Who's Your Favorite Cowboy?

I can't be the only person here who loves what my dad use to call "the ol' shoot-em-ups," so who's your favorite tall in the saddle, strong but silent pistol packin' wrangler?

For me, it has to be the legendary Duke, but Gary Cooper and Clint Eastwood are also near the top of the list. And who could ever forget Hoppy, Gene, and Roy?

Riley! No, I'm kidding. I'm not big on Westerns, but my favorite one is Angel and the Badman. Which I suppose makes John Wayne my favorite cowboy.

I loathe John Wayne. Well, the only movie I've seen of his is The Searchers, but I hated it, and I hated him.

I actually don't much like westerns at all. But I'll have to go with Clint Eastwod, 'cause who DOESN'T like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly? Spaghetti westerns are so much more fun than regular westerns!

I think I´ll go with Michael J. Fox as "Clint Eastwood". Is that ok?

I watched some shows/movies then I was little but I pretty much only remember Bonanza (mostly the theme music) and "How the west was won" (1979) But we pretended to be cowboys all the time. But I really don´t have a favourite so I´m standing by my first answer. Hilarious.

Personally, I'm not averse to Westerns, although I never really could get into the older ones (the vehicles starring the likes of Roy Rogers, Lash LaRue, et al).

I'll have to say that Clint Eastwood's many cowboy portrayals (primarily his star turns in the so-called Spaghetti Westerns) are my faves.

Yul Brynner comes a close second. (He was even cool as a friggin' android cowboy).

When I was a kid, our local tv station played the old western all day long. Men like Bob Steele, Eddie Dean, Sunset Carson, Wild Bill Eliott, and of course the singing cowboys, Roy, Gene, and Rex. (A little trivia for you: the first singing cowboy was none other than "Singing Sandy," also known as John Wayne. (Someone else furnished the voice. Wayne only lip synced.)

None, because I pretty much loathe Westerns. When I was younger, every summer I'd spend a month or so at my grandparents. My grandfather controlled the TV, and he switched back and forth between two stations, mainly: the History Channel, and the Western channel, and then he'd go and watch shows like Gunsmoke and other Western series on other channels! I grew to absolutely hate them, most of them were boring, and even at age 7 I thought it was ridiculous how when someone was shot, no blood showed and they slowly fell to the ground clutching themselves...lame.

Plus whenever I watch them I feel like taking a shower and drinking lots of water. *shrug*

Well all of the above are good. And White Avenger you named a lot of the hard-core cowboys but I have a very different list.
Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach, Lee Marvin (toughest SOB ever!), Audie Murphy (highly decorated veteran in real life), Jimmy Stewart, Alan Ladd (even if they had to dig a trench for the lead actress, in Shane,to walk in because she was taller), Ernest Borgnine, Steve McQueen and what the hell Kevin Costner.

In what growing a mustache!? Sam's a good cowboy, I'll give you that. But Lee was the cowboy's cowboy from the bad ass Liberty Valance to the drunk Cat Ballou (c'mon he even got the horse to lean against the wall) Lee played it all.

Was never a big fan of westerns so I'll have to say Mal Reynolds. He's the closest to a cowboy type hero that I've really followed on either television or in the movies. That said, I've been meaning to check out Deadwood, so that may change.

Deadwood's addictive. Have you seen the mini-series Lonesome Dove? I think maybe anyone who can get into the one can get into the other.

I haven't seen Lonesome Dove, N4H. Although like I said, westerns have never really been my thing. I've had a friend of mine on at me to try Deadwood for ages though and she is usually spot on with suggesting new shows for me to watch so I'm going to check it out. If it's as addictive as you say then I'm not going to be sorry.

Did it run for just the two seasons? I'm sure I read somewhere that it was cancelled without a proper ending, which is the only reason I've been holding off watching it. Getting a bit tired of loving series that don't have a decent conclusion. I'm still livid over Earth 2 and Space Above and Beyond! 😉

Well don't quote me on this, but the way I remember hearing about it, it was one of those canceled, then brought back briefly situations. In any case they appear to have seen it coming, because the end is a wrap-up, however it's an Angel, or Sopranos kind of wrap-up that's not fully satisfactory unless you like that kind of open-ended thing. I didn't like it.

There's used to be talk of a Deadwood TV movie, or mini-series planned. I don't know where that went.

Deadwood received wide critical acclaim,[1] won eight Emmy Awards, and one Golden Globe, and consistently drew high, though not spectacular, ratings.

Although there were plans to conclude the series with two special made for TV films, the plans have yet to come to fruition. Several of the series stars have since commented that the series is now unlikely to return. As of 10 October 2007, however, HBO has reasserted the possibility of the two movies, declining to support the notion that the show is dead.
