A recent BBC programme about Funny Women was on, and it got me thinking about who I like.(FYI the show itself was pants, but the Comediennes involved are cool)

Well here is my Ultimate(coincidently the presenter of the show).

Dawn French.

Here are some clips to show you why.

Catherine Spartacus Zeta Douglas Jones

Catherine Spartacus Zeta Douglas Jones the 2nd

Catherine Spartacus Zeta Douglas Jones the 3rd

Bjork

Harry Potter and the Secret Chamberpot of Azerbaijan

The French and Saunders: Lord of the Rings: Fellowship

Gee how did I know what this thread would be about? Gee I wonder could it be because you were talking to me about it right before you posted this thread?

lol, she is so funny! That HP one is brilliant and the LOtR had me in tears from laughter!

Dawn can be very funny, especially when working with Jennifer Saunders but I don't think she's consistent. She's been involved with a few stinkers in the past. The most consistently funny lady for me has to be Victoria Wood (especially when working with Julie Walters).

Did you mean that programme last weekend where Dawn was interviewing lots of female comics and comic actors? I thought it was quite good fun...even though I didn't recognise most of the American participants.

This is definitely a British post! So I'm going to Canadian on all your tea-sipping butts!!!
Mary Walsh
Cathy Jones
They started out in Newfoundland on show called Codco and moved to This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Mary's 'Marg Delahunty Warrior Princess' is hilarious and Cathy does so many imitations they are too numerous to mention. But I will tell you this she can play a man better then that sad attempt by Julie Andrews.

I'm sorry but the funniest woman ever needs no introduction....but here's her name just in case you forgot.

Jo Brand.

End discussion

(lol, please continue the discussion. I just said to end the discussion for dramatic effect....)

WHO??? Are we back to British comediennes?
Jo Brand would be in my top 5 British lady comics...actually she would be in my top 5 comics...I'd put her ahead of BotD's fave Dawn French, if push came to shove

You people have no taste, get out of my thread!!!

LOL

Seriously though, Jo Brand?

I think she is funny, and I do like her stand-up but thats all she does.

To take the role of Funniest Woman I would submit that the person who is your choice should be well known in performing/routines/acting and the writing element.

Jo, bless her is pretty much known only for Few Stand-Ups and Guest Spots on Quix Shows.

Another woman I would place in the top 5 of mine would be Whoopi Goldberg.

She is great, I love her acting(both comic and straight). She is a wonderful Comedienne too.

I agree with the earlier comment that Dawn and Jennifer Saunders together are magnificent but i think if you look at shows such as The Vicar of Dibley and Absolutely Fabulous that these two women are funny in their own right...unlike many other double acts.

Also to respomd to the 'inconsistent' comment.
Hmm, I agree with you in the way that shows like 'Wild West' was terrible, but honestly with the amount of exposrue this woman has, compared to most other Commediennes, then the occasional floppy sitcom(one cause i loved Murder Most Horrid) and the very rare bad sketch Then i really wouldn't say she was inconsistent, just rarely has a poorly executed Idea.

Dawn and Jennifer are two brilliant comidiennes. Also, Victoria Wood is hilarious, and also, Catherine Tate is good to some extent.

Men are better at comedy. I really don't think Dawn French is particularly funny.

Jo Brand is funny the first couple of times you see her, but her vulgar comedy gets old, quite quickly.

I don't know a lot about her, but I've seen Lisa Lampanelli on TV a few times, and I was SHOCKED at some of the stuff she said, yet I found her crude humor hilarious.

I'd like to put in more Canadian Content here! I'll put my votes in for Nikki Payne and Jessica Holmes.

Nikki Payne is from Nova Scotia. She has a huge speech impediment, which she uses to her best advantage, and she is very rude and crude. Her bit about duct-taping her boobs is absolutely hilarious, and she randomly "humps" stuff just to get the reaction! Too funny!

Jessica Holmes is best when she is doing sketches, but her standup is good nevertheless. Her impression of Celine Dion made my jaw drop! She was doing it on TV, and at one point she was talking about Rene Anguile, Celine's much older Svengali-type husband (they started dating when she was 14). Her line was something like "...and when Rene was done, you know, statutory raping me..." Far from being offended, Celine has actually shown up and done a number with her...two Celines...aaaaaaugh, my blood sugar is too high!!! She also throws in stuff so quick you miss it if you aren't paying attention. References to camel toes, sixty-nines, etc. I love that stuff!
