Why all the Kennedy Haters?

The only time I ever thought that Tara and Willow were interesting together . . . was when they fought over Willow's use of magic. That's it. Frankly, they were too similar in personality to make an interesting couple. But I understand that many people believe that couples who are similar in character are more perfect for each other. However, that is a belief I don't share. It's just me.

Okay, I don't have much to contribute because I wasn't significantly attached to any of the characters, but just to let ya'll know; this isn't about Willow and Tara. Really, it isn't even about Willow and Kennedy. This is about why people don't like Kennedy.

(Don't want to sound like I'm being bossy or anything- just trying to remind people. There are probably other threads where people discuss how wonderful W/T were. And I did think their relationship was sweet- just not particularly interesting.)

The only time I really had a mini hate fest for her (as I did for the rest of the gang) was when they kicked Buffy out. That was ridiculous, especially after all Buffy had done for *all* of them. But that hate wasn't soley focused on Kennedy, and I "forgave" them.

but thats why some people hate kennedy so the topics are naturally going to blend into one :rolleyes2

True... but discussing the merits of W/K against W/T CAN get repetitive after a while, ya know what I mean?

Keeping on the Kennedy topic.... What did she ever REALLY do for Willow? Tara helped Willow develop her magicks... And without her she never would have acheived the Goddessness in the final episode. Tara changed everything about Willows world, and yes, I think at first they were alot alike... Which explains their attraction... They were soulmates and there is no denying that. I feel bad for Kennedy, but the first chance she gets when Willow needs her, she gets all scared.

A potential slayer with probable death coming her way would of course be frightened. I'm suprised she was as brave as she was during most of the time. I admit, Tara did ALOT for Willow, and Kennedy in the last of the show didn't do much for Willow (besides helping her get over a death, which in my mind, actually is ALOT).

It would be unfair to compare Tara to Kennedy, seeing as Kennedy never really would be able to compare to most. They didn't have the time, nor take the effort, to properly develop her character. I think she would have more depth if they had, and her and Willow could have created a deeper connection then.

Yea thats fair enough to say... I agree that they didn't have enough time to develop a total relationship... With all that said... Even with a fair chance, I don't think she could have ever compared to Tara. Just my opinion...

How about helping Willow get over her fear of losing control and giving herself to the magicks? I don't think without Kennedy's trust and love Willow would have been able to cast that spell.

Now, don't get me wrong. I loved Willow and Tara together, but I think Willow and Kennedy might have been good also, if he had been given time to see the relationship develop like we did with W/T.

I think that's a good point. If she'd had more depth to her then I may have found myself making an exception to the brat problem. Darla was occasionally a brat but at least she had depth.

We never really saw much about Kennedy... She was just there, and suddenly kissing Willow. I am typically obsessive in that I need to understand a person before I'll accept them in Buffy and Angel but Kennedy was just the top layer of her personality.

Or maybe she really is just that annoying all the way down.

So, if Kennedy had been the perfect Potential, who had never questioned Buffy's authority (I guess it was okay for Buffy to question the WC's authority, but not for Kennedy to question Buffy's) and had not possessed an aggressive personality, you would have all loved her?

The Scoobies have projected behavior that made Kennedy look like a sweetheart. And yet, hardly anyone has bothered to bash them. I suspect that a lot of anti-Kennedy behavior is due to the fact that everyone wanted her to be another Tara. They demand that recurring characters like Kennedy and Wood be perfect, yet are very tolerant of the less-than-admirable behavior of the regular cast. I detect a lot of hypocricy in this attitude.

I've actually been observing Kennedy specifically when I watch Season 7 these days (and one of these days I will do that profile, like I said I was going to do) and I respect her a lot. I mean, I probably wouldn't want to hang out with her (although maybe, if she likes Robert Parker mysteries 😉 ) but she's not just being belligerant. She really does believe that the things Buffy is doing are wrong and stupid, and she's not going to just sit by and watch her new friends (and maybe herself) die because Buffy says so. And that's....a lot like Buffy, really. She's not just trying to cause trouble, she really is trying to look out for herself, her new girlfriend (whom she obviously believes in) and the other, younger Potentials. Ok, yes she's abrasive and outspoken and not particularly likeable at first glance (and I still miss Tara!) but she's not a stuck-up rich girl trouble maker either. She's trying to help, and she's a very competant fighter. Of course, I used to hate her, and it's only after careful study of her character in canon that I got to respect her. (thanks for that LadyL, btw, it's all your fault! 😉 I never would have done it if we hadn't argued about it in the "Potentials Character Profiles thread! 😀)

Yeah. Get on that Kennedy profile, Little Fishy. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Kennedy was never my favorite Potential (actually, the quirky Amanda was), but I never hated her. I simply saw her for the flawed human being that she was. And to me, she was no more flawed than the rest of the characters.

I never was a fan of the whole Potentials thing in the first place, but Kennedy embodies everything I hate about it. She had absolutely no comprehension of what she was involved in, no experience, no "credentials" other than genetics, yet she tried to basically take over. She strikes me as the type of person who always has to be right, always has to be in charge, and probably got everything her way for most of her life. Even when any sane person would have chosen Buffy over Kennedy for leadership, Kennedy was fighting a seven-year Slayer for power. It was pathetic. If it wasn't for Buffy, Kennedy would be dead. If it wasn't for Buffy and Willow, I do not believe Kennedy would have ever been chosen as a Slayer. Even if she had been, I believe she would have been killed off very fast. She's just not cut out for it the way Buffy is.

As for Kennedy and Willow's relationship, I believe it existed solely as a rebound. You see the type of people Willow liked before - Xander, Oz, Willow. Then you see Kennedy. I strongly believe that Willow would have never gone for Kennedy if it wasn't for Tara's death. There is just absolutely nothing there. Kennedy might have helped her move on in a way, but that's it. I don't believe Kennedy had or has anything else to offer Willow. Kennedy is overbearing, Tara was supportive and steadfast. Tara helped Willow become strong and confident. If Willow had started going out with Kennedy in season four instead, I believe Willow would have been more timid than ever. Tara helped Willow to speak up for herself - Kennedy would have done all the speaking for her. Kennedy helped Willow break out of her shell again after Tara died, but Oz and Tara helped Willow become the person she actually is today.

And in closing, may I just say... god I hate Kennedy.

I don't think that's fair to Kennedy. She's not any more flawed (As Lovely LadyL said) than any of the other Potentials. And if you didn't like the Potentials in the first place, I can understand why you might dislike her. But I don't think that Kennedy was trying to "take over" anything. She didn't want to lead, she just wanted to make sure their leaders weren't going to get them killed.

I agree that Kennedy would have NEVER been right for Willow in Season 4. But maybe now that Willow is more confident, she can hold her own with Kennedy. I still don't like their relationship very much, just because it feels forced and it feels like they were rushing to get the girls in bed together instead of developing the relationship. But Willow didn't really need someone to be supportive and steadfast anymore.

Now, like LadyL, Kennedy's not my favorite Potential (that's Rona) but I don't think it's fair to demonize her because she's outspoken and challenges authority. After all, isn't that what Buffy does at every turn, and that's why we loved her. And I've only come to that conclusion after really trying to figure out why she does what she does, and if you don't do that, you might just hate her.

You've just described Buffy Anne Summers to a T. It's the very same argument that Anya had used to criticize Buffy in "Empty Spaces".

i couldnt stand kennedy even before her relationship with willow. she was so annoying! I didnt think she was right for willow.

I didn't really have a problem with Kennedy she was very strong minded and all but she could get on my nerves at times too. but I also didn't think she was right for Willow.

I hated Kennedy with a passion! She never really liked Buffy being the slayer. She pretty much wanted to be a slayer herself. Willow and Kennedy were just plain wrong together. Kennedy was the complete opposite of sweet and kindhearted Tara. Kennedy just plain annoyed me!

Well, as it seems, general hatred is welded from the fact that Kennedy is anti-Tara and the fact that the “moving-over” was short and abrupt. Valid points both. But I am in another category and that's why I am posting. Ok. Hard to give it a start. Firstly I didn't like Tara at all. She always seemed as a rebound to me. Willow made a connection with her because she lost someone and wanted and needed a harbor and Tara was her harbor. With Tara she felt safe primarily because of the fact that she was in the control. She wanted someone solely hers and Tara “was hers” (it is even quoted in the beginnings of the relation). Tara and Willow’s relation with her was Willow’s defeat in accepting the fact that you are sometimes left by the ones you trust most. She couldn’t accept it and found a harbor (which/who was too probably was broken in her life and therefore needed a harbor). That’s why she was gone crazy after Tara’s death. Now she has lost everything hers and there was no way to turn it back; with Oz, at least she had that chance… Tara was a harbor and Kennedy was anti-Tara but that doesn’t mean that she wasn’t a harbor because she was. I know most people think that Kennedy was in control in that relation but I think not. It was Willow who approved it and that way it could have started. Kennedy was a harbor and therefore a rebound and that’s why I don’t like them together; I want Willow to be with someone who is her equal and not a harbor. And the fact that I don’t like them together results in me not liking even hating Kennedy.

In additon to that;

Believe what you want but Tara was as right for Willow as Xander was.

Thank you for the Xander part.

well my anti kennady is because of tara! no one can replace her and so soon too. willow and taras realationship was the best in buffy and throwing in a forward potential slayer like kennady in the mix so soon after taras death and willow nearly destroying the world?????? then the next minute andrews filming xanders good craftmanship on the windows and there casualy snogging on the sofa??????? and shes like jenny calander? she gives of her caractures vibe....is that just me?????
