This may be so, but it doesn't make it a voice for our generation. Rather, it's anti how society should be. We don't need that. We need people that help each other, "celebrities" who reflect real life, and are prepared to invest in it.

Oh I'm not saying musicians on the level of Gaga are voices of a generation at all, as said in my OP. I don't think there's celebrities should be faced with that kind of pressure though, music is about escapism from the real world and about communicating emotion with other people in a way that may not change the world or stop global warming but it can make someone feel like their life is worth living. Plus it can foster ambition in people to try and be as successful as they are or as confident (something which Gaga does very well for her fanbase).

If, for some reason, people think that the music of Beyonce or Gaga can do that for them then more power to them imo. Morrissey's music has helped me more than anyone else has in the past few years on such a level that's hard to really express. He's no saint, far from it depending on what you read, and he may be far removed from society, but his music speaks on a less superficial level that anyone can relate to and that's what matters.

Vaguely talented? Seriously?

I've been a Christina fan since I was 12, I've seen her live, I own everything she has ever recorded; she is not autotuned.

Might not be your cup of tea but this is her off the cuff, randomly belting out a song. Just because she can. Not autotune.

Christina joins in on 'I'm Goin' Down'. - YouTube

I get that you don't like these women, or their music, fair enough. Each to their own, but each and every one of these women are incredibly talented individuals. You don't have to like it, but to say that their talent doesn't exist is a bit much.

And I have no idea what that women being attacked has to do with these women, or how being inspired by them is a bad thing.

As for the charity work, I can only speak on Christina because she is the singer I am invested in, but she has been working for years with women's charities, particularly those which deal with domestic violence, she has worked with End World Hunger and Amnesty International, most recently with Hope for Haiti, The Red Cross and Unicef. She is involved many wildlife and conservationist organisations. As well as that she has been a heavily involved LGBT charities and human rights campaigns. She's also politically conscious, getting involved in the "Declare Yourself" campaign during the last American Presedential Election.

So, what has she done? More than me. More than anyone I know. And I'd wager you could pull up the same stuff for Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

Women getting attacked? What? It has no connection.

I don't think Xtina is talented, I think she warbles, she's a better singer than me, but I don't think she is a good singer.

also if Beyonce, Xtina, Mariah etc doesnt inspire people or people should look up to them? Then that's the same case for the cast of Buffy and Angel. What have they done to inspire people to become an actor? I dont remember them doing a bunch of charties etc

They don't inspire me to be actors. I appreciate the show for what it is, not because of the actors.

Fair enough. But a lot of what you said is implying that she has absolutely no worth whatsoever. I think is incredibly harsh and unfair. She may mean nothing to you, but there are plenty of people who feel very differently.

Up above you mentioned Lennon, Aretha and Sinatra as making you feel like you could be somebody. Well that what Aguilera is to me. And while we are talking about money makers, you would be hard pushed to find three artists who made more than those three.

Feel free to view her highly. It's not as though she's of no worth, of course she is and I didn't imply she wasn't, she is but in the way that everyone is. Everyone is someone, and therefore important. But for me Xtina, is not in terms of culture, singing, or celebrity.

I'm not bothered in the least that you don't like her or her music, it isn't for everyone. By all means, hate her music. But I just thought saying "they are not nice people at all" was unfounded claim to make. Even then I didn't know what it had to do with their singing ability. I mean, Sinatra was in bed with the Mob, but he is still an untouchable legend, musically.

But we'll leave it there, no need to flog a dead horse.

and someone would say that about John Lennon or Bob Dylan.

So you shouldn't have a problem with my opinion.
Cast No Shadow These singers aren't my first choice when it comes to music either. But I think they inspire a lot of people - christinas "beautiful" has made a difference in peoples lives, so has gagas "born this way". People find strenght in different things. It's not all black and white - you can trademark your kids name and still inspire people to be independent and strong. You can think a burn victim AND lady gaga is inspiring. The 2 doesn't have to contradict each other.

Also Im not trying to be ignorant or anything but what inspiring thing have the Beatles or John Lennon have done in their prime? back then imo they were just a typical boy band.

They kind of invented Pop music :) But the point is, you can be inspired and find worth in the Beatles AND today's musicians. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Please, quote me saying that they're not at all nice. I never said that.

Fact is, I'm allowed to dislike them, find them uninspiring, wish that the future generation doesn't worship them. Hell, I hope, more than anything the future generation aren't inspired by them.

I'm allowed that. People should deal with it. It's my opinion. Don't like it? Then...don't like it. It's cool.

.

There you go. I bolded the specific part.

It's not just autotune that bothers me. In fact, that's not even half of it. Beyonce had her kids name trademarked.

Everything's a business to them.

Mariah is a total diva, they're not good people at all.

They don't use their notoriety for the positive.

That doesn't mean that they're not nice. Being nice is part of the business they're in. I'm sure they're very nice to people. They probably give money to certain charities. However I don't think they are good.

Feel free to worship false idols, and be inspired by people who adore money and fame.

I'd rather be inspired, and I'd rather my generation be voiced by my grandfather, a war veteran. Be voiced by the lady down the street, who lost her husband. Be voiced by my neighbour who did a marathon for breast cancer. I'd rather the voice of my nation was the average person who was willling to go the extra mile.

Not Beyonce. Not Gaga. Not Mariah. Not Christina.

Why do you think it's an either/or thing, out of interest?

To make that kind of statement is to commit a logical fallacy; it's perfectly possible to draw inspiration from both areas of life. You can be inspired by any number of people at one time.

Obviously it's your opinion but to use an either/or statement to degrade the status of other 'inspirational' people does make your argument inconsistent.

How is my argument inconsistent?

I've never once instructed anyone to do anything.
I've simply expressed what I'd rather do, and what I'd rather not do.

I never said, "you should" "you must", "I wish you would", "It would be better if you did"

You're the one making assumptions, I would never preach.

I've said what's better for me.

Follow what you want to follow, I've never said anything less.

Yes, but the way you made your statement did make it appear to be a choice of 1 out of 2 options. Which is a logical fallacy. It doesn't matter if you weren't instructing anyone, whenever anyone makes a claim about something they think there are certain logical 'rules' that come into play in order to consolidate what they're saying.

There's no need to get defensive, I'm not attacking you for it or making assumptions. I'm simply pointing it out.

I wouldn't call any of those listed the voice of my generation. However I think that out of those, Christina Aguilera has the best voice by far.

I never made it appear to be a choice at all. I stated my point of view, which is obviously inconsistent to many.

That entire post suggests otherwise, but I shan't bother now. Not worth the bother.
