We saw it yesterday. I have to say that Joss has a definite talent for writing and directing a helluva final battle scene. Just my opinion here, probably not shared by very many, but I do think that he's leaving the franchise at the right time. The tendency seems to be to keep building on the spectacular special effects, and there's a real danger that pretty soon, that's all that we will have. I like a good action scene as much as the next guy, but Joss seems to have developed a formula of swinging back and forth between soap opera and battle, with not a whole lot of time in between the two. (I did love the scene where everyone tried to lift Thor's hammer, though, especially considering what happened later)

Strangely, when we saw the movie, there were less than a dozen people in the theatre. Even at 2 P M on a Friday, you would expect more people, after all the hype that the movie has been given.

I totally agree. I don't think those movies play to his strength.

That scene and the scenes at the farm were the best. The action scenes, in my opinion, were the worst part of the movie. It wasnt that the movie was bad, it's just that it was, okay. Coming off Winter Solider, I expected more. The trailers teased more, but, you didnt get it.
 
The reason he's leaving the series at a good time I think is because he doesn't want to get trapped by a series and put under the pressure of having to keep producing the goods film after film, and in the process risk his reputation being soiled.

I think he was good for the series because his style of writing added depth, but also a bit more humor and lightness to a genre which was in danger of taking itself too seriously.

Haven't seen it yet. Might be going today. I would say that most of the critics have given it good reviews, whereas the fan response seems in-different. I expect it to be good, but maybe not as good as the first one.
 
Well I went and saw this last week.

And imo It was good, but by god you did feel that Whedon and co were throwing far too many characters into the mix for the plots own good. Yes I know half of the characters were there to help introduce the audience to the new Avengers line up as well as further set up the Infinity Wars, but by christ there were times where I really appreciated that old saying "Less is more".

On the upside it did have a reasonable dollop of trade mark Whedon humor and James spader gives good villain (god I adored him on Boston Legal) but having a CGI fest on legs imo doesn't do the business quite as well as a real life-on-the-studio-floor type actor bouncing off your cast (oo-err). Basically what I'm saying is I thought this idea didn't work as well as having Hiddleston snarking away as Loki.

Loved Robert Downey JR's performance as Tony Stark as imo he always steals the show for me. God he IS the Avengers imo. 😀

All in all I don't regret seeing this, I just wish they're reined the action back a tad (dear god the fight scenes!) and Whedon had also reined in his well trodden tropes, nearly all of which were all on display in this.

I think the plot and character building really suffered because of that. I mean, if you had actually had some quality scenes with Quicksilver you might have cared that he died. It was just emotionless. At least to me.

I was going to say that he (Spader/Ultron) wasn't in it enough, but maybe you're right and it not being a 'real' person lessened it. He was very good, but not very villainy, and he seemed under-developed too.

When I was watching it last week I thought that as well.. I thought it actually would have been a better movie had IT been two parts as well. But after it settling into my head for a week, I actually think if they didnt have the fanservice moment of the Hulkbuster suit, and spent that time building the twins and their relationship with Ultron it would have been a better movie. We didnt need the Hulkbuster. Even if Hulk spitting out the tooth was one of the best parts of the movie.
 
Yeah the Hulkster suit scene wasn't necessary, but as you say great fun though. Love Stark's "Sorry". 😀

Ha. Yeah. That was the best line in the movie I think. The look on both their faces.. the original cut of the movie was over three hours long- I dont think there is any way I could have sat through that. Oh god, the Hulk and Black Widow scenes were horrible. Natasha and Banner were good though..
 
I found their relationship to be a wee bit unconvincing really. I thought she was going to get closer to Hawkeye but Whedon obviously had other plans. 
I just found Hawkeyes stepford wife and kids a weird idea. The whole set up smacked of Riley part two to me. 😀

but at least it wasnt just unintentionally comic.. the rubbing of the hands and what not. It just was supposed to be touching I guess, just made me laugh. Not in a good way.

Yeah, that too.. that was an easy excuse to dismiss the sexual tension between he and Black Widow in the last picture. It was an easy retcon to move Black Widow onto Hulk. And now that Hulk is out of the picture for the next three years, her schedule is free to entertain Winter Solider.

"Riley part two" I never thought about that but you are exactly right.

I do think it's funny that Whedon wanted to add Loki but they thought that that would make it have too many characters. Really? Really?

Yeah, but many times Whedon just doesn't get it imo. He's too busy giving us stuff he thinks we want, but don't. I'd rather have another brief appearance from Loki rather then what we got.
 
Well, I mean, seriously.. we got how many cameos? War Machine, Falcon, Peggy Carter, Idris Elba, Skaarsgard, Maria Hill... I forget anybody? Adding Loki would have been too many.. lol.
 
I saw it today, and I was super excited. It was a good movie, not as good as the first imo but I still enjoyed it. A lot of good moments, and some funny one liners.

That's it! It's Riley all over again! But with a better actor. I thought it was good to give Hawkeye more screen time and development, but then it's like, okay so he's supposed to have had this family the whole time. Like when does he have time to go back home and have all these kids. And then poor wife, having to worry. And Natasha knows about it, but again there's no hint at that in the first movie cause there's a "will they/were they/won't they" thing. But I did like his line at the end to Scarlet Witch about stepping up and being an Avenger.

Yea she even has that line to Fury at the end about did he know when he sent her to get Banner in the first movie. Having recently seen the first movie, and knowing about this love thing, I could see it but for some reason I wasn't buying their chemistry in this one.

Yea it was a lot of people in this. Not to mention Fury and that asian doctor chick (Helen?). I do always love seeing Peggy Carter, whether it's in the movies or on her show, but it was a waste I think because it doesn't really go anywhere? I mean I get that Cap realizes that he needs to get over her and move on, but how did he get that from that fear/dream sequence?

I think my problem with it is there's a lot of jumps or gaps. Like when did Widow start being able to "lullaby" the hulk? When did they start taking out Hydra bases? (Probably cause the SHIELD show's not doing it). Retconing Hawkeyes secret life, and Widow and Banners relationship. I do like that she's pretty bold in her statements of wanting him and he is kind of just shy and doesn't really know how to react to it. And then not enough character development with Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch was handled a bit better but only cause she can do more with her powers. I won't go on a rant about comparing the two Quicksilver characters but his powers I don't feel were utilized as well as they could have been.

I agree the hulkbuster scene was maybe a bit too much, I kind of was waiting for it to end. But it was key for Banners choice and decision of leaving in the end. I have no complaints about Captain America, Tony Stark or Thor, maybe wanted more Thor, but I love Cap, he might be my favorite Avenger. I think I want him and Thor to have more of a bromance or something, I just want more scenes with them together. lol. They felt like they just worked well together (has nothing to do with their looks I swear😉). I think I might go see this again in theatres because it was kind of dense and had too many characters I couldn't follow everyone all the time. But still a very good movie, I would rank it under Cap 2.
 
Glad to see I'm not the only one that thought the Hawkeye's family was weird, and I didn't get where the relationship between Black Widow and Hulk had come from. Did love the hammer scenes, both the guys all trying to pick it up then the Vision just handing it to him and the guys talking about it.

Good that's there a small continuing plot going through the movies of the crystals, but this one didn't feel like it continued on with the previous ones, as well as the others did.
 
And dare I say I found Hawkeyes wife situation verging on the old 'bare foot and pregnant' kinda thing. Having the kids and another on the way and living in (dear god) a farm house was just too convenient/old fashioned for my liking. Anyone would think the guy was 60.

If over an hour was cut out of the original draft then is it any wonder everything felt disjointed/rushed.
 
Cant say I'd have been bothered one way or another really as I've always found him to be really dull.

That whole thing just seemed like an Angel/Buffy rip off, where she's telling him that she loves him, and he says that he's afraid of what might happen if things went too far and he lost control. (Would he become Bannerus, or Hulkus?) right up to the part where he leaves after the last big battle because he knows that it's the best thing for her.

Actually, if there were going to be any sort of romance involving Natasha, I would have thought that, after how close they became in "The Winter Soldier," it would have been with Cap, which would also fit in with the "New Avengers" animated movie, where one of the characters is the son of "the soldier and the spy."
