Irate Marylander shoots his roommates' console, but the 9mm round fails to penetrate its casing.

When called to investigate a shooting last Friday night, police in Anne Arundel County, Maryland found an unlikely culprit--an Xbox.

The Baltimore Sun reports that 34-year old Robert Preston Kersey had grown enraged by his roommates constantly playing their Xbox at high volume. According to the police report, Kersey emerged from his bedroom at 2 a.m. brandishing an automatic pistol. Rather than shoot his roommates, Kersey took aim at the offending Xbox and fired a single shot at the console. While the bullet's impact disabled the Xbox, its thick plastic casing deflected the 9mm round, which ricocheted away harmlessly.

Other than the Xbox, no injuries resulted from the incident. Kersey was later booked on two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of destruction of property.

Not only is an Xbox good for playing games... keeping relationships, etc.

But you can also watch Buffy on it!!!

That's our main usage. I watch Buffy on it.

My boyfriend and I also play games together... the easy ones that I can play. We have been having Halo 2 tournaments lately, but I'm not so good at that game.

I liked to play the Sims on Xbox. But then something mysteriously happened to it. It got up and walked away. Can't find it.

Yes I've finished Fable twice, once playing as a good guy, once as evil. It's really an incredible game. However, it did not live up to the hype that MS and it's developers (was it EA?) fed us for the last 2 years. Seriously, that's how long I was waiting anxiously for this game.

I'd say great game...worth picking up used fir 29.99 or so .... heck it's probably even worth the full price. It's just not what I expected. If you want a truly open-ended RPG..I'd go with Morrowind. That game rocks.

Mr. P, thank you for that link. I just recently purchased a second Xbox about a month ago.....will have to check into it!!

Wesley's Sylyna - I buy alot of my games used at EB Games, I got Morrowind Game of the Year edition there for 19.99. But thanks for the tip!
 
I've had my Xbox for about 3.5 years and Halo2 is the best bloody game out there.

For my lovely black bit of plastic i have
Halo 1 and 2
KOTOR 1 and2
Splinter Cell 1 and 2
Fable (Disappointed by the ending and not being able to continue on with guilt quests)
Both Buffy1 and 2 (#1 IS wayyyy better)
A load of FIFA and Tony Hawks etc.
 
It's only for xboxs that where made in 1997 or older if I remember right, I saw it on the news last night so that I made sure I didn't have to return mine.

Evidently the older models have something wrong with the cords and they can cause a fire. I surprised it took them so long to figure this out.

If you have one of the older models they want you to call them and get send for a new cable, I think it's free.

Microsoft to Recall Xbox Cords Due to Electrical Issue


Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, said it will recall 14.1 million power cords for its Xbox video game console after a defect gave some users minor singe burns and scorched carpets.

Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft said the recall covered all Xboxes made for continental Europe before Jan. 13, 2004, and units made for the rest of the world before Oct. 23, 2003.

Consoles built after those dates were designed in such a way that the failures no longer occurred, Bach said. "It ends up being a combination of both things in the box and circumstances," he said. "It did take us quite a bit of time to understand that there was a challenge."

The company declined to say who manufactured the defective units but said it was accepting responsibility for the problem. Microsoft also declined to comment on what the replacement program would cost the company, other than characterizing it as a "significant investment."

The recall represents a significant portion of the worldwide Xbox installed base of more than 20 million. Microsoft debuted the Xbox in November 2001 in the United States and subsequently rolled it out worldwide.

Based on reports to its customer service unit and warranty repair data, Bach said Microsoft had observed a failure rate of about 1 in 10,000 units.

In seven of those units, users reported suffering minor burns akin to briefly touching a hot iron. In 23 cases, users reported minor smoke damage or burns to a carpet or entertainment center.

Affected customers can request a new power cord free of charge via the Web site, Xbox.com (www.xbox.com), or by calling toll-free 1-866-271-0450.

Microsoft said customers would get replacement cords within 2-4 weeks from the time of order, and in the interim it advised users to turn off their Xboxes when not in use.

In March 2002, Japanese retailers temporarily stopped selling the console just weeks after its launch there because some machines were scratching discs. The company made an unconditional offer to replace hardware and any damaged software.

Bach said some consoles on retail shelves in Japan and Korea were also affected by the electrical problem and Microsoft was working with retailers there to replace the cords in those units.

Microsoft is widely expected to release a successor to the Xbox this year. Rival and industry leader Sony Corp. is expected to launch the third version of its popular PlayStation console next year.

If you are having the same problem I am..it's your lazer eye not reading properly. Do you get dirty disc errors? Or sometimes you get an error message right from the dashboard telling you it won't play? That's what mine was doing.

Sometimes, buying a good DVD player cleaner kit will help...for a bit. Didn't help me though.
 
I tried that too Jen....any ideas what the next step is?

Seriously, several other people I know have had this problem. I was really hoping the recall was related to this so I could play my games again 🙁

My boyfriend's XBox is older than mine, he got it when it first came out and has no problems like this...
 
Yeah there's three drives that they manufactured. The Thompson, the Samsung, and the Phillips. If you search on the net for identifying your xbox drive or something similar they will show you pics of how you can tell (you can tell by what the tray looks like when it's open).

The only recommendation, is send it back to MS (gasp!) or find someone who knows about electronics and can look at repairing it...note: it should be someone who is trained or VERY good at computer and DVD repair...as that's essentially what it is! Also, once you take the sticker off to get at one of the screws, your warranty is completely void...so if you DO have a warranty, I wouldn't do that.

Me, I bought a new one...GRR and I will eventually get around to opening the other one up (well we DID open it up which is how we determined what was wrong with it). It sucks doesn't it??
 
If anybody's having diffuculty with their XBox Lasers, Microsoft have a service line who may be able to help you out getting it repaired or replaced. If you PM me your country or state and I can try and get you the XBox service line for your area. Ain't it useful to have friends in the biz? 😀

As for opening it up... for God's sake, only open it up if the next step is throwing it out. Not only does it void any warranty, repairguys are reluctant to touch it if you've been tinkering with it.

On the topic of the faulty cable... from the press releases we recieved, MS have been playing down any potential danger, but Microsoft do recommend that if you bought your XBox in 2003 or before, plug it out until you verify for certain that it's not part of the affected batch. Dang totally missed this! Expect a PM 😀

As for the power cable...I got a letter from Microsoft in the mail. You go to a special Web site and input your serial code. If yours is one of the Xboxes affected, they will send you out a new power cord in the mail, absolutely free. You don't even need to mail in your old one, they are just mass replacing them at no cost.

Forgot to post this - The US and Canadian helpline is 1-800 4 MY XBOX . God, I'd say the guys at Microsoft spent hours coming up with that. Anyway, they'll probably ask you for the serial number, which you'll find printed on the base of the Xbox. Xbox services are fairly solid here, but I'm not sure how reliable they are across the water. If they offer to repair or replace the 'Box, be sure to ask for written confirmation of what they plan to do, and how much they may expect you to pay towards the cost of it if it's out of Warranty.

Let me know how ya'll fare.

Yes that's the number I use for my Live service...didn't know it was there general all-round number. I'm so wary about sending it back to MS....I've heard horror stories...I'll probably get it back a year later 😀 But I will check into it thanks!
 
Just wanted to post that Microsoft sent my replacement power cord...only took 4 business days! It's great, nicer one than the ones the stock Xboxes come with (even the new ones).

So everyone hop on that...get your replacements! Cordelia.... this means you! 🙂
 
I haven't got an XBox, but I want one though because I found out that the first Buffy game isn't for playstation 2. 🙁
 
Yes, yes, yes, YES! YEAH!

I got Urbz sims finally.
I Kmart in my area was closing so I went down there and looked around.
I got the last one they had for X-box, they had more but for PS2.
I paid $37.49
 
i don't have an x-box.. or ps1 or 2... Though my boyf and i have a fine collection of nintendo stuff.. we have all their consoles(sp?) and my boyf have all the nintendo game boys..though he haven't bought DS yet though :winking11 ....
