Here's something else to toss into the "who loved Buffy more" argument.

We've all heard the argument about Spike earning his soul while Angel was cursed with his. Here's another slant on that. Both vampires' relationships with Buffy were hampered if not totally prevented by a curse, In Angel's case, it's the famous "one moment of complete happiness" escape clause that Angelus has on that pesky ol' soul. On the other hand, Spike's lack of a soul in the first place is considered a stumbling block to his true feelings for Buffy. Both vampires left Sunnydale because of their respective curses.

Angel went to LA and set up a detective agency in order to "help the helpless," pretty much accepting the fact that his curse would forever keep him away from Buffy. Basically, he accepts his curse and gets on with his unlife. And don't even try to bring thr Shanshu prophecy, because at that point Angel had no knowledge of its existence.

Spike went to Africa to "seek out a legend," determined to rid himself of his curse. Though his motives might be considered more selfish than Angel's, because he was helping himself, not the helpless, that in no way changes the the basic fact. He had a curse, he knew of a way to possibly rid himself of it, and he set out immediately to have the curse removed.

Since the question is, who loved Buffy more, I would have to say that Spike did, simply because he refused to accept that his condition was unalterable. He set out to change it. He fought, he suffered, and he won. Angel, on the other hand, simply accepted his curse, and attempted to create a life, or unlife, without Buffy.

Both men had a curse that would prevent or at least hinder being with Buffy, but Spike loved her enough to not accept things as they were. He took immediate action to have his curse removed. To me, that indicates that Spike loves Buffy more than Angel does.
 
I voted for Spike but really, how do you quantify love? Angel certainly loved her but was a tad less obsessed than Spike. Spike in his human life was a bit of an incurable romantic while Liam/Angel was a drunken sot who bedded as many woman as he could get his hands on.
 
I have debated this issue a lot, because I love Bangel and Spuffy both for different reasons... I think Spike worked harder to prove that he loved Buffy, but overall, Angel was willing to sacrifice everything to do what was right for Buffy, even if it meant letting her go. I think Angel loved her more, but I do also believe that Spike truly loved Buffy in his own way. But Spike was a little more selfish than Angel, which was why he was so willing to change himself to still be able to be with Buffy.
 
i think that Spike only expressed his love for Buffy through lust so much because that was the only entry point she would allow him for a long time.

but in the end, given a choice between fulfilling his own destiny or loving/being loved by Buffy: Angel would choose his destiny, and Spike would choose Buffy. which makes Angel the nobler vamp, but Spike the more in-love vamp, imo.
 
I still think Spike loves Buffy more because Spike loved without a soul until 6-7 ,and when he had a soul he didnt obsessed with Buffy...Angel didnt love when he was evil but Spike did.....

Spike willingly gave up his soul for her; Angel had no choice
Spike was always the one following Buffy around; Angel never actually seeked her out unless it was something important
Spike and Buffy spent more time together! 😛
Spike and Buffy have had sex WAY more times! 😛

And. Angel named his dragon Cordelia, not Buffy.

I don't know if I'm just being stupid here, but what do you mean he willing gave up his soul for her? Do you mean he willingly went to get it and its just the turn of phrase you've used that's confused me?

The soul thing never comes into this debate for me cos I think the whole storyline of Spike getting his soul back too is a complete cop out and it really annoys me. 😛

Time and sex? Quality, not quantity my friend? And I don't think I even need to say this but sex does not equal love. In fact no single sex scene/act between Spike and Buffy was about love, that was the whole point, for me anyway.

And Angel probably did that cos Cordelia is way more like a dragon than Buffy 😛 - either way both names suck as a name for Dragon and he should have called it Doyle.

The main arguments in here would rest on the soul-ness (or lack there of) of Spike and Angel.
Basically, Spike loved Buffy the same, with and without soul. Angel, when he lost his soul went all evil and showed no affection for Buffy, maybe a strange obsession, but not affection. Spike loved her with and without soul.
Also, Angel left. I hold that against him. It was stupid and mean. Spike didn't leave.

Take in mind, in my head i kind of block out the fact that a) spike slept with Anya and b) he tried to rape her. But, he had good reasons behind these actions, like it wasn't because he was set out to really hurt Buffy ... or something.

Anyways, Spike, definitely, loved Buffy more.
 
Sorry, but not everyone thinks Spike loved Buffy with and without a soul. I certainly don't think there is anything he does before getting his soul that shows that he loves her. It is lust, an infatuation, not love. An although Angelus showed no 'love' for Buffy, like Willow says, 'you're still all he thinks about', he is obsessed much like Spike is presoul.

Angel left because he loved Buffy and wanted her to have more for herself than living a half life in a relationship with him. Spike was selfish and thought only of himself, not of Buffy. An nope, Spike didn't leave, but he totally should have! 😛 But in all seriousness, if he loved Buffy he would have left her alone. He wouldn't have hounded her continually, turning up wherever she went and tormenting her.

And I'm sorry, but there are no good reasons as to why you try and rape somebody. I'm not sure if you meant it to come out as blunt as that, but Spike attempting to rape Buffy cannot and should not be defended. There was absolutely no reason good or bad, as to why he would do that.
 
One word: Riley.

Honestly. They had the most 'real' relationship and I think he loved her more than Angel and Spike could. He loved her unconditionally even knowing she could not or would not love him in return. Spikes reason to get a soul was selfish... he wanted to do it FOR him, so he could feel more from her ABOUT him. Angel was selfish because he could not stand to be around something he could not have, and it was easier to leave. Riley loved her more than both, because he sacrificed more of himself to be there for her.

Hey. i never thought of it that way! you're right. i mean, not that i like him or anything, but if you were going to argue over who loved her more...well, he did really love her.
when i read the thread title i automatically said "me" but thats a lie

I think they loved her differently, maybe Xander does in a friendly almost family way more than either of them.
 
Are you people crazy? Angel loved her more. He left her. Do you people know how hard is that? How hard is to leave the person you love because it's right thing to do. Love is selfish. And you do selfish things. He fought that. He lost her. He had to live without her every single day. When he was around she could felt him. They kissed every time he came back. That is love. She loved Spike. But I think she wasn't in love with him. And he knew that. But Angel loved her all the way and he did the right thing. He left her only because he had to.

We hear this a lot, but just how true is it, really? "Lust" implies an overwhelming desire for something or someone, not necessarily expressed sexually. Both pre-soul Spike and Angelus lusted after Buffy. That lust was, at least primarily, the desire to conquer a Slayer, though who's to say whether or not either vampire would have added the humiliation of rape, if the opportunity presented itself, to that conquest? Almost certainly Angelus would have, since he had done that exact thing on at least one occasion before, with Holtz's wife, and Spike's question to Buffy, "Do you know what I've done to girls Dawn's age?" would seem to at least imply either rape or something equally despicable.

But as Buffy said, Spike with a soul was no longer that same man. He fought to become a better man, and he became one, as good a man, if not a better one, than Angel could ever hope to be. That better man loved his Slayer, with no lust involved. If you want to compare the feelings of the two men for Buffy, you have to put them on equal ground. Pre-soul Spike's feelings were no less honorable than those of Angelus. Angel and Spike with souls, that's another matter entirely.

If either vampire, souls possessed, had feelings of simple lust for Buffy, my money would be on Angel. His desires for her sexually were so strong that he had to leave Sunnydale, rather than lose his self control. Spike's feelings were equally strong, but also so pure that he was able to stay by her side, even when she went out with Wood. "I'm alright with it..." Compare that to Angel's reaction to Riley. "Well, you can do that. I'm not allowed to." and "I don't like him."

I dunno really, its like Spuffy was so much passion but Bangel was her first love. Which is more real? or stronger?

I apparentley am crazy because I believe Spike loved her more than Angel did.

As hard as it may be to process, kids, Bangel was just high school love. Buffy was sixteen years old when she "fell in love" with Angel. It ended after high school ended, just like most high school relationsips do in real life.

While unsouled, Spike loved Buffy unrelentlessly. Angel attempted numerous times to kill her friends and family members, and even succeeded once. Not to mention the numerous times Angel(us) has threatened Buffy. His obsession was sick. Moreso than Spike's attempted rape, which HE DIDN'T EVEN FOLLOW THROUGH WITH. I am NOT saying that rape is the answer to anything, but he didn't know what to do in that situation. He was only used to force, especially since Buffy has always maintained a physical relationship with him.

What Angel did was FAR worse. He was more than ten years older than Buffy when they had sex. In a sense, he DID rape her. He raped her of her innocence, and there was no indication that Buffy even wanted to have sex before it happened.
 
We all have our opinions. Who loved her more or who she loved more? I am Bangel fan because I am a true romantic and whole this thing with Spike was creepy for me. And some of you have this theory that Spike loved her more because he got a soul for her. Let's look at this one more time. If Spike didn't had that chip in his head he would never spend so much time with her and he would never fall in love with her. He never gave up on her but I think she needed a break. Every time Buffy slept with a guy (Parker and Riley) she waked up all scared because Angel wasn't there when she waked up. He left. He left twice. Because that was wright thing to do. Let's face it..we'll never agree who loved her more.

I think Spike was there for here when she got back from heaven.He was the one thing that was close to her.But when she got back,when Angel called,she went.She left all behind her and left to meet him.Our first love.That is nice.But I think Angel is much much more.You know she is not like you and me.She is one special girl and he is one special dead boy.I mean look at her..she is the slayer,the chosen one,she killed the man she love and then he returned from hell.He returned,saved her life and then hugged her.Angel is Angel..not her first boyfriend,he is love of her life.
