Around the middle of season 7 you find out who it is.
The princple, Robin or somethings, mum was the slayer, and that is the only reason he hired buffy, because he knew who she was. But what actually happened was Spike killed her and took her coat, in one eppisode he askes spike where he got the coat and after that he works it out and tries to kill him.
I think Wood's mother would've been more likely three or four before Buffy - given that Wood is quite a bit older than her. If his mum died when he was a young boy Buffy would have been about minus-15 to have been called then 😉. I'd go along with India from "The Book Of Fours" until Joss says otherwise. Has it been mentioned in any of the comics?

good point really as if a slayer gets activated as soon as one dies ie buffy, faith, kendra....there should be a slayer between slayer wood and buffy's activation as a baby cannot slay
I agree with Mr Pointy, unless it is otherwise stated in Buffy canon, which is now limited I think to Angel and anything written by Joss Whedon, then the Slayer before Buffy was India Cohen as stated in The Book of Fours. Since Nikki Wood (Robin Woods mother) was killed in 1977 and Buffy was not activated until 1995 there is an 18 year gap, enough for at very least 3 probably more like 5-7 slayers to be activated and killed given their short life expectancy.

Lucy Hanover was a previous slayer but not THE previous slayer, she has been dead for quite some time she died during the American Civil War so mid 19th Century. India Cohen was slayer from June 29 1993 - 1995- at least September by The Book of Fours

Golden & Holder mention Lucy Hanover as a previous slayer, but not Buffy's immediate predicessor. If I'm not mistaken (and, mind you, I frequently am) I think Lucy Hanover was supposed to have been a ninteenth century slayer.
I've heard that Lucy Hanover was first mentioned in an short introductory segment that aired when Buffy episode 1.1 was originally aired. I'd be interested in seeing that intro - it hasn't been broadcast since the original airing of the first eppy and it's not on the Season 1 DVD.

You are quite correct, she was killed in the American Civil War according to The Book of the Fours which puts her death at sometime between 1861-1865 if my information is correct (bare in mind that I am English so American history is not my strong suite.) So mid 19th Century.
Yeah I have heard this too and it is mentioned in some unofficial Buffy guides. Apparently it was only shown once in the US never oversees and talks about Lucy Hanover and another slayer. If anyone can find this and tell me where to get it I will be really appreciative.

Slayer Robin refers to is Nikki Wood, the Slayer that Spike killed in the 70s in NYC (seen in Season 5's 'Fool for Love').

The Primitive (First Slayer)
The first Slayer was a normal girl until she was taken, chained to the Earth, and filled with demon essence by a group of mages. She appears to Slayers who make spirit quests to learn more about their power, and also in prophetic dreams as an inner voice and a source of guidance (at least to Buffy.)
Thessily of Thessilonikki (507 B.C. - 490 B.C.)
A Greek slave born to a single slave mother, Thessily was called at age twelve and lived for many, many years as a Slayer by performing one of those sleights of hand Buffy is so good at: defying a prophecy. After defeating a horde -- or, actually, The Horde -- of vampires at Delphi, she was informed that the Oracles there had predicted her death. She didn't die until ten years later, though; she died of poinsoning and exhaustion at the hands of an army of Persian vampires during a war in 490 B.C. after saving Athens from them.
Diana (38 A.D. - 40 A.D.)
Diana was called at age fifteen. She was surrounded by a close pocket of friends and confidantes: her father, her Watcher, her best friend, and her fiance. Her Watcher was a bit standoffish, and she wondered whether he would care if she died. However, her mistrust was misguided; she was betrayed by her beloved fiance, and her Watcher sacrificed an innocent girl -- Diana's best friend -- in order to save her life. But Diana's friend, Helen, wasn't killed by the vampires who had taken her, mistaking her for Diana at her Watcher's lie. When Diana finally found her way into the vampire's lair to save Helen, Helen made a deal with the vampire. In order to spare Diana's life, she would allow the vampire to sire her. However, things worked badly for everyone: Diana was the first thing the newly risen Helen ate, and Helen went on killing thousands of Slayers and collecting their skulls, driven mad by Diana's "betrayal."
Unnamed Slayer (590 A.D.)
A Japanese Slayer, she was killed by a dragon. After that, her spirit travveled to the Dragon King's undersea palace; an underwater Valhalla for chosen heroes.
Kishi Minimoto (980 A.D.)
Born into a Warrior clan, Kishi seemed suited to be Chosen. But instead of her Watcher informing her of her duties, his brother Miyoto falsely claimed to be her link to the Council and trained her instead.

Brutally murdered by the vampire Lothos, after one of his servants lures her to his lair.

Adja was sent from the past to save the current Slayer -- Buffy Summers -- from the demon Karfarnaum. Though they spoke different languages, they bonded, but in the end Adja died to save Buffy.
Elianne de Shaunde, nee Ward (1320)
Elianne was called at the late age of twenty. Although twenty doesn't seem a particularly late age, it's ancient when most girls start training at fifteen and most Slayers die at twenty-five. Elianne lived in Beauport France, and was one of the many Slayers to fall in love with and marry their Watchers. The two of them had two children, one of which was Sired and became a vampire. Elianne died soon after being called; it is not known as to whether she slayed her child.

Cassia is turned in the line of duty, and becomes the vampire Celina. She hates the living and the dead equally; she continues to hunt vampires but also preys on humans. She comes to Sunnydale to challenge Buffy. After several battles, Celina begs Buffy for eternal friendship and companionship and thus Buffy stakes her and puts her to proper rest.
White Doe (1599 - 1609)
Born Virginia Dare in the New World on August 18, 1587 to the daughter of a Watcher, Virginia's village was attacked by vampires when she was just newly born. Her parents saved her, but couldn't save themselves, so Virginia was raised by the Croatoan Indians, who named her "White Doe" because of her pale skin and hair and her blue eyes. She started training at age twelve, and was important in all clan decisions and hunting parties. For this reason, and Ceremonial Fox -- old man of the tribe -- fell in love with her; she refused his marriage proposals because she was in love with Seal of the Ocean, an Indian boy her age. The old man was scorned; as punishment, he trapped her on the island of Roanoke and turned her into a white doe. The people of her tribe, mourning over their lost warrior, saw the white doe on Roanoke and took it as a sign; they decided to put this white doe as a sacrifice so that the gods would return theirs. Racked with guilt, Ceremonial Fox turned her back into a girl -- right as the hunting party came upon her and Seal of the Ocean's arrow pierced her heart.
Ildiko Gellert (1609)
Ildiko was a Romani girl who travelled with her family by covered wagon until she was called. She moved in with her Watcher after that. She was small, dark, sarcastic, and enjoyed being a Slayer. However, she wasn't one for long. After hearing about the disappearances of many of Elizabeth Bathory's servant girls, Ildiko primped and trained and got a job at Bathory's castle. She observed the torture and murder of Bathory's servants; however, before she could stop them, Bathory found Ildiko snooping around one of her torture chambers. Bathory forced her in an iron maiden, then drained her blood and bathed in it.

Arabian Slayer.
Robin Whitby (1661)
Robin Whitby was a veritable oddity as a Slayer because her battles took place not on land, but at sea. Robin was a sea captain, head of the Carribean craft Neptune's Lady. As women were not allowed to captain boats, and were often not even allowed aboard, Robin had to pretend to be a man in order to keep her position. Her most notable battle was against a monster called a "kraken," which is a real monster, like a giant squid. Many armed, and very large. This battle cost Robin her right forearm.
Unnamed Slayer (?)
A Chinese prostitue is called; she is soon killed by the vampire Lothos.
Carissa Avenhaus (1670 - 1673)
A Dutch girl, Carissa is noteworthy because she was called at the very young age of twelve. She lived for three years as a Slayer, until the fifteen when most girls are called.
Samantha Kane (1684)
Samantha Kane had the misfortune of being a Slayer called during the Salem witchtrials. In Salem. All her dealings with the undead made her conspicuous, and during the hysterical times of the witch burnings, Samantha was recognized as different; instead of being lauded as a hero, she was burned at the stake as a witch by the people she protected night after night.
Yuki Makimura (?)
A skilled Chinese Slayer, Yuki was Sired by the Master. The Watcher's Council was so ashamed that they erased all records of her as a Slayer; nothing much is known before she became evil, ruthless, and undead. A servant to the Master, she served him solely and faithfully until his death in 1997. After hearing of that, she came to Sunnydale to try to raise the Master; she was dusted by Buffy Summers.
Erin Randle (1700's ?)
An Irish Slayer; possibly the Slayer around the time Angelus was Sired. She was killed on Halloween.
Weapon Forging Slayer (?)
An unnamed, weapon-forging Slayer from the eighteenth century has been dreamed by Buffy.
Marie Christine Du Lac (1789)
Born to common peasants, Marie Christine was adopted by the Royal Family of France. Due to her aristocratic uprbringing, when she started slaying, she thought she was supposed to primarily protect the wealthy, as they were more important. While trailing a vampire vigilante named L'Hero, Marie had to dress in street clothes and mingle with the peasants. She began to see peasants as people, too. However, her Watcher was captured by an angry mob of -- human -- townspeople encited by L'Hero and -- this being in the midst of the French Revolution -- she arrived just in time to see him beheaded. His last words were to his Slayer: "Do you see how miserably you have failed in your duties?" After this, she slayed with a completely unbiased hand, even eventually killing L'Hero.

Samantha was from London and is notable in that she died after only ten short months in service.
Miss Elisabeth Weston (1813)
A Welsh girl from Sumersetshire South Wales, when Elisabeth was called, she realized an interesting problem in the Slayers-are-always-girls dogma . . . and, beyond that, being a woman in the nineteenth century. To overcome these limitations, she dressed up as a man. In this guise of "Edward," she lured female victims to back alleys to slay them . . . much as many female Slayers do with male vampires.

Naayééneizghani (?)
After her Watcher was killed by an Indian vampire, Naayééneizghani beat the offending demon into submission and had him lead her to a vampire nest on the Hellmouth. She killed every vampire in the nest, including the one that murdered her Watcher and led her to the nest. However, Naayééneizghani's life was lost in the battle. The land was bought by Richard Wilkins and later turned into -- you guessed it -- Sunnydale.
Marie Siegner (1842)
Little is known about Marie except she was born in the South of France and moved to London after being activated as a Slayer.
Catherine Hogarth (1843)
A Slayer is called from the poor East End of London.
Unnamed Slayer (1845)
The shipyards of Boston, Massachusettes are rife with brutal murders. All attacks stop with the arrival of a quiet young woman into the seaside town.
Pauline Francia Barnard (1864)
An American Slayer from Atlanta, Georgia during the Civil War, Pauline enrolled in the army under the name of Frankie Massey after being called. Little else is known, except that one of her Watchers was killed and she was killed before the second could find her.
Lucy Hanover (1864 - 1866)
Lucy Hanover was fifteen when she was called in 1864. She loved being a Slayer, and not only sought out new and interesting demons to conquer, she cheated death several times. She fell in love with the Erl King Hern the Hunter, leader of the Wild Hunt; the two of them had a child by slighlty unusual means. She was killed by the wanderer of water; however, she refused to let that stop her. She stayed as a spirit on the ghost roads to help lost souls and other Slayers. She has several times taken on human form to help Buffy Summers in battle.

Italian Slayer.
Mollie Prater (1886)
Mollie Prater's Slayer powers resulted in her being ostracized by the inhabitants of the small Southern town she grew up in; she ended up fleeing her friends, family, and fiance and running to the city with her Watcher.
Unnamed Slayer (1893)
A series of brutal attacks results in the death of seventeen settlers in the Oklahoma Territory. These attacks stop after a lady blacksmith passes through.
Grace (1897)
A Slayer from Yorkshire Moors, England.
Florence Gilbert (1897)
When Florence Gilbert arrives in the small town of Virginia City, Wyoming, the string of bizarre, brutal murders end.
Angelique Hawthorne (1897)
This London-based Slayer fought Dracula and Springheel Jack.
Xin Rong (1900)
Spike fights a Slayer during the Boxer Rebellion; he fulfills his obsession and kills her. Later, her family tracks Spike and Drusilla to Prague -- the "idiot mob" Spike complains of -- and wounds Drusilla so badly it takes a whole bunch of funky mojo to get her working properly again.
Arabella Gish (1912)
Twenty-three people are murdered in the Brooklyn Boarding House. These violent, unexplained attacks are stopped completely when Arabella Gish, a student nurse, comes to live in apartment six.
Unnamed Slayer (1922)
This New York-based Slayer was a flapper.
Britta Kessler (1923)
Activated on November 8, 1923; died on November 9, 1923. An active Slayer for only one day, Britta was afraid of the world ahead of her and made her Watcher promise her she wouldn't die alone. He made the promise, but in the battle that took her life, he ran and left her to die alone. Tought karma: when he went to make sure she wouldn't rise, the vampires that killed her locked him in her crypt and watched as the newly risen Britta killed her callow Watcher.
Unnamed Slayer (1927)
Forty-one bodies are found near Chicago's Union Station; the murders stop after the arrival of a young woman.
Unnamed Korean Slayer (1930's ?)
Has a relationship with a demon hunter who is later cursed into becoming Sid the Dummy, who later helps Buffy kill a demon and save Giles.
Rachel O'Connor (1937)
Fights a Djinn in Penn Station in New York City. She is unable to defeat it by physical force, so she tricks it back into its own bottle. She then seals the bottle and locks it in a locker . . . sixty years later, the lockers are brought to Sunnydale High School and the bottle is opened. Buffy and friends send the Djinn back to 1937 where history repeats itself; the Djinn is locked not only in his bottle, but also in a perpetual time loop.
Anni Sonnenblume (1938)
A resident of Nuremberg, Germany, Anni is a Hitler youth -- a member of the Nazi party -- when she is called. Although she slays anyone -- Nazi or Jew or anyone -- who is a vampire, she remains a Nazi and keeps her own little pocket of evil inside of herself.
Sophie Carstensen (1940)
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 17, 1923, Sophia's reign as Slayer ended on September 7, 1940. Supposedly, she was killed by Spike.
Isobel Cortes (1940)
Called on September 7, 1940 after the death of Sophie Carstensen; Isobel was called in London and lasted only minutes in a fight.
Eleanor Boudreau (1940)
Although not much is known about this London-based Slayer's duties before her death, it is known that she was resurrected to kill the Gatherer.
Elizabeth "Betty" (1943)
A Chicago-based private eye, Betty was killed in 1943 by the ancient vampire Hunyadi.
Asha Sayre (1956)
This Florida-based Slayer died in an explosion, sacrificing herself in order to kill many vampires.
Nikki Wood (1977)
The second notch in Spike's twisted headboard, Nikki Wood fought William the Bloody on a subway train in New York in 1977. The only Slayer on record as having a child, Nikki differs from previous Slayers in other ways; Spike describes her as having "more of your (Buffy's) style;" she is a looser, more emotional fighter than most of her predecessors.
India Cohen (1993 - 1996)
Called at the age of fifteen outside her South Carolina home, India retained her girly, giggly persona even after being exposed to the horrors of Slaying. Although she did her best to present a somber, serious face to the Council, India's emotions led her, even as far as to lead her into falling deeply in love with her Watcher. They kept this relationship a secret to the world until India's death at the hands of the mummy-creature "The Wanderer" in 1996. The Wanderer killed her brutally, cutting her to pieces. After that, her Watcher fell into a deep depression and then sought the help of a voodoo priestess, who he thought would help him contact India. However, the priestess was playing the other side, and turned him into a servant of the Wanderer. He was reunited with India -- unfortunately, in battle -- when India possessed Willow Rosenberg's body in order to help Buffy and Faith.
Buffy Summers (1996 - Present)
Buffy Summers was sweet, golden, and completely self-absorbed when she was called. She soon makes a transformation into something hard and dark and not so sugar sweet.
Kendra (1997 - 1998)
Kendra is a Slayer very much in the tradition of the First Slayer, and provides a near opposite contrast to Buffy. Kendra was, from a very young age, separated from society and groomed to kill, just at the very off chance that she might some day be called. Her people regard the calling very seriously, seriously enough that they elevate its importance above extracurricular activities, boys, or even family. Kendra is a highly-skilled but very regimented warrior, and in the long run, her skill was not enough and she fell pray to Drusilla.
Faith (1998 - Present)
If Kendra provides one contrast to Buffy, if she is at one end of the spectre, Faith is the other. While Kendra is a loner by decisions not of her own, while she has memorized the handbook and puts her duty first, Faith has fun with it. She takes time off to flirt, dance, and do bedroom gymnastics with anyone willing. Unfortunately, Faith's a powder keg that's too near fuel; she goes out of control before she's out on the job very long, and it takes a long time and a lot of death and destruction at her hands to get her back.
Kennedy, Rona, Vi, and the other Potentials who survived the battle with the FE
Thanks to a spell done by Willow, these girls (and every other girl in the world with the potential to become a Slayer) were transformed into Slayers.

Yes thank you for that I think there is another slayer in London just prior to Angelique Hawthorne (1897), she fought with Jack the Ripper along with Spike and Drusilla, can't remember her name but its in the book Blood and Fog
