Who's the voice of our generation?

If you believe so, you should be decent enough to state why. Perhaps my intentions were different to how you interpreted them? Perhaps not. Perhaps you'll never know, because you decided to be rude, and not consider me worth the bother.

How about the millions of people who work everyday to make our generation? We're all the voice of it. We make it worth living. The person who puts a smile on your face first thing in the morning, the person who delivers you your lunch, the person who tells you that you've done something right.

I couldn't care less if the point of this thread was someone musical, the "voice" of this generation isn't someone musical.

Wow, thing's are getting pretty heated, huh? Remember, music is subjective. You express your opinion, value other people's opinions, and move on. It's not that serious. 😛 As far as my generation, generation Y, I would consider Britney Spears. Like her or not, she's iconic. She was my entry into the music world, believe it or not. She's extremely influential, especially in her prime. Because let's face it, music changed as soon as she stepped on the scene. (For better or for worse, that's up to you.) Sure, my musical taste have changed drastically since I was a young grasshopper, but I wouldn't have had some of my most precious memories if it wasn't for her.

So, I may have Pink Floyd, and Rolling Stones, and Zeppelin all on my Ipod, but scroll upward to the B section and you'll find Ms. Spears. Why? Because I can. 😉

And no, I'm not making a lot of assumptions. Anyone who thinks celebrity is anything other than selfish, should stop and think for a second.

You are assuming that these people are not good people...you don't know them, so it has to be an assumption. I am not sticking up for them personally, they could be awful for all I know...I just don't like generalizations. I mean, you truly believe that all celebrities are selfish? How can you know that? Haha I'm not mad, I'm not trying to start an argument, I just like to discuss things 🙂

Also, I agree that society is just too obsessed with celebrities, that is where the real problem lies. I hate that my mom knows who every frickin celebrity is but she wasn't aware that Bangladesh isn't in the middle east. Ugh.

That doesn't mean that they're not nice. Being nice is part of the business they're in. I'm sure they're very nice to people. They probably give money to certain charities. However I don't think they are good.

Feel free to worship false idols, and be inspired by people who adore money and fame.

I'd rather be inspired, and I'd rather my generation be voiced by my grandfather, a war veteran. Be voiced by the lady down the street, who lost her husband. Be voiced by my neighbour who did a marathon for breast cancer. I'd rather the voice of my nation was the average person who was willling to go the extra mile.

Not Beyonce. Not Gaga. Not Mariah. Not Christina.

I thought that this question was solely about who is the voice of our generation...musically? If it had been, "Who do you look up to?" or "Who is the overall voice of our generation in terms of how much they have contributed to charity and the world" well, then I would have also refused to pick anyone on this list. No one said that these people were god or anything, you know? It was just a question about who we believe is the most inspirational with their singing talents...that's how I saw it. I jokingly chose Beyonce because she "rules the world" haha. Kind of an inside joke with myself. I need help. Truthfully, this question kind of confused me. I mean, what makes someone the voice of a generation? Is it how popular they are or how many records they have sold? Or is it who has inspired the most people, musically speaking?

For sure. 🙂 I suppose I was thinking who people vote for could be influenced by wether they like the celebraties personality or not, even unconciously....but really, no one could ever completely agree on the answer to this question and they don't have to! lol 🙂

So did I. I took it as this thread asking who is the voice of our generation vocally. When the issue of role models came up I backed Christina simply because her music has been motivating to me, in my day to day life.

But if we are talking political and cultural voices of our generation, then is a vastly different conversation. One that I would not include any of the women mentioned in the poll.

Musical or inspirational 'voice' of our generation (whichever generation you belong to) is in the end a personal opinion and we're all allowed to find the idols we see fit/have meaning to our lives.

Please try not to get personal in the matter of whether you prefer a famous idol/or an unknown idol. You may have your reasons, but so does the person you're talking to. Let's all try to respect that we may not know where the other person is coming from and that their opinion is valid even if we might disagree.

Mariah Carey got my vote. Not because I like her the best out of artists listed but because she became Colombia's highest selling artist in only a few years time, she held the longest running singing on Billboard's top 100, one of her singles was named Billboard's "song of the decade", she was named the best selling female artist of the millennium in 200 and to this day she remains one of the best-selling music artist of all time. She's not my cup of tea but there is no denying her success.

I don't like any of those four. I find that people just saying their names fill me with embarrassment. For them and for the people that like them. Unfortunately this is a discussion about personal taste and opinion, and I don't expect my opinions to change anyone else's.

I think there should have been an 'other' category as I think there are some fantastic female vocalists that are superior the ones listed but have been left off as they have not had as much money spent on their appearance, their publicity and their music.

Like who? I think Patty Griffin has the most stunning tone and control in her voice that I have ever heard, but I don't think I could claim her for my generation.

Uh... I like Les Miserables and The Beatles and Elvis. I don't really listen to modern music, because it has always seemed kind of wacky to me. I don't know... Maybe it's just me, but I like the older tunes. I'm also not very musically adventurous. I mean, there are probably some fantastic musicians out there today, but I don't listen to them.

Wow, what a heated discussion!!

First, all of these women have talent. I recorded a song, and jeeez did I suck! It's hard to sing. My guitar sounded pretty good, but my voice? It was terrible. lol

But none of these musician say anything to me. To me their music is completely fake, without substance or meaning. It's all done for money.

For me, the voice of my generation is Joey Cape. I know that [MENTION=7407]caitaintdead[/MENTION] is probably the only person here who knows him. He's the lead singer of Lagwagon, a personal Facebook friend, and someone I can actually drink a beer with at a concert. His words inspired me like no other, and have for almost 20 years.

Before that, it was The Smiths. They captured the loneliness and despair of life that we all feel better than any other band I've heard.

I find the worshipping of musical idols to be silly. I feel that most of them are a bunch of frauds, with few exceptions (like Joe Strummer). I don't think they do anything without a publicist and photographer there.
