Out of all the actors to play it regularly?
Robia LaMorte
Sarah Michelle Geller
James Marsters
Adam Busch
The Southern babe.
They were also the only actors who really got to play the First and not simply the first pretending to be their own character like Dru or The Mayor.
Well I'd say that Robia was the best by far. She was perfect at making it seem like Jenny, but also more vindictive and cruel. To begin with you do think it could be her ghost wanting revenge, but as it unfolds you see there is something else there under the surface that's not simply vengeful. It's powerful and sadistic in a way Jenny could never be, even against her killer. The scenes with her playing off of David are also fantastic. Such an awesome reversal of their previous dynamic in Passion to see her torture him haha. I also think she sold the sneering arrogance and power of The First better than anyone else.
After her I'd rate James as the next best. Like Robia, he didn't just play Spike, but added an extra, more cold, calculating aspect to him. (He's very good at playing that type of villain. Check out his performance as Brainiac.) Shame he didn't get longer in the role.
The Southern Babe is probably next, though she didn't get long after which Adam was quite good at being sly and predatory around Andrew.
Sadly I'd rate Sarah as the worst. Now I love Sarah as an actress obviously. She's probably the best actor ironically out of everyone who played the First, but her performance I think was a bit cringe. It seemed too mannered and she played it more like a High School mean girl from a 00s movie. I think she was trying to go for the wry, darkly comic type of villain like Claire Kramer had done with Glory, but it just didn't work out.
