Really? I just don't really see what is wrong with having different genres of music. Sure, people like to come down hard or dismiss certain genres, but ultimately, I don't see how attribution of names like Pop, HipHop or Rock can hurt music. Not in 2012.

Well, maybe I phrased that wrong. I see genres and I love having different ones...and there are some that I prefer over others, but I won't dismiss an artist simply because their music is of a specific genre. That's what I meant. That if one truly loves music, they should be willing to give anything a chance, regardless of what name is labeled to it. For instance, I have a friend who will not listen to rap. At all. If she hears the beginning of a rap song, any rap song, she flips out and wants me to turn the radio or channel. That's crazy to me. I embrace different genres of music. Like if someone asked me to pick a favorite...that would be impossible. I might prefer Rock to the others but there are so many sub-genres of Rock. I also really enjoy Disco haha.

I call myself an equal opportunity listener. :)
I feel a little annoyed that Taylor Swift has been given that title by almost every big newspaper in the country and yet she's not on this list.

It's a sorry state of affairs if any of these are the "voice" of our generation. I don't think any of these women are positive role models, especially not in comparison to many other people.

If you mean "voice" in a musical sense, I can't think of any that are particularly inspirational, or have changed music in a positive way.

Yeah I agree. That said, they are talented in their own way, I just don't think they're representative of my generation as a whole. It's not like they compare to someone like Madonna who really was an icon in the 80s. Plus none of them are really my cup of tea music wise.

If I had to pick then I'd probably go with Beyonce, but only because of her Destiny's Child days. I remember growing up and listening to DC constantly on roadtrips on my walkman, back before I got a better music taste 😛 (for me anyway, not judging anyone else's).

I'd be going more towards Kurt Cobain for my generation, or maybe Thom Yorke from Radiohead.

hahah I remember listening to Destiny's Child on my walkman...I'd like to pick Kurt I just feel like he isn't really from my generation but...who cares ;)
My main role model growing up was Sarah Michelle Gellar (undoubtedly the most influential celebrity for me) but if I had to choose a singer it would be U2.

Part of the problem here I think is that for the past thirty or so years there have been so many choices in music etc. that I don't know if you can actually generalize who speaks for the generation Gen Y or Gen Text. I know many people in their twenties of whom Britney Spears was a huge influence but I know an equal amount who ignored her and stuck with more under the radar artists. As far as artists Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, they were marketed at people who were born after the seventies and eighties so a lot of us are too old to really personally connect with their music.

Christina = always in Britneys shadow
Lady gaga = flash in the pan
Beyonce = Legend
Mariah = total joke of a person.

The voice of our generation is obviously Kanye West, he even says so himself.

zobothehobo I think Taylor is a lot bigger in the US than she is in Europe though. At least in scandinavia. All the people on the list is really, REALLY big here, and Taylor can't really compare to them. Not saying she isn't good, but from my viewpoint she isn't as big international.

I voted Beyonce! I think her and Lady gaga is going to be the ones people remember when they think of this generation as far as mainstream music goes. Among others who weren't on the list. 🙂

I agree about Taylor Swift; she isn't a major star here, either.

I know that... I mean, I know she's bigger in the US. it just took me by surprise that's all
Hard to say. I'd have to get a solid definition of what "the voice of our generation" means. All are talented singers with amazing voices.....but there are so many other variables that might influence someone's vote; likability, personality, overall performance. If I had to base my decision SOLEY on their voice, I'd say Christina.

well, we can't truly judge them on their personality...ya know? so judging them solely on musical talent is fair.
I don't even think they're talented, and it really bothers me when people think these over autotuned women are anything to do with how we live.

They live for the media. They fill one of two requirements: attractive, or quirky. Even Adele falls into this.

They haven't changed anything for the better. They haven't stood up against the capitalist music industry, they haven't helped non-European people to get into music, they haven't supported anything.

They honestly are shit. Yeah, I said it.

Want to look to someone inspirational?

Look to the woman on your doorstep who is struggling to get by. Look to your grandmother who has lived through World War 2, look to your friend, who hugs you when you're down.

Need to look up to a celebrity for it to matter?

Then look up to Katie Piper, she was a TV present who had acid thrown in her face, and has had to live an incredibly difficult life.

Beyonce, Mariah Carey and whoever else means absolutely nothing.

Their music might have inspired other people though, regardless of whether you think they're inspirational. Nothing wrong with looking up to a musician if you can connect with them

Um how isnt Lady Gaga, Xtina, Mariah and Beyonce arent talented? Have you heard their voices? they're amazing

---------- Post added at 05:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:18 PM ----------

Also

Lady Gaga has done tons of charities, and is the reason why Gays and Lesbians are able to go into the Army without the Don't Ask, Don't Tell bullcrap. Gaga also started a stop Bullying foundation and her own foundation for her fans who are bullied.

Mariah has done tons for charities. Beyonce and Xtina have given so much to the people in poor countries (Africa etc)

Lady Gaga is awful, talented for being "alternative", favoured for being sexual. Aguilera fairly similar. I admit she can vaguely sing. Mariah Carey provides ridiculous amounts for her children, and Beyonce does the same. Regardless of how much they make, it's disgusting. They're more autotuned than they are talented, and the talent they have is focussed into money making.

Um autotune is Ke$ha's music. Have you listened to "4" by Beyonce that is hardly what I call autotune like not at all

have you heard "Music Box", "Emotions" hardly autotune Mariah writes, produces and composes all of her music so does Gaga. Gaga sings live, plays the pianio 24/7, composes all of her music and produces them.

Idk what music you've been listening to to think that Beyonce/Mariah Carey/Xtina and Gaga are autotune. Your opinion but I'm a casual Bey/Mariah fan and trust me no autotune on their voices.

Beyonce's new album "4" is pure R&B and Raw

It's not just autotune that bothers me. In fact, that's not even half of it. Beyonce had her kids name trademarked.

Everything's a business to them.

Mariah is a total diva, they're not good people at all.

They don't use their notoriety for the positive.

I'm not sure about you guys' generations but the voice of my generation for me would be between Joe Strummer (The Clash), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) and Bruce Springsteen 🙂

Wow, you really hate all of them, don't you? It sounds to me like you're making a lot of assumptions. Do you know them? Do you know if they don't give to charities or use their notoriety for positive? Beyonce for one has done a lot of good charity work. http://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/19-beyonce-knowles

Yes, they may not be the best role models in the world in your opinion.....but calling someone else shit or saying they are bad people is just plain mean. 🙁

I despise what they represent. Them being okay with what they represent makes them bad people.

I never said they're bad people, I assume they're as money hungry as anyone else, to be honest. Beyonce may have done a lot of charity work, but she also trademarked her daughters name.

They're not inspirational in the way Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, Aretha Franklin were. These people made you feel like you could be someone. Not like you could just make a bit of money and get in a magazine.

And no, I'm not making a lot of assumptions. Anyone who thinks celebrity is anything other than selfish, should stop and think for a second.

I think that's a bit unfair really. I agree with the sexualising/quirkiness part but if you've heard Lady Gaga sing live with just her and a piano she clearly is very talented. Same with Beyonce, it's just the production on top of their songs that drags it down in quality imo.

And this is coming from someone who dislikes this kind of music.

This may be so, but it doesn't make it a voice for our generation. Rather, it's anti how society should be. We don't need that. We need people that help each other, "celebrities" who reflect real life, and are prepared to invest in it.

Vaguely talented? Seriously?

I've been a Christina fan since I was 12, I've seen her live, I own everything she has ever recorded; she is not autotuned.

Might not be your cup of tea but this is her off the cuff, randomly belting out a song. Just because she can. Not autotune.

I get that you don't like these women, or their music, fair enough. Each to their own, but each and every one of these women are incredibly talented individuals. You don't have to like it, but to say that their talent doesn't exist is a bit much.

And I have no idea what that women being attacked has to do with these women, or how being inspired by them is a bad thing.

As for the charity work, I can only speak on Christina because she is the singer I am invested in, but she has been working for years with women's charities, particularly those which deal with domestic violence (which she was affect by in her own childhood), she has worked with End World Hunger and Amnesty International, most recently with Hope for Haiti, The Red Cross and Unicef. She is involved many wildlife and conservationist organisations. As well as that she has been a heavily involved LGBT charities and human rights campaigns. She's also politically conscious, getting involved in the "Declare Yourself" campaign during the last American Presedential Election.

So, what has she done? More than me. More than anyone I know. And I'd wager you could pull up the same stuff for Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
