Who likes Angel?

I've probably said this a lot, but I'll say it again because that's what this thread is for. I completely adore Angel. He's the reason I watched Buffy back when I couldn't say the show's name aloud without feeling ridiculous, and he's the reason I started buying the season eight comics thirty-three issues in despite my longstanding dislike for almost everything about them. His scenes are always the ones I pay most attention to, and I greatly prefer his show to Buffy seasons four through seven. Why do I adore him? Quite apart from loving Buffy/Angel more than any other fictional relationship I've ever encountered, his soulless alter-ego being my favorite villain ever, and thinking he's one of the most attractive men on television, I adore him because he was handed a crapsack life that puts all other crapsack lives to shame, but he took that life and became a champion. There are many, many other reasons, but that's what a lot of them come down to, so I'll leave it at that.

Obviously I dig Spike and his relationship with Buffy; but that doesn't influence how I see Angel. Boreanaz started Angel off as a goofy dude with cryptic messages; and eventually turned him into a bad ass sword wielding vampire with a soul. I dig having him as a cool Irish character; don't have enough of those on television.

I hate what the writers did to Angel's character in the comic; but the character that Boreanaz brought to life is not hampered or lessened in my mind because of that. I think his portrayal in DH is so pale in comparison to what IDW turned out.

So don't blame Angel; blame the people who didn't bother to understand the character under their control before they wrote his arc in S8.

I know some people have argued that S8 fits in line with Angel's story; but I disagree. The Angel that we saw through 8 seasons of television was occasionally misguided; sometimes downright foolish. But orchestrating a plot like this under orders from "a dog" is a far departure (to me at least) from locking some evil lawyers in a room to be eaten.

After the Fall already told how the path to hell is paved with good intentions; why did we need to tell it again; not half as well?

EDIT: And despite what my man Spike says; I dig Angel's hair; the shorter cut at least. If only the barbers here didn't mess it up every time I explained it to them.

That's one thing about Angel that annoys me, the complete and utter lack of exploration of his Irishness. It was like they gave him a soul and suddenly he was American.

There's a few historical reasons that could explain all of this but I still think where he came from should have shone more in who he was.

Angel is AWESOME. I LOVE him. I LOVE the show. I'm not a Bangel. I'm a Cangel. But that still means I like Angel! (That kinda rhymed.. haha)
I like Angel in different ways than Spike. Spike is sexy and makes me wanna do naughty things(sw), but Angel is like a big brother type figure.
He's nice, he's helpful, he wants redemption. He has a kind soul. I wish I had a big brother like Angel, seriously. He'd be the coolest out there...
So, don't think I hate angel just cause I like Spike...
Anywho.... To sum up my answer, yes, I do like Angel!😀

P.S.
Not to confuse with Angelus. I liked the story line(s), but of course I'm not keen with the "bad boy" thing. Angelus was scary, mean, and just plain cruel and I didn't like that character much... He was funny, but not big brotherly... lol

I love Angel; even with his flaws I still adore him. I really like Angelus too, he is one of my all time favorite villains.

Sometimes I think I may like Angel better as a series than BTVS because of how much I love his character.
 
Ive never been a massive fan of Angel, its not that he's a bad character or anything he was needed for storylines to progress but he was such a condescending complainer sometimes lol

Angelus on the other hand I loved!!

😀 I started this thread quite a while ago now, I think. There was a lot of Angel bashing going on around the time I posted it. There has been more threads about Spike recently which is, I guess, why you've seen more of that of late. But this thread didn't come out of nowhere, I promise!

I am glad to see it resurrected though. 🙂 I know there's all kinds of crazy going on in the comics but as I don't read them I still love my carebear with fangs!

I love Angel, the character and show! In my opinion, his show isn't as good as Buffy, but still an excellent show. Great characters, some great twists and good humor
 
not a lot of people dislike Angel. you have to understand that this forum doesn't represent the entine fanbase population, it probably represents 1% of the fanbase, he is one of the most popular vampires in pop culture, he's been consistently on top 10 vamps in pop culture, usually behind Dracula as #2, lately he's been compared to the new ripoff Edward from Twilight.
 
I love Angel!! he is one of my favorite characters. 😀 David Boreanaz is excellent as him, plus he is so beautiful.
I don't get the Angel hate either, and I think he has nice hair.

I think a lot of hate or dislike for Angel is because a a lot of fans think in term of Bangel/Spuffy. They are afraid their favourite guy/vampire doesn't end with the blonde slayer. And they need to attack and despise obviously not the blonde slayer but the other vampire. Plus there's another competition highlighted in the story itself and the fans embrace it completely.

Can't we think about Angel and Spike without any sort of ship competition and without stating 'my vampire is better than yours'?
 
I love Angel, and I love Bangel. I don't like Spuffy at all, but I still like Spike. Spike's cool.

Angel is my favorite vamp on the show. He's the good guy. Plus, he's really nice to look at... 😛

For me, I love Angel although I'm a diehard Spuffy. I just don't like him with Buffy, particularly by s3, because I felt they didn't make each other stronger. They didn't complement each other well (and I felt this before I liked Spuffy). And I only want the best for Angel so, as much as I love Buffy, I don't think she was/is the best for him in the long run. I may prefer Spike as my favorite vampire and as the better match for Buffy, but I still love good old Captain Forehead. 😉

Agreed 100% 🙂 People have preferences as to which one they think is better, but I don't think that ultimately means one vampire is better than the other. Both are just different and go on different paths.

Ok, I was going to stay out of this thread... but cordangel said something I want to respond to. I don't like Angel. My dislike for Angel has nothing to do with my shippping preference just like my love for Spike isn't because I like Spuffy. I like Spuffy BECAUSE I like Spike and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with Angel. I just don't like him. He was OK my first watch of Buffy... my first watch of AtS he started to really kind of piss me off. My second watch all the way through of both series and I really didn't like him at all. The more I think about it, the more I dislike him.

Same here. I like Spuffy because of Buffy and Spike. It has nothing to do with whether one likes or hates Angel. Although, I wonder if the same could be said about Bangel and the Spike hate.
