Kelly Maxwell from Ash Vs Evil Dead?
Ace from Doctor Who?
Now I don't mean in terms of looks as all three are gorgeous and waaaaaay out of my league. I'm talking entirely in terms of characterisation.
I've picked these three out meanwhile because honestly I think they are all kind of the same character in a lot of ways.
Basically all three of them are the gruff tomboy who is designed to be a more badass role model for little girls. All aren't just tough, they are incredibly brutal, like Kelly stuffing a bad guy into a meat grinder, or Ace bashing a Dalek with a baseball bat. Unlike say Xena, they don't fight with fancy martial arts. They're more the kick you in the nuts, then stab a bottle in your eye kind of a fighter. In fact all are such wild cards, you wonder if they could even go rogue in some way like Ace and Kelly regularly being reckless and taking on unstoppable villains on their own, or Faith eventually going evil. Visually all are also brunettes, all dress in dark leather, all again are shorter, but still look capable. Again they're not a big Lucy Lawless type, but they're not quite as deceptively small and slender as say Buffy. All are also designed to be positive role models for little girls not just by being stronger, but by having interests that little girls are generally told they shouldn't have, such as Ace loving Dinosaurs and explosives, Faith loving rock music and video games, and Kelly having a similar filthy sense of humor to Bruce Campbell. All of them are also clearly bisexual, though interestingly enough it's never said for sure. All have canon male love interests, from Robin to Pablo to Sorin. However they all have very strong, very overt lesbian subtext with other characters like Faith and Buffy, Ace and well every woman she comes into contact with LOL, but special mention to Kara, whilst Kelly and Ruby also have a strong lesbian subtext in the second series (Ruby is played by Lucy Lawless so what do you expect?)
Also all of them despite being total badasses are a bit emotionally unstable, come from a broken home, are all shown to lack parental figures, and all are quite vulnerable in places. All also find an older male figure who helps put them on the right path, serves as the mentor they never had elsewhere and who they form a close bond with, the Doctor in Ace's case, Angel in Faith's and Ash in Kelly's. Said male figure however is every bit as unstable, dark and lost too, and she ends up helping him just as much through their relationship and saves him at different points.
Finally all three almost had their own spin offs. Death Comes To Time, one of the alternate sequel series to DW, has Ace take over as the pilot of the TARDIS after the Doctors final death, whilst there were plans for a Faith spin off series that sadly went nowhere. Finally there were reportedly talks of a Kelly spin off series or of Kelly taking over the films, but again sadly nothing came of them.
Question is which do you prefer?
Well haha, I am a bit biased here as Sophie is now my leading lady and has done an excellent job playing my characters. Still all personal attachment aside, it's kind of hard to choose as they all have their strengths.
Ace is undoubtedly the most well developed, which is even more impressive as she had arguably the least amount of screen time. Only two seasons, where as Kelly had 3 and Faith was around for four years. Ace's story arc is the most fleshed out with her history in Perivale and her mother, both of which actually drove stories. Also her relationship with McCoy was the most interesting. Not only where there more touching moments, like the final scene, but in terms of conflict. Even Angel and Faith doesn't have anything as cruel and unexpected as him making her lose his faith in him in Fenric haha.
Faith meanwhile is by far the most badass. Not just in universe as she has super strength but in terms of the fight scenes. Obviously Buffy could get away with more due to its budget than DW or even Ash vs Evil Dead. The final Buffy vs Faith fight is amazing, and also credit to Faith for having the most unpredictable, and spicy arc when she went evil. Just when you thought you had her pegged, she'd do the opposite, like when you think she saved Buffy because she wanted to redeem herself, only to see it was to join the Mayor, or when you thought she was so evil they had to put her down on Angel and then she goes through a redemption arc.
Kelly finally brought a lot more humour to the part and had the most creative fight scenes like the puppet fight. Also I think Kelly benefited from being older. It's true that both Ace and Faith suffer from being a middle aged, middle class guys idea of a working class girl and both use totally radical slang like "Come on get down and dirty B!" I mean in a way that's part of the charm of watching them back. They're like Dracula AD 1972, time capsules of people who were out of touch in the past haha. Still Kelly being older thankfully avoided that.
Overall I'd say objectively they all balance each other out, and all three were hugely popular too so it's not like one was less successful than the other. I will probably go for Sophie not just out of loyalty LOL, but because to be fair Ace was the first character like that, and it was very groundbreaking back in the 80s.
Still who do you prefer? Incidentally I was thinking of doing this for the three actresses like I did for Julian McMahon, James Marsters and Mark Sheppard, but interestingly enough, I don't think Sophie, Dana or Eliza were typecast at all by these characters. Sophie even in the other sci fi things she was in played different kinds of characters, Dana meanwhile hasn't done any genre or action things since, and Eliza whilst remaining primarily a genre actress, again played different kinds of roles like in Tru Calling where she was a more vulnerable character.
