Who was needed the most for their skill (s) in Angel Investigations besides Cordy and her visions and Angel being the champion?

Lorne, his demon contacts and otherworldly contacts + his psychic reading connection to the Powers That Be
Gunn and his muscle
Wesley's Watcher knowledge and demon knowledge + spell enchantments
or
Fred and her smarts?

If I had to chose who would make a trio with Angel and Cordy from your list, it would have to be Lorne. Gunn is unnecessary because Angel provides the muscle, between the three of them I think they could be as smart as Fred. As for Wesley, well he was just the 'bad decision' guy and they could have taken it in turns to be that 🙂

Yeah you really have it in for poor old Wes don't you😉

I'd actually say tht Gunn is the most useful other member. Yes its good to have Lorne's gift, but it seems a bit restricted to relie on it too much. I think Gunn added knowledge of the streets and was smart in his own way. I don't think he was just there to be the muscle. Fred earnt her stripes over time too.

Wes is not my favourite character, that's true 🙂 But I do agree he, Gunn and Fred all bought a lot to the show, but if I could only pick one, for me it would be Lorne because he had a talent no one else had or could develp, whereas the others all had talents that could be learnt by the others 🙂

Wesley - his demon knowledge and ability to make difficult decisions for the greater good.

This ^^
Lorne, meh. If he'd never been introduced I doubt the show would've missed him. I like him just fine, but he's not essential.
Gunn, useful but Angel's the muscle himself as mentioned so not essential
Fred, *shrug*, didn't really bring anything that Wesley didn't have. Except for femininity.

I love Lorne, but out of all of them, he had the less purpose. The show even ackowledges that when they struggle to figure out what to do with him in later seasons. Lorne, when he's just 'The Host', is great. I love him at Caritas but beyond that, he's more a plot device than an actual character. He deserved way more than that, because the performance is great, but he only serves the plot when it's convenient.

Wesley was needed most, followed by Fred, followed by Gunn, followed by Lorne.

Wesley. Angel was the champion, Cordy had the visions and kept them grounded, and Wesley had the book smarts. That's why I think S1 had the best setup -- just three friends, and each brought something different to the table.

Hell, the group needed Wesley a lot more than they care to admit, it's noticeable after his split from AI in S3 when they keep going to him for help.

Wesley, Angel got better at research true, but Wesley had all that training and as a rogue demon hunter had built up a few contacts of his own (including the Host)
