Whose leaving was the most painful?

Many characters on Buffy and Angel left the show, or moved to the spinoff, for many reasons. Which character's leaving did you find the most hard to take? And how did you react when you found that out?

Angel. That broke my heart. I knew it's the best thing for both of them, but that scene was so beautiful, but yet so sad. No words, just feelings floating in the air.

Maybe if Cordy had her proper goodbye that would also be hard..

Second one is Oz.. again, beautiful scene, but so sad..

Oz, I was so upset when he left. He was one my favorite characters when I first saw the show and then when he left I was worried that they were gonna pair Willow up with Riley 😛 haha

Angel leaving was sad but I knew I'd see him on his own show so it wasn't that bad. The same with Cordy.

So definitely, Oz. It just tears me up whenever I watch him go... ah, such a wonderful character.

Oh my god, you made me remember something from my past! When season 4 started, and they showed that Willow and Riley talk better with each other than him and Buffy (when they first met at the library), I was sure THEY would be together! Riley didn't even seem to like Buffy at first.

Angel for obvious reasons...it was the goodbye I felt the most. The scene when they look at each other conveys everything and it just breaks my heart. And Oz...I loved his character and I loved him with Willow so when he left in Wild At Heart with Willow crying was really upsetting..the second time around I just felt so sad but not completely heartbroken..either way, it was difficult to bear.

Back then, it was Angel leaving BtVS at the end of Season 3. Now, when I rewatch, I always get so upset over Oz leaving in Season 4.

When Angel left at the end of season 3 and then when Spike left in the finale. It's been the most painful characters to leave the show.

Angel. I identify with Buffy the most, and I find it really horrible to see her suffer like that.
After that, probably Oz. I don't like Riley or Tara, so I don't mind their leaving that much.

I was so disappointed and angry with him for leaving Buffy when she needed him most. And even more sorry for Buffy who just fell apart once he left.

Good question and one that for me is very difficult to answer. I can't remember how i felt when i first watched the show as it was a long time ago but during my numerous rewatches this year i found many departures emotional to watch.

I wasn't that much of a Willow and Oz fan but the way he left was emotional. The emotional scene in Oz's room which was played out brillantly between Alyson and Seth combined with the fantastic music which accompanied it, made the scene very touching and sad, quite painful.

Buffy not getting there in time to stop Riley was extremely painful for me. It isn't the fact that Riley left which makes it painful for me. It is the look on Buffy's face which gets me, when Xander says "run" she seems to realize what she is losing and the fact she doesn't make it when she cries out Riley is sad. That's probably because i love SMG though and emotional scenes with her involved always get to me.

If you can count a death as someone leaving then for me Kendra's death is the most painful. The music combined with Buffy not getting their in time and the fact that it is a death makes it probably the most painful moment in the show for me.

Cordy. She was actually the reason I started to watch Angel, because she was my favourite character on Buffy.
I was double crushed when she left Angel as well. And for over a year I didn't watch the rest of s5 past You're Welcome, just because she wasn't in it.

Lilah I also didn't like to see go away. That was like the double killer of the end of s4, Cordy gone AND Lilah. Seriously, I really think this wasn't a smart move of JW. Especially with Lilah in the Wolfram & Hart season a lot could've been done!

Oz. I vaguely remembering not watching the episodes that followed his leaving for a while.

Although I am not a Buffy/Riley fan, when she was too late to stop Riley. I didn't care that he left, but Sarah is such an emotional actress, that I was in tears.

I'm going to address leaving and not deaths, because that's what the OP asked about. I'd say Angel & Oz. Angel's leaving was really emotional, & started in The Prom. Those last few episodes were sad, because you know that he was leaving. Oz's leaving was more surprising for me, and both Seth & Alyson's performances were amazing. His coming back & leaving again in Wild at Heart is emotional as well.

The only leaving that I felt particularly difficult to handle was Tara's death 🙁

Other than that I have to say when Giles left Buffy in Season 6 I was pretty devastated for the poor little Buffster. She really was so upset and it was beautifully done!

Like Tueuse de Vampires, the whole reason I started watching Angel was because of her. And when she left Buffy, I didn't like it at first and it still took some getting used to. But when she left Angel, I was very disappointed and I'm still not used to it. Season 5 is my least favorite mainly because of her, and she didn't need to die at the end of You're Welcome either.
