I agree with the fact that 'she left him out' but I don't think that was because she only had him around when it suited her. I don't believe for a second she used him.
She felt a mutual love and attraction to him; that much is for sure. She was cut up when he left and jealous when he came back with a wife-in-tow so there was love and attraction there; she did feel for him. She felt enough to be hurt by him, that's for sure.
The reason that Riley was sidelined by her was because he was no Angel. He was an Initiative boy which made their relationship easier because she could be honest about who she was which was a strength in their relationship. At the same time, Riley was vulnerable and she kept him away to protect him. This was their weakness. He wanted to do the manly thing and protect her but the truth that she knew was that she was always going to end up protecting him. That's why she kept him away.
