Who you gonna call?

And my response to you is:
Zoolander, Dodgeball, EVERY movie that Will Ferrell is in, every movie that Ben Stiller is in that isn't Zoolander and Dodgeball, Adam Sandler, Role Models, Pineapple Express, Seth Rogen, Steve Carrell... I could go on.
You could go on...but you'd end up with shows even more unrelated to Ghostbusters!

Adam Snader, Ben Stiller and the legendary Will Ferrell each make movies either comically brillaint in their own right, or an obvious laugh at the 'camp' medium.

Why would you possibly compare these two mediums though? In my example, I compared Batman with Ghostbusters...which if you're in the 80's makes perfect sense. Batman was very camp, yet the darker side of both the comic and the movie allowed for it to be transplanted into the future where we actually care about what happens to Mr Wayne...

Ghostbusters...how do you make that relateable? How do you make that current? Dont get me wrong, I actually believe it can be done...it just needs to be retasked... but its not an easy job and I certainly don't misunderstand someone thinking its a heavy task at hand.

If Ghostbusters were to become a joke...a zoolander...a comical farse such as dodgeball...would be a supreme dissapointment. When I watched Ghostbusters as a kid... it was a serious action adventure where the supernatural became real. Batman in its recent formations resulted in the same epic emotions..how will Ghostbusters do that? ...its a challenge.

You highlighted the campness, I merely showed you that in the cinema today, the highest grossing comedies ae full of it.

As for the Batman/Ghostbusters comparison in the 80's, when Batman was remade, there was absolutely nothing camp about it, it was the dark, somewhat disturbing take on the comics, as indeed Batman is a deeply dark story.

When I saw the movies as a child, they were films that made me laugh. I enjoyed them on many levels, but ultimately it was the fact they were funny that I loved them, and the fact they are still funny that I continue to love them.

I am not debating it whether it will be hard to hit the right notes, I am saying that I don't see a reason why someone would say they 'can't help think it'll be bloody awful' when there is absolutely nothing to say that.

IF some of the cast weren't involved, or indeed had lost their comic timing, I would say I was cautious, but the fact is these people that are involved are as good now as they have ever been, some of them have even grown and show a greater aptitude for comedy because they have shown they have marketable range within that often limiting genre.

I'll give a comparison.

Beverley Hills Cop is being remade.
Its not using the same people behind the scenes and Eddie Murphy hasn't been funny since Bowfinger - this film actually worries me.
I am worried that EM will not be able to deliver what he did in the 80's because he has shown himself to be quite stale.

The Ghostbuster group don't have this problem because three of the leads have grown with the times, they have made themselves able to grow into other markets and remain interesting and fresh - and as for Dan Ackroyd, well everyone loves a loveable goof.

I agree with all that...

But do you think Ghostbusters should aim themselves at the 'comedic camp' market or the 'batman' market?

Back in the early 90's when I watched GB, it was one of the first movies I ever watched...and it wasn't camp...it was epic...

Today...shouldn't it be the same? epic? It would be disgusting if it was a Sandler'esk comedy. I think both of us expect more from it than that...we want to be blown away! Comedically as an afterthought... If Ghostbusters 3 doesn't remind me of ghostbusters 1 and 2, then its failed. If Ghostbuster 3 try' s to be camp in the same way that Sandler films utiise 'campness' ...then its failed. If anything, I want GB3 to be as amazing as Batman has proved to be...a VERY tall order. ...Im sure you'll agree.

I agree and disagree.

At the very core of Ghostbusters is a comedy situation.
On top of that is the different levels of comedy - each character represents a different comedic element (Murray as the dry wit - Hudson as the sarcastic down to earth - Ramis as the geek - Ackroyd as the lovable somewhat slapstick goof) which is then built on to give them an actiona adventurey kind of feel, finally hitting the 'supernatural' element.

The movie would fail immediately if it focused on the wrong element as its key - if it denied it is a comedy film.
If it gets that correct, its then in a far stronger place to get the rest (though it could still fail).

BUT I also agree that it needs to choose its humour correctly.
I used Adam Sandler (whom I absolutely abhor on every level) as a means to show you simply that camp is still in the cinema, it was not in any means to suggest that they should emulate his films - in fact, I would walk out mid film if that happened.
The humour of Ghostbusters has always been intelligent, it never patronises the viewer which is its main strength.

As I say, I have full respect for all those involved in this project because I have seen they can deliver and continue to do so.

IF I was replying to someone here who had said 'I am nervous about this movie' and I replied 'why' then your initial point would have been justified, but in fairness, I was actually replying to a comment that I felt was absolutely unwarranted and I do believe I have given a fair enough reason why I think that.

I am, however, saying the same things over again, and the simple truth is we actually agree on everything, I would even imagine you don't believe that it will be 'bloody awful' even if you are potentially cautious, so I don't see a point of me continuing this particular part of the conversation, but please feel free to continue it yourself🙂

Haha, I absolutely agree with everything you said, so it appears, we arn't discussing anything at all...

About what I quoted..

My 'Why?' was to try and provide Bluebirds point of view on why a future adaptation could possibly be 'awful'. The point was valid, a future adaptation of this type runs a very thin line...especially with those of us who 'grew up' on Ghostbusters.

My initial point was along these lines, not someone who was nervous about the movie... someone who wanted to see GB be what it was in versions 1 and 2... epic, humorous...but it appears we agree... not camp.

Point taken, I'm just defending a position that you believed 'unwarranted' as you say. As soon as I heard ghostbusters remake, my mind quickly rushes to how hollywood destroys most remakes... that's hardly a surprise is it? I think thats all that Bluebird was getting at. Bluebird can speak for herself. I just want Ghostbusters 3 to be humorous without being camp. A challenge hollywood is capable of...yet capable of screwing up too!

Woo! Didn't mean to start all this, haha, but you summed it up pretty good there.

Just so we are VERY clear - we're on about a film that had a giant bogey (booger for you Americans) flying around in two movies and in the first one a giant man made of marshmellow, in the sequel the Statue of Liberty, covered in goo, walked through the streets of New York when Jackie Wilson was played, and the day was saved because the whole of New York sang 'Auld Lang Syne'...I'm just saying!

lol...I was about 9 when I first saw GB!
I loved the Ghostbusters movies, and was pretty addicted to the cartoon when I was a kid, which was continued quite nicely in the Extreme Ghostbusters follow up. Modern characters trained by Egon Spengler. Which I was probably way to old to be watching, but hey, i'm a kid, deal with it. 🙂
As for a third movie. I really don't want it to take itself too seriously, It should be fun, silly, camp and kinda scary. Marshmallow men, statue of liberty going for a walk. Slimer eating anything and everything. It should be fun. I think fun is the right term.
If it becomes a dark edgy " the ghosts are symbolic of humanity's dark impulses" kind of crap. I'll be out the door.

This is one of the few sequels I'm really looking forward to, and I hope that it will be good. Introducing new Ghostbusters was really the only way this sequel was going to work well, and I was hoping that there would be at least one female Ghostbuster. Fortunately, the same writing team is working on it, and hopefully they can get a good director. Whatever happens, I'm sure the special effects will be the best of the three, and it would be cool to see updates of the Ghostbusters uniforms and gadgets. I agree that this has to be the right mix of funny and scary--it can't be solely one or the other. What I like most about the Ghostbusters films is that there is that nice balance between comedy and drama. They are mostly funny, but are serious when the situation calls for it. Also, the action sequences are great, and the music is pretty cool. But yes, there needs to be smart, witty, snarky humor. That's a large part of what made the movies so cool.
