^ Heeheehee. A bit off topic, but the "forever love" quote makes me think of House yelling "You can't stop our love!" through the conference room door at Cuddy . . . one of my favorite House moments.

Of the options given, I voted for Spike because he was the only one who could handle Buffy as a strong leader. Angel treated her like a kid and wanted to make decisions FOR her instead of WITH her and Riley could not handle the fact that Buffy was a better and stronger warrior. Of the three, Spike eventually came the closest to being her equal and actually respecting her strengths.

That said, I wanna pick Xander! I am still holding out hope that Buffy and Xander are endgame.

how did Angel treat buffy like a kid?
Well, from my view, he did have a tendency to treat Buffy as though she had no real idea about the decisions she was making.

For example in The Prom:
Buffy: You think I haven't thought about this?!
Angel: But have you? Realistically?
Buffy: No, no, of course not I'm just some silly school girl right?

And then I thought he was treating her in a childlike way in Earshot after he tells her what he thought about Faith and he says to her in almost patient-parent kinda way, 'Next time- just ask'.

And he does refer to her and her friends quite often as kids. Being in his 240s it's only natural that at times he'd remember just how young they are, and so view Buffy and co as merely children.

^ What she said.

Probably because of his age, Angel has a tendency to treat everyone that way. I get that, but that dynamic really turned me off of the Buffy/Angel romantic connection. Buffy wasn't as strong an individual when she was with Angel as she was when she was alone. She let him treat her like a kid. She let him make decisions for her without putting up much of a fight and eagerly lapped up any little crumb of time or affection he’d give her. She gave him the majority of the power in the relationship -- and that's not what I wanted to see from the title character in my show about a superhero.

Ultimately, I like romantic relationships that are based on friendship, shared experience, respect, and equality and then progress into something more. That's why I much preferred Cangel to Bangel. The relationship felt kind of forced and ended horribly, but Cordy loudly and often demanded (and, usually, received) Angel's respect. As for Buffy, I really want her with Xander. They've got the whole friendship, shared experience, respect, loyalty, and equality thing down. In my mind, next comes love. I'm not really knocking Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Riley, or Buffy/Spike. I'm just saying none of those three were really what I was looking for as a viewer. I was much more satisfied with Xander/Anya and Willow/Tara than I was with any of Buffy’s relationships. Buffy/Angel was all angsty and romantic, Buffy/Riley was stable and boring until it wasn't, and Buffy/Spike was hot, but seriously screwed up until near the end. There are pros and cons to all of these relationships. They're all valuable learning experiences for Buffy. In the end, though, I just don't think she's yet found her Mr. Right (although I do think he's right under her nose!).

I had issues with all Buffy's relationships. My main issue with Spike and Buffy was equality. This theme reverberated even into Season 5 of Spike. I don't know how Buffy felt but it seemed evident to me that he didn't consider himself an equal to her. Either this is just his insecurity or the Season 6 portion of the relationship really did a number on him.

Also the the whole "The soul the changes..." mini speech got me as well. I felt like saying "Spike get some balls, what you want?" I definitely agree that all of the guys were more interesting after being with Buffy but perhaps better for knowing her. They've all been support lines in some shape or form and I honestly believe Buffy would be either down or dead without knowing them (this is certainly true of Spike and Angel). That said, all of her lovers leaving her in some way must have stung and left our hero with a bit of a complex without forgetting two of these relationships involved abuse of some kind.

i voted spike of course 😀

i loved them together...when she was being nice to him of course LOL!

of course i liked the bangel relationship too...but it all got a bit too sappy and weepy towards the end...like the doomed relationship that cud never be lol

Edit:

oooh just noticed spike is beating angel....

gotta say was expecting more people to be for bangel...but im glad hes winning LOL

^ As for Buffy, I really want her with Xander.

The writers have often toyed with the concept of Buffy and her best male friend Xander being a romantic couple. Xander had a crush of Buffy in the early seasons, but it was unrequited, with Buffy actually rejecting him when he finally admitted his feelings. When Buffy found herself greatly attracted to Xander while under the influence of a love spell, she was grateful to him for not taking advantage of the situation. More recently, Buffy experiences a strange dream in which she propositions Xander and kisses him on the lips, causing his head to pop off. Jane Espenson claims in the DVD commentary for "I Was Made To Love You" that "it certainly was set up that the two of them should end up together". Sarah Michelle Gellar has gone on record as saying, "I honestly believe [Joss'] original intention was to put Xander and Buffy together. I really do believe that."

I know. That's why I totally think they're still end game. I don't think the end answer will be either Angel or Spike: I think it will be the one man who's always there for her, loves her unconditionally, and doesn't ask for anything in return.
For sure Xander had great love for Buffy and vice versa but I've never thought about their love as romantic one. I think it was just friend love similar to that between Xander and Willow. Xander had that crush on Buffy once but it wasn't nothing serious and it didn't last. I just can't imagine Xander loving Buffy the way he loved Anya.
Don't know what the intentions of Joss are but I've always seen things this way.

spike spike SPIKE!
i love him and buffy together way more than i liked her and angel.
as for riley... i never liked him. ugh.

I really disliked Riley's character. He was too butch for my liking. Angel I feel belongs to Cordy now, after watching ANGEL. Spike and Buffy had intense chemistry even if it was violent at times, plus their scenes together was always H.O.T.

Weirdly enough, i do not really like Buffy with BF (or GF before someone comments) at all. She just does not seem to match anyone.

I liked them all for what they offered.

Bangel = first, true love
Biley = good happy stable love
Spuffy = passionate crazy wild raw love

OF COURSE I LIKE SPUFFY THE MOST... (gee who'duh thunk it?)

While none of my fave ships have Buffy in it (pretty much all of them end with "illow" ), of those three given in the poll it's so clearly Spike for me. Riley just bores me, and Bangel, while I didn't mind it at all until "Becoming", annoys me to death in S3.

Anyway, the great thing about Spuffy is that while they started out perversely abusive and destructive, they managed to grow out of it, into mutual respect and, in my eyes, mutual love (the famous last lines notwithstanding, I gave my spin on them in another thread already). That's a pretty strong, positive and hopeful vision for a relationship.

However, Bander, while I didn't think much of it during the show's TV time, is a ship I would keep an eye out for in the future. Actually, to me the thought that they've been through so much together that it doesn't seem likely for them to go all "romantic" over each other is a bonus in my book. For me, true love is nothing about romance. I hate the concept. "Best friends who also like to kumshuck" is way closer to what I consider love, and I can easily imagine Bander going into that direction.

I agree wholeheartedly with the Bander portion of the post. Best friends + comshucking = fabulous love (says she who married the best friend she most liked to comshuck, so I'm super biased).
Ship ahoy!

While none of my fave ships have Buffy in it
The only ship I want is one I can take a Mediterranean cruise on.
Buffy can certainly be in my cabin. Naked Buffy!
:thought:

Good thing Buffy can't read my thoughts...

lol. How very Xander of you.
Buffy's best boyfriend has got to be Angel in my opinion, as a bangel its a given.

I think her healthiest and safest boyfriend though was Riley. Although even Buffy pointed out that maybe she needs all the angst to make her relationships work.

Angel all the way.

Riley....don't get me started on Riley. Maybe he was the most "normal" (as "normal" as a secret government soldier can be, anyway) but oh, how I hated him.

And Spike...I love Spike, I do, but as others have said, their relationship was far too destructive. There was no romance there. Maybe there was on Spike's end, but not on Buffy's. It was 90% sex and self-hatred and I think it's weird to even call Spike her boyfriend.

Bangel, on the other hand, = love.
