Who likes Riley?

I think Riley was a good guy, but personally I don't think he had much to work with. Buffy never loved Riley like she did Angel, I think that mostly throughout S4 he was just 'new' and that's why she spent all of her time with him, but in retrospect, I don't think Buffy's loved anyone like she did Angel (yes, including Spike).
Riley really put himself out for Buffy when you consider he left the initiative, pretty much abandoned his friends and gave up everything to be with her. I can honestly say I understand and agree with pretty much everything he said to her in S5, when they were breaking up. Also, if you imagine Riley without the whole stupid 'Initiative' arc, he's much more likable. I hated the initiative, and for a long time my opinion of that arc really impacted what I thought of Riley.

Which only tells me that when it comes to love, Buffy has bad taste.

I don't think she had "bad" taste, I just think she had to feel a little bit of danger to feel safe in a relationship, if that makes any sense... After all, she is the Slayer. She fights evil on a daily/nightly basis, so like Spike said, she needed a little monster in her man. Except she really didn't NEED it, she just WANTED it. I still hate that Riley didn't last longer in the show. I loved him. 🙂

Riley was cute in the beginning, when he couldn't find the words to ask Buffy out & went to Willow for advice, but in the end he just annoyed me and I was glad he left/Buffy never caught him.

Riley

The first time I saw him I thought he was an intruder in the Slayer/Paranormal world. He was. He got too deep into the world of the Paranormal. Then when he and Buffy started going out I was shocked. From that point I was wishing for him to die throughout the season 4-5. Then when he came back in season 6(i think) and was married I thought he was just some B***** no good boy. Which is what he is. To think that he made her choose....that was just mean. I hate him. He is a rotton little boy for being so selfish and not caring about Buffy's feelings::bbat::

I think he cared a lot. But, not unlike Tara, he couldn't stay as long as their relationship was playing out like that without being ruined himself. At the end of the day we all need to look out for ourselves in a relationship. We are not doing anyone a favour by staying in a relationship, be it love or friendship, that wrecks us.

excellent point
I don't. In the beginning, I sort of did, though. But when he became a regular, he just started to annoy me more and more. That he annoys me has nothing to do with his relationship with Buffy, as for that, I totally agree with Mirromur above me. I think Buffy treated him more crappy then the other way round. But his character is just soo boring. Even when he had his brief 'dark Riley' period, his charachter just seemed depth-less (what would be 'shallow' in normal peoples English). He was a nice guy, sure, but the kind of nice guy you forget immediatly again. Or at least, IMO.

Rileys important to multiple story arcs in the sense of the Buffy and Spike relationship and helping buffy realise some things about herself that helped her on her on going conquest against evil, he was so important to the show generaly. I think he also helped bring different perspective on how we viewed Buffys life on the show he sort of showed how Buffy needs the danger in her man just like spike said but saying all that he was prety cool character too he had his good moments and his bad ones but overall i think his good moments overshone the bad ones in the end........................luckily

Honestly, I liked him.

He didn't do much to deserve all the hate he gets, just because he isn't a brooding vampire.

Buffy treated him like crap in their relationship, if anything, it was her fault it didn't go well.

Ughh. most people don't even like Riley.. I don't know why. I felt really bad for him. it's not like he was a bad guy.. he just felt neglected 🙁

I don't dislike him. He was sort of funny from times. My problem with Riley, however, is that he reminds me way too much of my brother in a way. I know I'm very shallow that way, but most of my favourite characters are also those I find physically attractive. And with him it's just...I think he might be hot, but everytime I look at him I just think 'there is so much resemblence between him and my brother'.

And then of course in s5 he became....let's call it weird, and there at latest I just wanted him to get our of the show.

Conclusion: Your brother is rather good looking!
It's funny. Everyone is moaning about how Buffy needed a little danger in her relationships. She always had danger in her relationships - whether it was with Angel, Riley or Spike. Love is dangerous. And not only did Buffy managed to get hurt in her relationships with all three of them, she managed to hurt them as well.

Hey everyone! I'm new to the boards and just thought I'd start posting.

Yeah, I didn't like Riley. At first I didn't mind and thought, "Ok, let's see how this ends up." But the whole Buffy and Riley thing was too cheesy and I just didn't like it. He was annoying to me. I didn't think the 2 had a very good chemistry together. Overall, I just didn't like the character lol.

But the world isn't split into brooding vampires and Rileys!
They could have given her a non-vampire boyfriend that wasn't Riley, that was actually a deep, un-annoying, interesting character played by a halfway decent actor, and he probably wouldn't have been hated at all.

I certainly preferred Buffy and Angel with all the great story that came with that, but I have no problems with Riley, or Marc's acting. I felt he was told to play Riley a certain way, and he did just that.

The only part of Riley or the whole Riley storyline I have an issue with is the "when you are with me, you aren't even there" and the whole break-up which I just found (for lack of a better word) odd.

No matter how annoying or needy he became later, I will always have a soft spot for Riley. That's because he punched that swine, Parker. He gave Buffy back some of her shreddded dignity at that time.

Good point!
I liked him and I thought the reason he left Buffy was utterly lame and quite a bit out of character. He added some much needed connection to the "normal world", I think.
