Who was the Slayer before Buffy was activated?

I probably know this and forgot, but does anybody know who was the Slayer before Buffy was activated in 1996?

India Cohen was the Slayer before Buffy. You can read about her in Tales of the Slayer and The Book of Fours.

Are the books worth the read? I wouldn't mind getting them and finding out about previous Slayers.

I've only read bits and pieces of Tales of the Slayer, so I can't really speak on them, but Book of Fours is one of the better Buffy novels.

I've read a good few of the Tales of the Slayer and really enjoyed those, I've either forgotten or Haven't read India Cohens one. Must reread those.

Book of Fours isn't cannon is it? I read it years ago and did enjoy it, and I'd read a few of the books, and hadn't liked them, thought the dialogue was trying to hard to sound the same, but I do recall enjoying Book of Fours.

The novels aren't canon but I'm almost positive that Tales is, at least in terms of all the slayers that are featured are acknowledged as being canonically part of the slayer line. India's story is in Vol. III, if memory serves me.

Yeah thats what I though. I think I only read part 1 and 2. Interesting that they kept her the same as the novel, not that, that makes it cannon, but it kinda gives it a bit more... something by acknowledging it.

Tales of the Slayers (the comics) are canon, but Tales of the Slayer (the short story collections) are licensed products put out by Pocket Books with no input from Joss.

India Cohen's story in Tales of the Slayer is "The Code of the Samurai" and is in volume III.
