I have to agree Spike loved her more. I like Angel better but without a soul He hated Buffy. Wanted to ruin her life. Spike on the other hand fell in love with Buffy as a monster, without a soul and went and got one for her. That to me shows he had a deeper love for Buffy then Angel, but I still like Bangel better than Spuffy.

Are we forgetting season 2?
Drusilla: We're going to destroy the world. Want to come?
Angelus: Yeah, destroying the world. Great. I'm really more interested in the slayer.
Spike: Well, she's in the world, so that should work out.

Spike hated her, just like Angelus did. Ok, Angelus was obsessed with her, but Spike wanted her dead. He only fell in love with her because he spent time around her. And he wasn't half a demon like Angelus was.

Angel did.

Because, as I've stated before, Angel and Buffy (no matter who else they ever have or will ever date/love/etc) are 100%, totally and completely IN love with each other. It's not even fair to compare the two, because I honestly don't believe love is the same with every person.

Spike loved her, Angel loved her, but I don't think they loved her the same way. The 'Spike loved her without a soul' argument is unfair for one reason, Spike was the same person with or without a soul. Atleast I believe that. Angelus was a completely different person compared to Angel. Spike was relatively the same as he was back in his William days, as we learned later on once he got his soul. Besides, Angelus wasn't around Buffy first. He wasn't forced to be around her 24/7 like Spike was. He had that chip in his head, and the demon world wouldn't have him. The Scoobies knew he would prove to be useful in battle and such, so they took him in.

Angelus wanted to kill Buffy because she made him love, feel human. The pure evil in Angel HATED that, so that's why he didn't love her without a soul.

Of course all of this is my personal opinion 🙂

Angel probably wouldn't have, but we'll never know. No chance Spike would fall in love with Buffy if he wasn't chipped.
I personally dont prefer Bangel or Spuffy(xanya's better) but i think to use Spike loved her unsouled when Angel didn't against Angel is kinda unfair.

This really isn't a great argument...

Angelus actually knew Buffy at this point. He had spent close to two years with her.

Spike, on the other hand, had basically just met Buffy. Once he got to know her, he fell in love with her, unlike Angelus.

Thing is though, unchipped Spike, like Angelus, hated Buffy.

Angelus didn't know Buffy. Angelus had not spent two years around Buffy, Angel had.

And I agree with Q-Tip, Spike wouldn't have fallen in love with Buffy without the chip. Stupid chip 😉

Well, then there are Drusilla comments and why she dumped Spike, because when she looked at him all she saw was the slayer (or something like that). It was more than an obsession to kill her at the moment (and why while in Brazil, Would Spike think of the Slayer? ), he tried in S2 and Drusilla asked Spike to kill Buffy for her, so something was there before the chip.

In S2 I don't think Spike hated Buffy, more he saw her as an inconvenience in his plans to restore Drusilla's health.

Stupid chip indeed 😉

I would contest though that Angelus did know Buffy to a certain extent. She certainly wasn't a stranger. He knew her as well as say, we the viewers know her. He watched her and Angel live their lives for two years. He has all the memories that Angel has. He was there, in some way, for all of it.

But Spike was still unsouled with the chip! It was still possible for him to have Buffy killed, without him doing it directly.

And Angel was a part of Angelus. He had all of Angel's memories and emotions, he just chose to ignore them.

I do see what you're saying Kean and agree that Angelus was a part of the whole thing, but I'm far as I'm concerned he didn't know Buffy the way that Angel did and although he shares the memories, for me that's where it stops.

And as for Spike getting someone else to kill Buffy for or instead of him? I just don't even think that would occur to Spike for the simple reason that he wouldn't want anyone else to do it, he'd want to do it himself.

And this is getting off-topic, lol.

That wasn't really an argument. And just like Flannen said, Angelus didn't know her, Angel did. And they are two completly different persons (I dare to say persons). Angel fell in love with her because he saw something in her, he recognised himself there. When he discovered this whole new world, just like she did back then. And the argument Spike loved her without a soul.. well he knew her in season 2 and didn't loved her. I belive he didn't, no matter Joss says. And if he did loved her he was good with his act because of that "I'm gonna kill you" scenario he tried to do. Angel fell in love with her because of what he saw that day, Spike fell in love with her because she was one thing he couldn't have back then. Because he spend time around her, but unlike Angel he never thought it's wrong and that he's hurting her. I think that is the real reason Angel left.. he thought he's hurting her because he couldn't give her life she deserved. He saw how special she is, just he never remembered one fact.. he was special to her too. It's all about do you belive in love at first sight or no.

ubi4soft agrees: remember the Taraka's?

Yup, I do. But that was before the time of chipped-Spike, which I didn't make clear so that's my bad. When Spike thought she was just some pesky other Slayer, he was happy to use the Order or Taraka. But come season four/five and everything that had happened, he wouldn't have wanted, or let, anyone else kill her but him. Unless I'm overestimating Spike's character?

Personally, I don't think so. If he hadn't have been chipped he would have continued to go out of his way to kill her, like he did at the start of season four.

It's unfair to say that Angel and Angelus are two different persons. They are the same people, with different personality traits.

I find it easy to think of them as twin brothers... becuase with twins, you find that one is usually nicer than the other. Except, of course, this is exaggerated greatly.

While Angelus was evil, he still knew Buffy almost as much as Angel did. He knew Angel loved Buffy, and vice versa. Angelus, I think, loved Buffy too. But in a different sense. He loved Buffy like an obsession, not like true love. He stalked her and her friends/family.

Spike's soulless and souled personas are basically the same, only one is less exaggerated than the other. Still, though, he NEVER actually came close to killing Buffy or hurt her to the extent of Angelus.

Considering I'm a Spuffy fan, you'd probably expect me to say 'Spike' straight away, no questions asked...But, that's not the case.
I actually had to sit and mull this over for a while, briefly reading over some other responses, though only vaguely. And I came to a conclusion: I can't decide who loved Buffy the most, because I think they both loved her, each in their own way.

Angel loved Buffy to the point he went to LA, to give her a 'normal life'. Spike loved Buffy to the point he went through trials, painful and hard, to get himself a soul. They both loved Buffy, a lot, and they were both willing to prove that, but I think it's hard, even as a fan who's seen Buffy through everything, and who prefers Buffy with Spike over Angel, I can't really state that one loved Buffy more than the other.

The only share the same body. Their thoughts, opinions and everything else that is going in their little head is different. Yeah, I agree you can compare them to twins. They look the same, but they are not. Angelus knew her weekest points. But I think he forget about her inside.. I think he was trying to repres that memory of Angel's.

I agree Spike never was close to hurting her. Maybe he would hurt her in Halloween, well that was his best shot, and in The Harsh Light Of Day, but then he mentiones Angel's and that gave her the strenght to fight back. I think that's because he didn't know how to hurt her. Well, in my head, he found a way in season 6.

As someone said earlier, the fact that Spike loved her without a soul, but knew he needed to get a soul inorder for her to love him back proved how deep his lover for her went. Hell, that meant the Demon inside him --- which was controlling him, and making his decisions --- was willing to destroy itself by letting the host get its soul back. That's pretty monumental.
