In BTVS and AtS, who gets the best supporting character honors? Comics are included. Now, the term "supporting character" is a little tough to define, but I'm gonna try. Obviously, Buffy and Angel don't count. I don't think, given their roles on the shows and in the comics, that you can count Spike or Faith as supporting characters either. I know it's kind of hard to see the boundaries.

For me, the choice is fairly easy. For supporting characters, there's Cordelia, and then there's everybody else. The person she becomes on AtS is just incredible, and her relationships, both romantic and not, with Angel, Doyle, Wesley, Lorne and just about everyone else is so awesome.

However, I will say that Xander in S8 has been the absolute best of him, and he's actually my single favorite character in S8 so far.

I'm going to classify supporting into two groups, if that's okay: characters that aren't the main character, and characters that never were part of the main cast.

Not the main character: Wesley. How he progressed and grew as a character is simply -incredible-. I think if the Scoobies met the S4 of ATS Wesley, keeping in mind only the Bad Girls- Graduation Day memory, they would be stoked, and actually rather embarrassed at their own progression. He's full of conviction, fascinating, wonderful to watch, both a warrior and a thinker. Okay gotta stop gushing.

For not in the main cast: Darla. If it comes down to Wesley or Darla, I'd say Wesley is better, however. Yet Darla is a history rich character, comprised of over 400 years. Her relationship with Angel is wonderfully complex. Being born again in Wolfram & Hart, how she doesn't want her soul at all, and when she is vamped, she is so angry about it, she and Dru massacres a room of lawyers. Her hatred of being pregnant is completely complex: she feels like its unnatural, she feels like she has a soul, it brings her back to Angel, she used to kill children and now, she is having a child, and at the end, she accepts the child. She's the most tragic kind of evil as a vampire, a victim as a human, and that's what makes her so fascinating.

Too hard...Giles, Lorne and Wesley on the same list. Impossible to choose!!

Like Jodast I'm unashamedly biased....but with Cordelia, instead of Tara.

I considered Lorne, because I adore him also. But, Cordy always wins with me 🙂

I went with Willow. She was awesome from the beginning, developed and changed and grew, experiencing the dark side as well as the light, fighting for redemption and also appearing in Angel 🙂

Tara. Because I love my bb 😛

In all honesty, I think that she was under-rated as a character. It took me a while to warm up to her character, but now that I have, I shamelessly love her...in the way that you can love a ficitonal TV character...hope that's not too creepy...

Wesley.

He's my third favorite character in the entire verse after Buffy and Spike.

Uhhh! Willow and Xander are supporting characters? Wesley and Cordy? Then so are Spike and Faith... Faith appears even less often than all these other characters. 😛

Anyway, it was very tough to pick a single character amongst that HUGE list, but I ended up choosing Cordelia. Despite loving Giles, Lorne and Wesley to death, Cordy left much more of a mark for me (in AtS of course). She greatly helped in changing Angel from the horrible cloud of boringness he was in BtVS to a three dimensional character with some depth on his show. No offense to the BB'ers who loved him from the start. 😉
