Who was the true slayer?

The hellmouth in sunnydale has been refer to as THE hellmouth. Indicating only one. The reference to a hellmouth in cleveland have been pretty vague to actually existing other than in an alternate reality. If there indeed others than would need other guardians. Though with one in sunnydale gone another could exist now.

With so many calling Buffy the chosen one they forget about Faith. Remember how preacher describes Buffy though he had arranged for someone to try to kill Faith in prison.

Yes and he said that like surprised to see her. First he had arranged to have her killed so knew there was another. Second he didn't know the assassin failed. Didn't he have eyes in the prison she was in.

Well have figured out that I am a fan of Faith. There was much more to find out about her. It is too bad that Eliza didn't do the buffy spin off for faith. She wanted to do tru calling with a character that could think of as Faith once got her life turned around.

We barely scratch the surface of who Faith was. I have some ideas for her tough as nails life. Particularly her attitude towards men. We knew more about Buffy and the gang. Even Giles. Later knew so much about Angel, Darla, Drusilla, Spike.

Both Faith and Buffy are as Faith puts hot chicks with superpowers. However Faith is sexier not in looks but in attitude. She is able to handle herself better. Also despite her attempt to hide it can see emotion just under the surface. It eventually came to the surface when she wanted Angel to kill her. She didn't want to hide or avoid the mistakes had made any longer. Afterwards she became a much more well rounded person than whiney cry Buffy. Buffy who has been seduced by the immortal.

That is what I find sexy about Faith.

I was watching S7 "Conversations with Dead People" on FX last week. There's the part where Holden and Buffy are having their conversation and she fills him in on who/what she is:

Holden: So, all that time, you were a slayer?

Buffy: The.

Holden: "The", like as in "the only one"?

Buffy: Pretty much.

I think that "pretty much" sums up the way Buffy thought of herself but also the ambiguities that the show's "Chosen One" premise had gotten into by that point in the series.

Buffy was not the true slayer. When she died after season 1, the slayer line passed down to Kendra, then to Faith. Remember than after Buffy died after season 5, there wasn't a new slayer. Why is that? Because Buffy isn't "the" slayer, she's a person who still has her slayer powers, but Faith is "the one".

I don't think Buffy nor Faith are the true slayers not now anyway cos of the awakening of the other potentials into slayers. Thus nullifying the once a chosen one dies another is awakend bit.
Although BUffy was the true slayer in terms of the helmouth, as that was her terf.

Are you guys familiar with the arguement that goes, "Perhaps the chosen line returned to Buffy after Season 6" ?

There are a ton of old threads buried about the boards on it. Here's an example from one.

I'll run down the Basics of either arguement for you.

There are 2 sides. The first side claims Season 7 doesn't make sense unless Buffy's death by mystical forces and rebirth in Season 6, resulted in the slayer line once more running through Buffy. It may also continue to run through Faith, but Season 7 tells us the line now runs, at least through Buffy.

The other side of the arguement tells us "No. The slayer line runs through Faith and only Faith until Faith dies. All the inconsistencies in Season 7 when you believe this don't matter, because they were just the writers making mistakes. Joss and other writers have stated in interviews, the line can only run through Faith. That's all that matters.

I'll outline the intricacies of the arguements for you.

Slayer line alters in Season 7 camp.

* Joss made a statement in an interview where he said he didn't understand the problem some people had with Season 7, because it was "didactic in it's clarity". This is important I think, because what Joss appears to be saying is "believe what you see in Season 7"

* It isn't just Buffy who says the line now runs through Buffy in Season 7. It's also Dawn and The First, and it is perhaps implicit in the words or actions of Giles, Anya, Willow and Xander.

* We know the "Faith only" rule to be false, because at the end of Season 7 the slayer line goes all over the place.

* Beljoxa's eye tells us distinctly there is a "disruption in the slayer line".

* Giles tells us the "disruption in the slayer line" was caused by Buffy coming back from the dead. Anya tells us it was a result of the spell her and Tara cast.

* If the disruption in the line does not have something to do with Buffy, then why does the First want to kill Faith, and keep Buffy alive.

* There is no interview, or verifiable statement from Joss, or any of the writers after Season 6, stating the line can only run through Faith. Joss said it pre-season 6. Marti Noxon said it way before that, but I've never seen such a statement that would cover Season 7, nor to I believe one exists. Someone always says they know of one, but they can never produce it.

Only Faith is and can ever be the one true slayer arguement

* One of the writers (they're never sure exactly who) said (they can never tell you where) that only Faith could ever be the real slayer. They said this after Season 6. Don't ask for a link to the information, because if you do you're being a child.

* Everything in Season 7 that seems to suggests the contrary is just writer error.

* The fact that Season 7 makes sense if you believe the slayer line has been corrupted and changed after The Bargaining doesn't matter. It's better to believe the line can only run through Faith just because it is. It doesn't matter if we know the slayer line can be altered from Chosen. Ignore that.

There's also this from a recent interview with David Fury

JOZIC: He also never specified that the last slayer was Buffy"¦

FURY: I talked to him about it when he was writing Fray and I think that he always had the sense that it was Buffy. But the fact that it's left vague in the comics makes it open for interpretation. People can decide whatever they want and Joss can certainly decide it's not Buffy, but at the time he wrote it he believed that it was Buffy. That she was the last slayer before Fray was called. I think it gave Buffy a greater stake in the mythology to know that she was the last one before Fray was called.

But, like I said, that's a story yet to be told.

Well, it's not as though the matter is governed by the laws of physics. 🙂 The mechanics of "succession" were spelled out very clearly in dialogue when Kendra appeared, spelled out very clearly in dialogue when Faith appeared, then not really spelled out following Buffy's death at the end of Season 5. And there was ample chance to do so in the last two seasons, particularly in the dialogue between Buffy and Giles in "Grave":

BUFFY: ...I don't understand ... why I'm back.

GILES: You have a calling.

BUFFY: But it was my time, Giles. Someone would have taken my place. So why?
And Giles is silent

So to me the question of where the "slayer line" went after "The Gift" remains vague. I'm not going to say there ISN'T an answer, only that it was never explicitly given in the Buffyverse story that was broadcast for all to see. And thus the debate among the fans goes on.

And actually, I have no problem with the matter remaining vague to me.

Really? Cool. I love a chance to learn something. Can you show me where? All I can find is that part where the Scoob-airhead-at-the-time (Cordelia), guesses at how Kendra, then Faith came to be the slayer.

then not really spelled out following Buffy's death at the end of Season 5.

No not really, but later in Season 7, in Potential Buffy does tell the potentials the next slayer will be called after she dies. Dawn says the same thing with Xander, Willow and Anya listening. The First tells Buffy that's what's going to happen in Chosen.

Like you said though, it's all vague. Still one guess is as good as another. I agree. I'm happy with that too.

I apologize, nerd4. 🙂 I didn't mean to say it was actually spelled out ironclad terms (physical laws and whatnot), just that there was a deliberate effort to have characters in the story actually explain Kendra's presence-I believe it was in "What's My Line Pt. 2", and then later Faith's presence-in "Faith, Hope, and Trick". The latter explanation being provided, by of all people, by Cordelia. None such was ever provided for what happened when Buffy died for the second time.

Yeah I know the one from Faith, Hope, and Trick. I'm trying to remember the one from What's My Line. Seriously, I'd like to know this. I remember Giles says something like "this is unprecedented", but is it spelled out how Kendra came to be called? I'm not sure it was. Can you show me where? I can't find it.

It's true there's nothing in Season 7 spelling out the Mechanics of how Buffy could come to regain the line, it only says she's the one now.

There are theories as to how that might work, with support from the text. If you click the link above I believe you'll find one.

For some reason I've always seen Buffy as the true slayer. Even though after she died Kendra was called and that was the new slayer line....I've always thought of Buffy as the only true slayer.

I realize that technically I may be wrong....but I've always just seen it that way for some reason. Maybe just cause Buffy was the central character.

Okay nerd4hire, Kimm I found the dialogue from "What's My Line Pt. 2". It's the scene in the library with Buffy, Kendra, Giles, and Willow:

Willow (confused): Hi, guys. W-what's goin' on? (goes to sit across from Buffy)

Buffy: Apparently there's been a really big mix-up.

Giles: Uh, it seems somehow that, uh, another Slayer has been sent to Sunnydale.

Willow: Is that even possible? I mean, two Slayers at the same time?

Giles: Not to my knowledge. Um, th-the new Slayer is only called after the previous Slayer has died. Uh... (realizes) Oh, good Lord! You were dead, Buffy.

Buffy: I was only gone for a minute.

Giles: Clearly it doesn't matter how long you were gone. You were physically dead! Thus causing the activation of the, the next Slayer (gestures toward Kendra).

Kendra: She died?

Buffy: Just a little.

Giles: She drowned, but she was revived.

Willow: So there really are two of them!

Giles: It would seem so. This is completely unprecedented! I'm quite flummoxed. (sits)

Buffy: What's the flum? It's a mistake, she isn't supposed to be here, she goes home! (to Kendra) Look, no offense, I really don't mean this personally, but I'm not dead, and frankly having you around creeps me out just a little bit.

I thought Buffy getting riled up by her new rival was amusing.
