Sweet, the demon in Once More with Feeling. He doesn't "win" but he unleashes chaos just by forcing people to be truthful. I know a lot of people who would fear a truth demon more than anything else.

@Ethan Reigns I think what makes Sweet such a delight is that he didn’t really win or lose. He showed up for a few days, made everyone sing their hearts and minds out, then left! I don’t even think he had a “villainous” plan.

For myself, from a character point, Sunday. Great villain and her “game” with the painting posters was hilarious.

From a design POV though? Really unpopular choice, but Moloch the Corruptor. I Robot…You Jane is a bad episode, but Moloch’s design is an awesome golden nugget. In a first season with episodes like The Pack or Teacher’s Pet, I actually think his cyber-demon transformation looks incredible.

*Okay, I know she was in two episodes of Buffy, but she went by two different names, so I'm counting her as a one episode character.

To be honest I can't choose? As I have said before both shows excelled at creating memorable one off villains. That was their real strength, that they never fell into generic villains of the week like say meta humans, or meteor freaks, or angry spirits.

They treated every villain like they were the best.

Supporting characters

Rebecca Lowell. (I really like that actress and she brought out Angelus.)

The psychic girl that was Lorne's friend who told him to go to Pylea. We didn't see much of her, but she was cute and likable.

Alona Gunn (I think she'd have been a great lead to be honest. Maybe even more so than Fred.)

That fangirl from Cordelia's alternate universe that she Gunn and one armed Wes save. We don't know much about her, but she is nice and played by Aimee Garcia so she makes my list.

Surprisingly I can't think of many other one time supporting characters, not monsters that made much of an impression on me right now LOL. I'll get back to you.

Sweet for Buffy by a country mile. I agree however there were some awesome one shots! I am amazed how many world class actors appeared on both series, often in one or two episode roles that were spectacular as a result.

In Angel, it is much harder. For me it is between Sam Lawson, a truly tragic character, and the faithful couple James & Elizabeth. Also tragic and they gave the lie to the idea vampires could not love absolutely and sacrificially.
I think i give a slight edge to James & Elizabeth as they add to the vampire lore in a very interesting way, meaning they affect more than the episode rhey were in.

As with so many of the monsters, they acting was very effective too.

I think I'm going to go along with Ford. I love Jason Behr lol. I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody.

For me, it was a toss up between Sunday and Kathy. Difficult choice, but I'm going with Kathy. She was just SO annoying, and oh God, she made me laugh.

Holden Webster (CWDP), Sweet (OMWF), Sunday(Freshman) & Catherine Madison (Witch) for the villains. I won't list Kathy (Living Conditions) even though she's one of my favorites because she is technically in two episodes, not one. Honorable Mentions to Marcie (Out of Mind, Out of Sight), Sid (Puppet Show) & April (I was Made to Love You)-- they were almost like pseudo-villains...also like Ford (Lie to Me). Ford was most tragic along with Cassie (Help) of course..

Lydia (Checkpoint) & Vaughne (Killer in Me), a watcher & a witch....could've been more to them. Lydia could've been a spy on the scoobies for the council, maybe got killed or brain sucked by Glory. Vaughne could've led into more Amy in Season 7, with the campus witches trying to bring Willow to the dark side.

Who I most wanted to see more of... Cassie, Sunday, Janice (All the Way), Richard (Older & Far Away) & Owen (Never Kill a Boy on the first date)...Richard maybe not as much but definitely Owen; He was too much of a foil for Angel so there really wasn't much of a place for him past this episode (even though I would've loved it he eventually became part of the scoobies) but we should've at least seen him more than once throughout the high school seasons.

on Angel my favorites were Manjet (Long Days Journey), Ilona Costa Bianchi (Girl in Question), Rebecca Lowell (Eternity) & Mistress Myrna (A New World)! Mistress Myrna is the blue haired witch or sorceress or whatever she was that closed the portal in the Hyperion after Connor came back through. She was an interesting character and it would've been cool to see her work magics with Willow in Season 4 vs. Angelus & Jasmine.

Penn (Somnambulist) & James (Heartthrob) were great one ep villains. Also Russel Winters (City Of) - his death is very memorable & Roger Wyndam Price (Lineage) even though it was wasn't technically him... amazing moment when Wesley shoots him for Fred.

I wish Sunday had been the main villain of Season 4 instead of the boring, cumbersome Adam thing...wasn't she supposed to have been a bigger character with an interesting backstory? (former slayer turned vampire)

I was also impressed by Amy's mom in the first season who demonstrated some Willow season 6 level of witch power. What an overpowered monster of the week...that witch probably could have killed The Master.

April (The robot built by Warren, seen only in episode S05E15 "I was made to love you").

She was so brutally, over the top superlikeable. Most of the time, anyway. Also, the way she threw Spike through the window was funny. Unfortunately, the way she attacked Katrina, not so much at all.

Well, and that episode really leaves to question why Warren didnt get in trouble right there. Another case of "The Sunnydale police is useless" ?

Second place to Ted. I just loved how "real" the combat with him felt.

Hmm. Is it a bad sign I like the robot characters so much ?!?!? Ah well, the rest are all kinds of demons and stuff. I'm sure its fine.

I instantly thought of Sweet as my favourite! I thought his acting was brilliant, plus his voice and incredible style all makes him such a standout one episode character for me! But scanning the above posts, there are so many standout ones that you've all reminded me of! This is such a tough question.

It would definitely be Sweet followed very closely by The Gentleman and Sunday.

An honourable mention for character design alone has to go to the loan shark in Tabula Rasa.
