far as animosity is concerned, it would be Buffy/Faith, Buffy/Forrest, Angel/Spike (already mentioned), Angel/Lilah, Angel/Lindsey, Giles/Spike, Riley/Spike, Xander/Cordy, and Willow/Anya. Those are the ones I can think of.

That's minor compared to the 2 actors hatred of each other. Just before S3 during a press tour they got into a fight that had to be broken up by Joshua Jackson. DB put his dislike aside during S3 as he was leaving for his spin off.

No he didn't though. He does meet up with Wesley in S4 but it was just a front to find out any information on Cordy disappearance. Which Wesley saw through.
While in S5 he was worried if Wes would betray him again and when Wes did get his memories back he lied about a weapon to kill Ilyria
It was never a brother relationship. Wes was Angel's underling until he finally stood up for himself

Angel goes out of his way to be a dick to Xander on multiple occasions, and tells Buffy he's jealous of him.

Xander's offenses towards Angel are worse, but Angel definitely doesn't like Xander.

i saw them as two princesses who both wanted to be queen bee. xander and spike hated each other for sure. xander never seemed to get along with anybody buffy loved

Well, that was a grand total of one person, Angel. Both Riley and Spike acknowledged that she did not love them. And Xander got along okay with Riley in S5 and oddly okay with Spike in the same season.

Xander's main issues with Angel was he was a vampire who, just like Xander expected, turned on them, and with Spike was that he was also a vampire, who repeatedly tried to kill them (and never provided any useful help for that matter).

Buffy recognizes in Cordelia what she sees as the worst of her former self; multiple times she implies that had she not been called to be Slayer she might essentially be Cordelia. So it's easy to see why Buffy clashes with her, especially early on before Cordelia started to soften a bit around the edges.

Whereas Cordelia, despite often being incredibly self centered and shallow, admits that she admires and envies Buffy being, essentially, a superhero. To Cordelia, being the popular queen bee prom queen figure is a consolation prize because she cannot actually do the things Buffy can do. So she resents when she feels Buffy is encroaching on her territory, because in her mind Buffy already has the gold medal and is offended that Buffy also wants the silver medal, so to speak. Cordelia is used to succeeding -- she does well academically, she's very athletic, she's beautiful, she's rich. But despite all of her advantages and assets, she will never be able to do certain things that Buffy can do.

We weren't talking about the actors, though. We were talking about Xander and Angel. I stand by what I said.

As for Wesley and Angel, you selectively picked two scenes out of an army of them throughout S4 and S5. There's a lot more in there. I also stand by what I said concerning Wesley and Angel having a brotherly vibe from S1 and on, with Wesley being the younger brother looking up to his older brother (Angel).

Angel goes out of his way to be a dick to Xander on multiple occasions, and tells Buffy he's jealous of him.

Angel was jealous of Xander as far as him being able to hang around Buffy in the sun. He was jealous of his humanity. He wasn't jealous of him as a threat romantically. Xander was a kid for him.

I don't think Angel thought very much about Xander one way or another.

Angel might've been a dick to Xander a few times but Xander wished for Angel's death and did his best to engineer it on several occasions. That's not an antagonistic relationship, that's antagonism one way and murderous intent the other. It's just that, by mid S3 Xander just...stops trying? I guess he's well over his murderous petty jealousy by that point.
Although Angel one-hitting him unconscious with a 'that guy just bugs me' is just enough payback I guess.

Most animosity:
early S2 Xander/Cordelia
Buffy and Faith (when they weren't punching each other).
Spike/Buffy but only for S4. After S4 Buffy just ignores him for half a season.
Giles/Wesley
AtS S4 Gunn/Wesley.

Eh, Angel and Xander seemed to get along in The One With the Indian who turned into a Bear "Pangs," which is their last encounter. I see them as rivals, not adversaries, and I assume X would have the same type of relationship he eventually had with Spike.

Angel and Xander

Wesley and Giles

Willow and Faith

Buffy and Faith
